joining me is ben white economy reporter for politico and imogen webber, co-author of the twitter diariestuent parts of this fiscal cliff? >> you've got three pieces of it. you've got the bush tax cuts passed in 2001 and 2003 which are rates on all earners. you've got the president's stimulus tax cuts, the payroll tax cut on earnings that employees have and then you've got the sequestration budget cuts as part of the budget control act of 2011. altogether, you're talking about between $700 billion of spending cuts which if allowed to go into effect at one time, we would be talking about 5% of gdp which would send us into probably a recession in 2013. we would get a lot of deficit reduction. some people say let's do it and cut the deficit this way. you pay a price in a huge hit to the economy. >> eliot: just so i understand the raw economics. we're in a period of incredibly slow growth as we are you want government spending to go up and taxes to go down and what's going to happen here is taxes will up and government spending will go down. >> this is the exact opposite of the tan zanian res
