let's get right to cnn senior international correspondent ben wedeman live in jerusalem. ben, what more can you tell us about today's attacks? >> reporter: today's attacks as you mentioned one was outside the damascus gate. according to the israeli police it was a 19-year-old resident of hebron in the southern west bank. in that incident this man apparently when he was approached by israeli police he was acting strangely they said when they came closer he pulled a knife, and they shot him, but not fatally. he ran towards the damascus gate itself where another unit of israeli border police shot him multiple times killing him on the spot. regarding the incident outside the jerusalem bus station, normally a very busy place, apparently a 72-year-old woman was attacked by a man in his late 20s from neighborhood in east jerusalem. in that case a bus driver brought the woman inside the bus, closed the door, stopped the attacker from doing any more harm to her. he started to run up the street. the bus station is really just a block away from here. and in that instance we're told t

senior international correspondent ben wedeman is live for us in jerusalem. ben, there was a peace rally also saturday following the violence. so what is the day bringing so far on this sunday? >> reporter: so far, there are no incidents reported. but the cloesh shush of palestinian neighborhoods continues. if i step out of the way, you can get a look. we're in a palestinian suburb to the east of jerusalem. it has been under this closure. actually, it's been under closure for quite some time but it's been tightened. there are now these cement blocks across the road, vehicles aren't allowed to pass. so what people do is they get a bus from inside the town and they come up and when they arrive here at the checkpoint, the men, for instance have to lift their shirts and lift the bottom of their pants to show that they're not concealing any weapons. when you speak to people coming out of through this checkpoint, there's a lot of anger. one man telling me that this simply isn't going to solve the problem. it's only going to get worse. this is one of the many measure

ben wedeman is standing by live in jerusalem with the lacest. ben, what more do you know?: well, just refer to the attack in the bus station, which is really just up the street from here. we understand from the israeli medical service that the woman wounded was 72 years old. she was stabbed in the upper body on a sidewalk just outside the very busy central jerusalem bus station. when that happened, a bus driver helped her onto the bus to provide her some assistance. he closed the door in order to prevent the attacker who apparently is a man in his late 20s from the east jerusalem superb. now, when the attacker -- when this happened, the attacker went in a different direction, started running up the street. bystanders obviously seeing this happen started to shout and police quickly arrived on the scene. and, as you said, according to a statement by the israeli police, they neutralized him, we understand that he has been killed. and that of course just happened about 2 1/2 hours after this incident at damascus gate, one of the main entrances to the old city of jerusalem wher

cnn senior international correspondent ben wedeman joins us from jerusalem. ben, i was there in the old city about a month ago, and i could not have felt safer. things have changed so much. why the escalation in violence? >> reporter: well, this goes back to the situation on the temple mount as it's known to muslims. that's because for decades, there was what was called the status quo where there was an understanding that muslims would worship on the temple mount, and the jews would not be worshipping in it. increasingly, there are jewish groups that want to have the right to worship within the compound of the temple mount, and there's been a lot of palestinian muslim resist anticipate to it, which has resulted in mounting tensions. there are mr. palestinians who believe that israel basically wants to divide the temple mount between muslims and jews, and they're very opposed to that. but if you go beyond that, because really that's just one tree in the forest of the palestinian/israeli conflict going back decades. and the fact of the matter is that time and ti

senior international correspondent ben wedeman is covering this for us from beirut. n, earlier this week, we saw president obama meet face to face with president putin. clearly whether it comes to syria, there's no common ground between the two. >> reporter: well, there's common ground in the -- rhetorically at least in the sense that both of them say they are targeting isis. on the ground, it's a completely different situation. what we've seen is a pattern of air strikes on areas and groups that are clearly not isis. in fact, this morning, the british defense minister said that only one in five targets hit by the russians is isis. the focus of the air strikes until now is very much in the area along the damascus/aleppo highway. a strategic road that of course links the syrian capital with the western coast. the cities of latakia where, of course, some of the russian forces are concentrated. and that's, of course, where there's a large proportion of the alawite community to which assad is a member. clearly what we're seeing is a russian effort to bolster the syrian re

cnn senior international correspondent ben wedeman live for us now from jerusalem. ben, what's the very latest? >> reporter: well, the latest is that the situation now has been pretty much cleared up. the israeli authorities are also quite -- often quite good at doing that. but this was the first attack of the day. so when we went well into the afternoon with no events happening, people started breathing a sigh of relief after yesterday, there were five attacks in jerusalem and elsewhere in israel, leaving at least three people dead, many more wounded. now, we did arrive to see, as the medical personnel wrapped the body in a back plastic body bag and carried it up the stairs. i'm going to step out of the way so you can see the scene better. you see those men down there are using water and a broom. they are removing the last traces of the blood of the attacker who, of course, is dead. he took at least a dozen bullets by the many israeli police and border police who are stationed here. now, there was a rather odd somewhat disturbing scene a little while ago. as we watc

ben wedeman is on the west bank where the situation is tense. hi, ben. >> reporter: hi, carol. about five hours. i'm going to step out of the way so you can just get a look at what's going on. what you see in front of you is this truck belonging to the israeli border police. on top it's mounted with something that launched 36 canisters of tear gas. if you hang on long enough, you may see it as it goes forward and fires it down the street where there are several hundred political protesters, shooting rocks, sling shots with marbles, throws improvised explosive devices and molotov cocktails at the police. we saw several protesters hit by live fire. this has really been going on day after day after day for the last two weeks in this location. but it's not the only location where clashes are ongoing. in gaza we understand one 4-year-old palestinian was killed by live fire there at a protest near one of the fences that separates israel from the gaza strip. on previous occasions, there have been attempts to actually get over that fence and inside israel. now you see this jeep going f

