. >> more on gaza now, we're joined by ben white, author and journalist in london. once again, we get news of what appears to be an israeli attack on a u.n. installation, great loss of life, how do you think this will play out diplomatically now, as well with the tug of war over the terms of a ceasefire? >> it's hard to guess whether there will be any diplomatic impact of this new atrocity, given we're two and a half weeks into an attack that has killed before this attack, the last thing i saw, 746 palestinians, mostly civilians and of course including dozens and dozens of children. it's important to remember as well why attacks like this are taking place, why so many palestinian civilians are losing their life. it's a result of deliberate strategies by the israeli military. legal advice that the military walks under declares that civilians who have not heeded a warning to evacuate an area have made themselves liable to be targeted, which is in complete contravention of international law. we've seen the targeting of private family homes, 44 massacres of families gaz

. >> reporter: and ben white is an author and journalist specializes in israeli palestinian conflictlive from london and good to have you with us, can we start with the deteriorating relations between u.s. and israel and it was a fairly blunt phone call from barack obama to prime minister netanyahu, wasn't there? >> yeah, from what we heard of the contents of that phone call, president obama was warning or telling netanyahu there needs to be an immediate cease fire and that is a strategic imperative in obama language and took place in the context of a couple days of quite bitter on-and-off the record briefings by israeli and american officials. all centering really around a draft cease fire proposal that kerry put to the israelis late on friday and israelis felt this did not address their own concerns as a bulk of the proposal was repeating things that had been heard before due with negotiations for a longer term and cease fire in 2012 cease fire agreement and talked about opening up gaza crossings for the movement of goods and people and also mentioned israeli security concerns. isr

ben whooit there -- ben white there in london. this is news coming in to us here. it looks like the fighting continues to gaza. the latest line is that three people have been killed and five injured in a new attack in the district of gaza which was pounded heavily saturday night and sunday morning, and this follows, of course, the shelling of a palestinian hospital, al aqsa hospital in the west of gaza city. clearly casualties continuing as the shells continues there. perhaps somehow related to this, the lebanon-based group hezbollah is declaring its support for hamas and the palestinian resistance. that's after he called the president of hamas on sunday and praised the steadfast palestinian fighters in gaza and says hezbollah standses by them. since the war in gaza started, there have been a few incidents where small rockets were fire towards israel from lebanon. a man has been arrested for the attacks. he was injured setting off a rocket. he went to the lebanon's border with israel and met his family. >> as he walks the streets, a border village with syria and so

ben? >> inc. i think this is a pretty cynical political approximateli. this is inversion where companies nominally move overseas to lower their tax burden. the white house put no weight behind any of those proposals and he comes out with this proposal which all it would do is essentially disadvantage u.s. companies who already pay the highest global corporate tax rate already face u.s. tax rates on their overseas income and they do it basically because congress and the white house have not been able to do broad tax reform. you do it in a one-off and add to an already 70,000 page u.s. corporate tax code, a complete mess and they'll find another way to get around it. get acquired by a foreign company or find other loopholes to go through. this would not help our corporate tax system and i think obama is trying to score political points by wrapping patriotism. >> alison, do corporate leaders hear this? what do they think about it and how do they respond? >> my sense of the responders of what you said is however, i think there's something wrong. grant it, i agree we have way too many hope holes. if you get rid of those and lower the corporate tax rate

ben. this teenager is american born and that has triggered a response from washington. we go now to the white house for more reaction. so far we have heard from the u.s. state department in diplomatic terms language is everything. how strong is the wording of the reaction? >> reporter: no parsing of words necessary here. this was a very strongly worded statement sent out by the state department. the spokeswoman for the state department says, "we are profoundly troubled by reports that he was severely beaten while in police custody and strongly condemn any excessive use of force. we're calling for a speedy, transparent and credible investigation." today the israeli ambassador called the video very disturbing and he says that that's not something that israel will accept. he also went on to say that the teenager might have been more involved in prompting this attack than his family would like to think. >> we condemn excessive use of worse. it's unacceptable in our system. i will tell you from what i understand of the facts of the case, this is not an innocent bystander pulled off a school yard.

white house now with the latest on the investigation. kristen? >> reporter: i just spoke with deputy national security visor ben rhodes who tells me the evidence against russia continuing to be damning that they supplied the heavy weaponry to those russian-backed separatist that is it is believed shot down the plane mh 17. one piece of evidence he points to is the fact he says russia continues to supply the separatists with heavy weaponry even today. as for those two fighter jets that were shot down, rhodes says it speaks to a broader trend here that the separate is are targeting aircraft. they have taken responsibility for shooting down other aircraft as you pointed out but they won't take responsibility for mh 17. so as investigation continue, the e.u. is preparing to enact stiffer sanctions, sanctions that would target the financial, defense and energy sectors. that is significant because you will recall that the european leaders were hesitant to enact the same level of stiff sanctions the u.s. has. now it appears the eu. are moving to get on same page and we anticipate those sanctions could come within a month. u.s. officials tell me they are also

white house tonight. thank you, major. >> pelley: a death row inmate in arizona ran out of appeals. but there was a problem today at his execution. benracy is following this. >> reporter: we've just learned that the inmate joseph rudolf wood is now dead inside a florence arizona prison. but his execution this afternoon took more than two hours. joseph wood was being executed for a double murder he committed in 1989. his execution by lethal injection in arizona began at 1:52 this afternoon but he did not die until 3:49. his lawyers say he was still gasping and snorting towards the end. they tried to have his execution called off earlier with an appeal to the us supreme court because of what they call the secrecy surrounding arizona's the surpreme court denied that secrecy surrounding arizona's lethal injection drugs. the surpreme court denied that appeal. during the lengthy execution, his lawyer again appealed to try and stop the process but it was too late. >> now the prison had planned to use a drug in his execution that was used in three flawed executions earlier this year. and those cases, the inmates appeared to suffer respirator

ben wedeman, thanks so much. talking about an american citizen here, washington has weighed in with a response. at the white house with more reaction, we've been hearing from the u.s. state department today. it's made very clear that the u.s. expects a lot. >> that's right, fred. they have been direct in their response to this incident. they have condemned it, they've called for a quick investigation into it. we just received a new statement from the state department, if the investigation is concluded promptly, he should be able to return to florida as planned with his family later this month. we'll continue to monitor the situation closely. the israeli justice ministry launched an investigation and the state department reiterated they want it to be credible and transparent. >> okay. meantime, the president's jaebd this week, also includes heading to texas for a fund-raiser but the governor rick perry invited him to check out the border with mexico especially as debates heighten over immigration reform and what this white house is willing to do. has there been any new response from the white house? any chan
