i don't know if you saw that report we just showed from our ben wedeman or heard what ben was saying.ut we saw images there of children who were talking about how they pulled their brothers and family members out of rubble. one boy lost a father in one of the strikes, i suppose carried out by the israelis. what is your sense of it right now in terms of is there anywhere safe for the palestinian people to evacuate to to get out of harm's way, the civilians? >> yes. there are dozens of designated safe zones, but i do admit that it's a very complicated situation because hamas has two goals, to kill as many jews as possible, but also to kill as many gazans as possible in order for israel to be accused of all of this. and they do it deliberately, by putting civilians in harm's way. so, it's a very complicated operation, and we don't really have a choice. we have to eliminate hamas. when we succeed in eliminating hamas, all of this -- all of this -- carnage will stop. >> mr. prime minister, are there any second thoughts, in your mind, as to whether or not these operations are, to use an exp

let's turn to our team on the ground, ben wedeman in jerusalem, oren liebermann in tel aviv.ell us the latest on these negotiations to bring the remaining hostages home. >> reporter: the negotiations have all but collapsed at this point as benjamin netanyahu ordered the mossad to pull back its negotiations team in qatar that collapsed early yesterday morning. the challenge, according to a source familiar with the negotiations, is over what exactly the terms of the agreement are and are there numbers left to continue what we've seen, which was the release of women and children. israel and the u.s. believe hamas was still holding enough women to be able to continue the release of women and children under the current agreement. hamas, however, insists it does not, trying to push negotiations into the next phase, which was supposed to be elderly men as well as soldiers, men and women. israel looking to stick to the current agreement for the release of women and children, believing e ing hamas held enou continue. hamas insists it was israel and the u.s. to blame for the breakdown

let's go to cnn's ben wedeman in jerusalem. the idf have released a map of what what it's calling evacuation zones in gaza. what is the purpose of the idf sectioning off gaza at this point? >> reporter: basically it's divided gaza into what looked like hundreds of little blocks that are numbered. there's a iqr code on this publication so you can check and see where you are as opposed to where there's a threat. in theory this is a changing, constantly updated map people can look to the find out if they are safe or not. the problem is that many people don't have electricity, because israel cut that off. they don't have necessarily very good internet connectivity, because that has been spotty at best for a long period of time. the result is that more people are getting killed. this morning the arabic spokesman for the israeli military put out a tweet, if we can still call it that, telling the inhabitants to the east of gaza city and the northeast and north to leave immediately up to the 4:00 in the afternoon local time. what has h

ben wedeman is in jerusalem for us. and ben, the idf is saying what the plans are, and going forward and what are you hearing about the expansion? >> yes, they are going to be focusing on the southern strip of gaza, and khan younis is the largest part, and there were a lot of strikes on the villages and the towns to east and to the north of khan younis. now, it is worth noting that of course, it is the israelis who advised inhabitants of northern gaza to move to the south where they are presumably would have been safe, but that is clearly not the case. of course, many of those who fled to the south are crammed into the u.n. schools that have been converted into the shelters where the sanitary conditions are very bad, and we have heard from the spokesman from unicef who says that approximately 400 people to every single toilet, and that is if there is a functioning toilet. also overnight, we know that a part of the southern part of the gaza strip south of the dividing line of gaza over which israel told palestinians to go

we begin with cnn's ben wedeman, who is in jerusalem, ben, what is the latest you're hearing on the fighting? >> reporter: well, certainly, isabel, it seems that there have been many more than 400 strikes at this point of the day since that truce collapsed, the latest we're hearing is that a residential building was hit in the jabalia refugee camp, preliminary reports are talking about dozens of people killed, and many injured, many rushed to the nearby indonesian hospital. now, this came just a few hours after the arabic spokesman for the israeli military had warned the people of three areas to the east and the north of gaza city to leave by 4:00 p.m. today. we're talking about a lot of people basically being ordered to leave their homes and go to the south of gaza. but it appears that this residential building, a six-story building in the jabalia refugee camp was hit during that time when people were supposed to be leaving. now, we understand that many of the people in that building were displaced. they had fled to that area from other parts of gaza, which really underscores the fact that

i do want to go now to jerusalem, which is where cnn's ben wedeman is following what is happening inaza. people in gaza, they are experiencing this bombardment, and of course that means death and destruction after what was a week of relief. >> reporter: yes. in fact, a week of relief where the guns were silent. now, no longer silent at all. according to the health ministry, the current death toll is 178, hundreds more injured. the worst strike was in the city in the south, where in one house 15 people killed, in the house next door, 10 people were killed. we've seen footage from that strike where there's a 2-year-old girl on the table in the emergency ward, medics are trying to revive her and then realize that she has died. there's many more images coming out of gaza, many civilians get again being killed. israelis had dropped leaflets on the city of khan younis telling people around those areas to leetch it because it will be an active military zone. they've been told to go to rafah, which is the furthest south in the gaza strip, but that area is already crammed with people. we unde