cnn international correspondent ben wedeman live on the west bank this morning. st south of bethlehem where two hours ago there was an attack, a car with israeli plates swerved off the road and went into a crowd of people. one soldier, one civilian were wounded lightly, according to their description. i'm going to step out of the way to show you the scene itself. according to the police, there were security force on the scene as there always are at this particular junction, and they shot the attacker dead. the scene has been completely cleaned up. these concrete pillars used to block cars, some were knocked over. they've been put back. they've put concrete, the barriers here and also in that ambulance is the body of the attacker. it's as you said, the third attack of the day in this area of the west bank. that israeli driver who stepped out of his car was run over by a truck driven by a palestinian. in that instance, the truck driver seems to have gotten away. >> ben wedeman reporting live for us. thank you. >>> still to come in the "newsroom," heritage or hate? a

. >> let's go straight to our senior international correspondent ben wedeman live in jerusalem. have seen these pictures. we're seeing more images of the violence. tell me more about the so-called day of rage, ben. >> reporter: well, this was the third day of rage, brooke, that palestinian parties called for within the last eight days. and what we saw was really a repeat of what we have been seeing now for quite some time. clashes in places like bethle m bethlehem, gaza, actually four people were killed. one person died from wounds from the previous day of rage and one of the palestinians was the man who was dressed up as a journalist and shot by israeli police. but this is just becoming more and more the pattern of events here in the west bank and gaza are these clashes. and listening to president obama talking about tamenning down the violence, israelis and palestinians say we expect the violence to tamp down. the problem is that it will flare up again and again. what we're seeing is that these flare ups are becoming the distance between them is becoming shorter and shorter. a

ben wedeman has more on the root cause of the conflict in the region. >> reporter: pull up your pantsrn around, show your i.d. that's the only way residents of the east jerusalem/palestinian neighborhood can get to the sister of the city, under tough new security measures imposed by the israeli government in the wake of a spate of stabbing attacks. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has repeatedly accused the palestinian authority, hamas and others, inciting the violence. ask the palestinians at the checkpoint what's behind it all and they seem to say the same thing, the israeli occupation. the occupation sleeps on our chests, on our stomachs, says this 63-year-old. says this woman, occupation is oppression. oppression and s. more than half million have settled in the west bank, mostly on confiscated palestinian land. israel set up an extensive netted work and concrete blocks have gone up in east jerusalem. >> occupation means you have approximately 2.5 million palestinians living for almost 50 years under military administration. >> reporter: the palestinian authority set up a

ben wedeman is there. en, how concerned are israeli officials right now that all of this could lead to even more violence because it's been very dramatic these past few days? >> yes, indeed, wolf. this is really just one incident that is added to a mounting pile of similar incidents that's really fueling tensions. not only attacks by palestinians on israelis but today for instance in demona, you had an incident where an israeli-jewish teenager stabbed four arabs, two israeli bedwen and two israeli civilians. so you have this pattern of incidents in which people are hurt on both sides which really only fuels the rising tensions. and this really goes back quite some time. you'll remember for instance in the beginning of august there was a palestinian family of three including an 18-month-old baby who were burned to death. just last week you had two israelis killed stabbed to death in the old city. so incidents like this perpetrated by extremists on both sides is really just creating an atmosphere of tension i

ben wedeman joins us with more. se situation for weeks now, what's the latest, ben, tonight? >> reporter: well, the latest anderson is for more than 24 hours there has been no attack and these days you take every day at a time. that's not only the case in the troubles are over but perhaps that there's a lull. the leaders on both sides really continue to play this blame game for what's going on but the fact of the matter is that this phenomenon of lone wolf attacks has both sides stumped worried that elements are at play that no one has any control of. people who decide to go and launch these attacks not under the orders of hamas or so it seems to be something that has the security services stumped, as well as the political leaders. >> and israeli officials are encouraging citizens with gun licenses to carry guns with them. how difficult is it to get a gun license in israel? >> it's more difficult than in the united states. you have to apply for a license and you have to prove that you have a need to have a weapon. it

cnn's ben wedeman is live for us in bethlehem. on the streets where it is now dark. the sun has set in bethlehem. what's the very latest? >> reporter: the latest is that these clashes are ongoing. they're up the street from here. but we've been moved back by the israeli border police because they are about to explode two unexploded improvised explosive devices. these are homemade hand grenades out on the street so we've been moved back. these clashes have gone on since after noon day prayers. it's now about 6:30 p.m. here. this was part of this day of rage that was declared by the palestinian factions. it's the third day of rage, in fact, in the last eight days. what we've seen throughout the day is just this constant back and forth. the palestinian youth are throwing rocks, homemade hand grenades and molotov cocktails, pieces of wood. the israelis are firing back with hundreds and hundreds of canisters of tear gas, shooting rubber bullets, and it appears some live ammunition as well. four palestinians were wounded by that live am

. >> daniel, our ben wedeman filed a report earlier. his report shows the two sides really are entrenched and there's not a lot of conversation when it comes to peace between them. the question to you, do you see any rhetoric from the israelis or palestinians to suggest that violence could be quelled in the coming days? >> i think, george, yourself and ben raise very important points because the real issue here as one steps back from the immediate pictures that we're viewing out of gaza with the killing of the pregnant woman and her 4-year-old daughter out of jerusalem, out of the west bank, et cetera. the real question is what is done with these prolonged extended periods of relative quiet or relative security at least for israel is and what happened is that those periods of time have not been used in order to advance peace, in order to limit or end the occupation in order to head towards a two-state political collusion. those period of time have tended to be characterized by more settlement building, more en tran muchment of the -- i
