. >> joining me this morning from chicago is the obama campaign's national press secretary ben labolts nice to see you this morning. >> thanks for having me back. >> absolutely. let's get through this because mitt romney has been talking about the president doing this really hard during the next 48 hours. is the president confident, ben, to run on his own economic record for re-election? >> there are a lot of specifics about what his plans are, or his record in massachusetts because he can't run on those. massachusetts lagged behind during his denture. it started off as 35th and when he left office it was 47th. he says there will be less debt. well, debt went up to over 16%. over 16% by the time that mitt romney left office, and he raised taxes on middle class families an average of $750 million a year. he is trying to sell us somebody that he isn't. >> ben, real quickly, though, is the akillies heel for president obama and re-election not having the unemployment rate at 8%? having it below that? >> well, i got to tell you, when the president came into office, we were losing 750,000 j

. >> i want to bring in ben labolt. good morning, ben. >> thanks for having me on. >> the president's super pac raised just $2 million in february. less than santorum, less than newt gingrich. obviously less than mitt romney. are you worried? is that where you're vulnerable? >> what we're focused on is what we can control, which is donations to our campaign and expanding our donor base. we've had over 1.6 million donors to our campaign. the average contribution to the campaign is $59 or less. we can go back to them over and over again throughout the campaign -- >> it's a fair argument in that you want people to believe that you are the candidate that a lot of people support. when you look at the difference between rick santorum's campaign and mitt romney's campaign and who's giving the money it's stark. you definitely have an argument there. but you have to keep up with the money, don't you, both on your side and on the super pac's side? >> there are oil donors out there who are pouring millions and millions of dollars a

so i am very pleased to be joined now by ben labolt, the national press secretary to the president forampaign. ben, good to have you here. >> nice to be with you, thank you. martha: on the cover of usa today, obviously, there's an lot talked about in terms of how much time the president has spent, i think one ut of -- out of every three days he's on the road doing a fund-raiser. why is that? >> there's no doubt that the president is focused on what americans elected him to do,or e have to recognize we're in a different landscape, where special interests can give contributions to the other side, oil companies giving $200 million in an attempt to elect a republican to the white house. so we have to fight back against that and that involves a series of fundraising events but it also involves contributions from average americans across the country, the average contribution to our campaign is $55. martha: i guess the question it raises is how is it going. there was talk about a billion dollars campaign, and you know, according to some of the numbers, your burn rate is very high, about $75 m
