we have our reporter on the ground, from kxas, ben russell, watching this for us. ben, what's the latest? >> reporter: richard, i can tell you the latest is the update. i heard you speaking about a short time ago from the waco police department. that's the largest city to the south of here. the latest update as far as what they're doing. what they're doing is still going, we're told, door-to-door, in the area impacted by this, what is perhaps a five-block area around this fertilizer plant, trying to make sure they haven't missed anyone. anyone who may have survived the situation, perhaps someone who may not have survived the situation. they want to know exactly who may be out there. this is the area. we're across the highway. about a mile or so from where the situation happened. what happened recently. you see the stacks of water and toiletries. there's people from the community showing up at this early hour or late hour for those who have not gone to bed. they're bringing the supplies for first responders, for all of these untold numbers of people who likely do not

i'm joined now by kxas reporter ben russell, who is on the scene live in west texas. can you tell us about what you've seen tonight and what's happening there? >> reporter: i can tell you a lot has changed since we first arrived here. perhaps around 9:00 central time. we are now about the better part of a mile away from where this incident happened. we are at the command center. this city you see here, the city of waco police department, this is where all the major decisions are being made. that's why we're in this area. the situation going on still at this time is again perhaps bay mile away from me. i don't know if you can make it out. there are some large bright lights you see there. that's the west high school football field. that's the area where they were triaging patients in this area. the area where this fertilizer plant was is just north of that. what we have seen when we were in that area before we were moved here, we saw buildings on fire. they appeared to be barns, not homes, though we understand homes have been impacted in this five-block estimated area th

ben russell is standing by. >> i have a gentleman here who works at this west -- >> again, we are covering breaking news out of the town of west texas, a fertilizer plant explosion. we are looking at video from earlier that shows some of the fire and damage. no report at this time on casualties. the number of injured or dead, but the preliminary reports are that this is a devastating explosion. reports of up to 100, possibly injured and up to two dead. that is not yet confirmed. reports of extensive property damage, homes up to hundreds of homes within a five-mile radius are destroyed or damaged and that rescuers are going door to door looking for people who are in those homes to make sure they are okay and to try to locate them. the mayor of the town, we can see the power of this explosion as it took place. this happened right before 8:00 p.m. local time. you are looking at video of a fertilizer plant explosion in the town of west, texas. the mayor, whose own home was severely destroyed said people may not be here tomorrow. that is an early indication of how bad the casualty count could b
