ben wedeman is in northern italy where he caught up with the man who's became famous around the worldr: after four hours of work, 234 is done. five days a week, he does odd jobs at a home for the elderly in vicenza in northern italy. by the way, did you notice something? yes, 53-year-old vin nishiol suffers from a hereditary condition called neurofibromatosis type one. his body's almost covered from head to toe with growths, swellings and sores. his mother had the same condition as does his sister. he's had it since the age of 15. his appearance often terrifies strangers. vin nishiol recalls trying to take a seat on a bus but being told by the passenger next to him to sit somewhere else. >> translator: i wanted to answer back, but i controlled myself, he says. i felt my blood pressurize. i wanted to leave the bus but i had a doctor's appointment. there were lots of people on the bus, but no one said a word. our ben wedeman is live in rome this morning. ls, ben. >> reporter: probably at the top of the agenda is the middle in these discussions later today between pope francis and vladimir putin. both of them have expressed strong concerns about the plight of christians in the middle east, christians who have been caught in the cross-fire in places like egypt and places like syria where many have been killed, in fact, and many more decided to leave the area because of the violence and danger the situation poses. that will probably be at the top of the agenda. however, many other things they are going to be talking about. among other things is some sort of -- between the catholic church and the orthodox church which split back in 1054 in what is called the great schism. there are disputes over, for instance, property that was confiscated by joseph stalin back in the soviet area. lots to talk about. it's questionable whether anything concrete will come out of it, but certainly some importance in terms of symbolism. >> a historic meeting t

joining me from rome, ben wedeman.t's so unique and special to see the pictures of these two men who seem so far apart, perhaps idealogically in some ways, but tell me more about the visit. >> well, brooke, if there was a fly on the wall in that meeting, that fly is not talking. we do know that they met for 35 minutes. one-on-one with their translators. of course, we do know that, for instance, that vladimir putin did give as a gift to pope francis an icon of the virgin mary with the baby jesus, and what we saw in tape that was distributed by the vatican, both of the men ben over and kissed that icon. in a sense, symbolizing that even though the christian democrat split in 1054 in what is known as the great schism when the west went to the vatican and the east went to the greek orthodox church, they are fundamentally united in their basic beliefs. we do know they were speaking. they did speak to some extent about the situation in syria. about the plight of christians, not only in syria, but throughout the middle east.

ben wedeman covering the story from rome and phil black is in moscow. >> ben, let's start with you.us likely to be syria. what have they got to talk about? >> reporter: well, it's interesting, michael, that you know, russia back in the waning is days of the ottoman empire saw itself as a protector for christians of the ottoman empire. of course, pope francis has been quite vocal since he became pope backing in march about the flight of christians in syria and elsewhere in the middle east and northern africa. so it's very -- that is very much his concern at the moment. and, of course, president putin and the russians have been supporters of the regime in damascus. back in september, pope francis did send a direct messagetom president putin expressing concern over the plight of the christians just before the g-20 meeting in st. petersburg. so they've been having something of a dialogue ever since. and we can expect that dialogue to continue. michael? halah? >> thanks, ben is in rome. as far as phil black in moscow, the pope and the president, very different men. sometimes it's even ha
