ben thompson is at the site of the new birmingham curzon street train station. of the new station for hs2. this will be curzon street station. where we are now is where the platforms will be. but the platforms, you may be able to work out, will run all the way down there to where the trees are, just adjacent to the west coast main line that currently brings passengers from the capital to birmingham. it is a huge job, with already concern about how much it's going to cost and how long it will take to deliver. well, with me is the boss of the hs2 project. mark thurston, good morning. look, just talk me through it, a hugejob on your hands, haven't you ? lots of work to do to deliver those final chains in 2033. you need to deliver this on budget. how? i think that's the challenge, ben. this is a project on a scale we've not seen and, already we got 9,000 people working on hs2. we expect that to double in the next two to three years. and probably at peak, this is going to take about 30,000 people. so in answer to your question, this becomes a national endeavour betwe

our business presenter ben thompson has been to hs2's birmingham construction site to find out more.ingham on the site of what will be the curzon street station. it will be the birmingham end of that first phase of the hs2 line that brings passengers from london to here in birmingham and then, ultimately, onwards towards manchester and leeds. but already, of course, lots of concern about this project, whether it will be delivered on time and budget. already a massive cost associated with delivering this line, and the man whose job it is is mark thurston, the chief executive of hs2. good morning. you have a big job on your hands. how do you make sure you get this delivered on—time and on budget because we all know that in this country, we are not very good at doing that, are we? well, i think that is the challenge for us. we are in uncharted territory here. we have done some big projects in the uk in the last 20 or 30 years but this thing is a national endeavour and we have not built a railway north of london for over a hundred years. it will require political commitment, it will requ

talking of height, the tallest man on the team, ben thompson, is talking all about tim —— hs2.e site of what will be a station for h52 in birmingham. it will be the end of the start, depending on where you are travelling, of the line between london and birmingham, the first phase of high—speed two, and the preparatory work is under way. this is how father station will go, so all the way from there to hear, and where we are standing right now will be platforms. of course, you may know it is about improving speed capacity. it will cut journey times between london and birmingham, the subsequent phases will take you to crewe and manchester and leeds. the idea is to cut those journey times and triple the number of seats on journeys between the capital and other major cities. they are already beset by cost concerns, how much it will all cost at the end of the day. will it be finished on time? we're talking 2033 until the trains are running on that last phase, so lots of concern about all of that. i will put some of those questions and worries to the chief executive of the whole proje
