ben wedeman. we understand there have been violent protests near the u.s. embas embassy. >> reporter: that's right. they gathered in a round about, a mile away from the u.s. embassy. they, during that protest, there were moments when rocks, stones and water bottles were thrown in the direction of the gate, which was closed, leading up to the u.s. embassy, and lebanese security forces responded with tear gas and bird shot. but buy and large, in fact, the protest was peaceful. there were attempts by the organizers to maintain a peaceful atmosphere. what was interesting in this rally, this demonstration is that it included palestinian refugees, islamist groups, lebanese leftist organizations and essentially united groups that in recent years have been quite divided over the war in yemen, and syria and the aftermath of the upheaval of the arab spring. so what we are seeing is groups that in the past were strongly, deeply divided, have been united in their condemnation of president trump's recognition

let's go live to beirut this morning and bring in ben wedeman. we understand there have been violent protests not too far from the u.s. embassy. >>reporter: that's right. we were there. there were more than a thousand people who gathered at at round about which is about a mile down the hill. there were times when some of the young er protests were throwing rocks, plastic water bottles and sticks in the direction of the lebanese security forces who responded with tear gas and birdshot. however, some of the organizers did try to keep it under control. by and large in fact the demonstration was peaceful. now, as i said, the american embassy is a good mile away from that location but there's a gate at the bottom of that hill which they close when you have demonstrations of like what we saw yesterday. what was interesting, christine, was that this demonstration brought together palestinian refugees, islam mist groups, lebanese leftist parties. groups that in recent years have been divided over things like the war in syria, yemen, but they do seem to h

ben wedeman is there innorthern beirut. ere any way for you, it may be difficult to quantify the protesters, how many are there and what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: okay. there were more than a thousand protesters but within last hour, lebanese security forces disbursed them and they charged outside of this gate right here that was blocking the entrance to the road that leads to the american embassy. it's important, victor, to keep in mind that the embassy is a good mile away from here. so at no point were there -- was the embassy in any danger, but the protesters did manage to rip this gate down, which they are now moving away. but there were also, in addition to the more than thousand protesters, there were well over a hundred, probably more like 200 lebanese police and other security forces there to stop them from getting anywhere near the embassy. now for the most part, despite those dramatic pictures, the protest was peaceful and, in fact, some of the organizers were trying to very hard to dissuade the young

as ben wedeman reports they aren't over yet. >> reporter: the rocks had no chance of hitting u.s. of beirut. the chants calling for the embassy to be shut down probably barely audible to the american diplomats hunkering down inside. the embassy itself is more than a mile away. but the message from more than 1,000 lebanese, palestinians and others who gathered here was clear. rejection of president donald trump's recognition of jerusalem as israel's capital. came from the palestinian refugee camp. we can't do more than this, he concedes. all we can do is raise our voices. some tried to stop the stone throwing but failed. lebanese fired volley after volley of tear gas knocking some protesters unconscious. demonstrators flown home made israeli flags. we are used to arab leaders and regimes who talk but do nothing. their con demnations and denunciations are useless. they're sheep he says, even our children know they are sheep. as the protests continue more stones were thrown and outrushed lebanese security. in the end demonstration was disbursed by lebanese security forces. >> interna