cnn's ben wedeman is covering all of this for us in jerusalem. ben, what is the latest? what are you seeing on the ground? >> reporter: well, what we've seen is fairly intense israeli airstrikes throughout the gaza strip. yesterday it appeared that many of them were focused in the northern part of the gaza strip, which israel has said is no longer under hamas' control, but there was on social media the arabic spokesman for the israeli media told people in areas to the east and north of gaza city to leave their homes immediately, but what we saw was no those areas there were multiple strikes. one them hitting a six story building, which according to people in the area had more than 100 people who had fled from other areas. and the local hospital reported that dozens were killed in that instance, dozens were killed in another strike in the area east of gaza city. now, we don't have a clear idea how many people have been killed in gaza within the last 24 hours, but i think it's fair to say hundreds is probably safe. now, we understand that according to the israelis they wer

ben wedeman is joining us from jerusalem, and ben, a big effort to get the people out of gaza as well. how is this all coming together? what are you learning? >> well, some people, some of the injured are getting out, and those with the second citizens are slowly getting out. but really, main concern are the people stuck inside of gaza, and despite the israelis putting out a grid of where people should and shouldn't go, the fact is that there is nowhere in gaza that is safe. >> reporter: look around, this is the baptist hospital where people are treated in the open on wooden pallets, and the emergency ward is already jammed. the courtyard is full of body bags where dozens were killed in a series of strikes saturday and many more are still under the rubble. israel claims that one of the strikes killed a senior hamas commander who planned the attacks and he is one among many in attack. this woman says the attack killed her granddaughter and family members and named them all. and may god judge all of you are watching them die, she says. it is a similar scene in the hospital in central ga

let's start with cnn's ben wedeman in jerusalem. expanding it to the entire gaza strip over the weekend, where the civilians who have moeftd to the south supposed to go? >> reporter: that i think is a question that many people in gaza are asking, we know that more than 80% of the population of gaza is already displaced, many have gone to the south, now the israelis over social media have put out a map showing hundreds of individual blocs that are numbered and on theory people can go to that map there's a qr code, and nowhere is safe and where is not the problem is most people in gaza don't have electricity to charge their phones. don't have an internet connection. therefore, they're very much really left to their own devices and of course another problem is, already the shelters, the schools that have been converted into shelters in gaza are already crammed with people, as many as 40 0 to 500 people per toilet, if there's even a toilet. phil, poppy. >>> we saw on saturday, fighting in the north of israel across the border with leban

we go to ben wedeman who is in jerusalem for us.hat more are you learning or hearing about the israeli operations now? >> yeah, the israeli military is saying that they are now quote in the heart of khan younis which is the biggest city in southern gaza, and the city in which many people had fled from the north and have taken shelter, and so it is not surprising that they are saying that the action is some of the most fighting is the most intense they have seen in this war. many believe that hamas commanders, leaders and command and control centers, if you can call them that may be in khan younis. and we know that as a result of the fighting, the u.n. says they cannot get aid to the city. the residents have been seeing the leaflets dropped from the sky by the israelis telling them to stay where they are or if they are in a dangerous place to move to hospitals and other areas where they might be safer. but, this is certainly does represent a major escalation in terms of the operation south of what is known as wadi gaza, which is the

ben wedeman is joining us. the latest on the fighting. what do you know? >> what we're seeing today is a resumption of intense israeli air strikes and targets around gaza. we've seen two very large air strikes on the refugee camp and the neighborhood directly north of gaza city. we don't have precise numbers on casualties and fatalities. we're looking at perhaps as many as 300 people killed since the end of the truce early friday morning. now, the israelis said until now they have managed to locate 800 tunnels in gaza, destroy 500 of them yesterday. they said one of those strikes succeeded in killing a hamas commander who had planned the 7th of october attacks on israel. the israelis acknowledged that two of their shoulders had been killed in gaza in the last 4 hours. what we're seeing is, on the civilian side the situation is deteriorating. the hospitals, those that are actually functioning, are full of the wounded. the morgues are too full. we saw in one hospital they have a flatbed truck out in front full of dead bodies. victor, isabelle. >> we know isr

ben wedeman is in jerusalem. tell us about what has happened in southern gaza, specifically, over the past few hours. >> reporter: well, what we know, as you mentioned, is that the israeli military said they carried out 400 strikes in southern gaza, now, that compares to 300 on the last day of -- before the truce went into effect. so certainly it does seem to be more intense than it was before. now, according to a statement from the israeli military they hit a weapons storage compound and they said a mosque that was being used as a command center by not hamas, but rather islamic jihad. the palestinian ministry of health reports that as of this morning, at least 200 people were killed and 700 injured, many of the dead and injured, they said, are children, and this -- it's important to keep in mind that even the u.n. says that at least 40% of the population of gaza is under the age of 15. now, we've also seen that the arabic spokesman for the israeli military has ordered the inhabitants of three areas to the east a
