. >> laura in new orleans i spoke with ben martinez. he signed up at 17 years old and he served in italy. we talked about how d-day led to the end of the war and what that meant to, him. >> i wanted to get in right away at pearl harbor but i was advised not to. i had five months to go to get a degree in pharmacy and everybody said get your degree first and then sign up. so i enlisted in may of '42. >> he served as a medic. they traversed the italian alps. he still remember the day he received word that the war was over. >> i remember very distinctly. we were at a a little town and we were loading up the mule and we were already in the alps and we were going higher and word came down that the war was over. it was just a complete silence. nobody talked to anybody. they all had their own thing going on in their mind. when i came too more or less the first thing i did was i went to see the man who had been loading up the mules and i think i started crying. you guys don't have to do what you did before. it's's over. >> then martinez came hom
