ben white is here and we are here to ask him the question of how will the economic back drop shape politics in the new year. with us to discuss, of course, mr. white is politico's chief economic correspondent. and my question for you is this, given the numbers that we heard about last week, both on gdp and frankly where the dow is, i don't know, maybe take the dow out. just go with the gdp numbers, some of the wage numbers, all thoughts things. what does it do to the calculus for jeb bush, hillary clinton and maybe even elizabeth warren and others in the democratic party? >> i think it can't help but sort of make it harder for populist candidate toes make their argument that the cd economy is stuck and wages are not growing and that the economy is not growing fast enough. so i think if you're running in a good economy, that's a drn. >> so harder for elizabeth warren to make the -- hold on. >> does it change? we debate this argument all the time. >> it's not gone. it's just the sour feelings that people have had over the last eight years since the crisis have been driven by the lack of wage

ben white, chief correspondent at politico and a cnbc contributo contributor. to the r do you think the government will pass this spending bill even if it includes homeland security? >> it's not going to include homeland security. yes, they're going to pass it. it may require another day or two extension. there will be methods along the way as there always are. but the republican leadership doesn't want to shut down. it's not going to happen. my guess is the lights stay on thursday. >> ben, one of the factors that investors have not had to deal with this year is political uncertainty. that could change if congress does not pass a spending bill by midnight. there's the likelihood of a government shutdown. >> it's very -- i think it's very small at this point. you've got a lot of the republican leadership saying, you know, we need to show that we can govern, we're about to take over congress fully in the winter, in january. both the house and the senate, they don't want to start that off beforehand by shutting down the government. they want to push their agenda o

i saw you quoted in a piece that ben white has written recently about antonio weiss and the democratic what's going on. you know where i stand on that whole issue. but more broadly, what do you see actually happening inside the party and how do you think that will end up impacting the discussion over the next two years? >> there's no question that there is a difference of view within the democratic party. not only the difference to the republican party between different parts of the party who see the same problems, want to solve those problems, but have different ways of going about it. so there is the progressive end of the party that has a strong view about wall street and about business and about how people like us should be involved in government or not involved in government. and so that's really what's going on here. >> who's winning? >> who's winning? i think at the moment it's too soon to tell. i think elizabeth warren is a very forceful, very passionate, and important and valuable voice for her point of view. i do think at the moment that the tradition -- what i'll call tradit

>should the white house have ben aware of that question mark were you not aware of it? concerned at the time it could cause a problem if you were aware of it? to accountd for me for all of the conversations that took place between white house and administration oafish and negotiators in the house and senate as they were trying to carve out the agreement. matter, last year when the wall street reform provision was moved through the house as a standalone provision, the white house was clear about our strong opposition to that proposal. it was a pretty unequivocal declaration that this was opposed by the administration. that was opposition that was restated when it became clear that this provision was included in the compromise proposal. though it has passed the house of representatives, the administration continues to oppose that specific provision. this is the essence of compromise that there will be individual possess -- provisions in the bill that the president does not support. had he had the opportunity to write this legislation entirely on his own, i assure you, it
