joining me are david sanger and ben rhodes. >> the north koreans are just stepping up their testing program an they're stepping it up in the most interesting way. so their biggest concern is not doing something that would prompt president trump to take some kind of preem tiff military action or something that would so horrify the international community that it would actually unify everybody on the saks. and that would be dropping the icbm just off the west coast or something. so instead they're doing a series of tests that are going high up into space. this one went 2,000 kilometers, 1400 miles. and then it's doing a very short parabel and coming down it landed 400 or so miles from the north korean coast. so that replicates the reentry of an icbm. so they're putting together the component pieces of what it would take to demonstrate that they could send a missile much further, without actually prompting that kind of military response. >> we continue this evening with dr. rock positano who was a friend of joe dimaggio. his new book is called dinner with dimaggio, memories of an american hero

earlier this year i came to the floor and talked about officer ben rhodes of chillicothe, ohio. last year officer rhodes reversed more than 50 drug overdoses. this is one officer in one small town. talk to the fire officers in your community and ask them whether they go on more fire runs or more fentanyl/carfentanil overdose runs. i will guarantee you they go on year overdose runs. as a result, in some communities, those firefighters are not there to protect us as you would typically think from the fires that still continue to be a major problem. so this is a real issue, taking up more and more of their time, more and more resources and causing more and more crime. on the one hand thursday in middletown, ohio, a family was getting ready to leave the house. in fact they'd already strapped their 3-month-old baby into a car seat. and not clear whether they had shot up with heroin before they put the baby in the car seat or after, but they went back in the house and overdosed in the house. they got the baby in the car seat. they've overdosed in the home. they have another son who is

. >> ben rhodes, who was president obama's foreign policy adviser and speech writer wrote "this is nothis is not healthy for a democracy." james comey was in the midst of a ten-year term, can donald trump in that circumstance confirm anyone without a protracted set of hearings? >> there is absolutely going to be a protracted set of hearings. there's no way around it at this point. the most damning evidence against donald trump right now is coming from donald trump. so that is not lost on people. so the senate, you know, the house as was moniesed, the house is a pack of wild dogs. the senate is a very different animal. they certainly have their wild ones, too, but it's a very different animal. and so the senate is going to have to behave differently. so i think donald trump's problem is that he still is becoming day by day a less and less popular president. if you're a senator, he doesn't have the political capital to really compel that much. >> and david, it isn't the sense that it's just a scandal, there's something about it's warping what american democracy is kind of supposed to be.

unlike in a previous administration which carried the water for the administration's water week have ben rhodesepeated everything they wanted. neil: good point. >> the media turning over every single rock, reporting things before they have credible and meaty evidence and that's the situation here and, you know, reporters are sometimes, they can be lazy and report what everybody else reported doing the homework themselves. i think we're going to see that reflected in the international media. i will say this, the president has a powerful message he's been repeating since the campaign trail which is american strength is back and he's going to carry that message, i think, he needs do that in saudi arabia, going to give the speech to the arab world, very different than president obama's apology tour he gave in cairo. he's going to give inspirational but tough talk according to national security adviser mcmaster, that is going to be powerful to get the administration back on message and ignore the media, ignore the noise. neil: foreign trips can do that. thank you very much. the dow down 262 points.
