benji, you mentioned donors and looking for money.big republican donor who could bank roll his choice for some time. he's there today. do you have any sense of the candidates which he's at least watching or who might get his support? >> well, there's no doubt adelson is the big prize here, one of the richest men in the world. the lavish ishish casino behind me the ven knee shah is his. now there have been some reports out there, one in politico that he had decided on rubio or was leaning towards marco rubio. been a very outspoken supporters of israel. i talked to a close friend of adleson's and other donors familiar with his thinking to some degree. what i hear over and over again it's unlikely he settles early on a candidate. a lot of time. people are starting to get involved. we can expect to see this play out before he starts overtly putting money behind one of the republicans. >> msnbc's jane tim, thanks from iowa. and we can all tell benji you're at the venetian hotel in las vegas, you're in the in venice. just saying to be clear

>> joining me now, benji sarlins. good morning to you, benji, who is getting the most buzz from the speeches yesterday and who is flying under the radar? >> well, new hampshire voters really like to kick the tires hard on these candidates. and part of that is they really like town halls specifically to really grill them. there was no shortage of tough questions for the candidates. so they handle themselves in the q&a portions stood out more. christie loves the town hall format. marco rubio got tough questions on immigration, including one questioner pretty openly hostile to spanish-speaking immigrants asking why they won't learn english, why aren't they teaching them english? rubio is from a bilingual household. but we also saw some interesting developments here, which is some of the early attacks on hillary clinton that we can expect to see for the next year and a half. so why don't we take a look here at the clip. >> she's the one that literally brought the reset button to the kremlin, to reestablish those new relat

msnbc political reporter benjy starlin joins us. benjy, what can we expect at the leadership summit? >> it's an unofficial kickoff to the primaries today. you'll have almost every single major presidential hopeful declared or undeclared here. today includes chris christie jeb bush marco rubio, tomorrow we have scott walker rand paul everyone gets a chance to make their case before an influential group of new hampshire republican operatives strategists, elected officials and at the same time many are doing their own events outside. jeb bush has one this morning, chris christie has a host of them. so does ted cruz rick perry. so this is really 2016 descending on new hampshire. >> james, the new hampshire primary is about 300 days away. how do granite staters view their role as the first in the nation primary state? >> very seriously. certainly there will be the people who pay to attend this event in nashua but all around the state where there will be dozens and dozens of event there is will be people particularly early activists who w

with me now is benji sarlin and loren fox from the "national journal.", a year and a half ago he was riding high how can he recover. >> i think he's going to make his pitch that he's a different candidate and has a different tone and message. that's what we saw on the "tonight show" last night. that's the environment he does well in going around to these town halls, he seems to connect with audiences. that's what he'll be looking for but he has a long way to go there are a lot of other energetic candidates who showed the poll with marco rubio leading that i think he'll have a hard time getting in front of. but an announcement can give you a little boost in the polls so we'll have to wait and see. >> clearly rubio's announcement gave him a bump. benji, tell us about the immigration issue with governor scott walker. >> sure. what's going on with scott walker is that for the most part in this campaign we've had a big debate over illegal immigration but not legal immigration. scott wachner an -- scott walkered said he had concerns about our legal immigration

here's benji to discuss this. right now marco rubio, how does he fit in this this race? >> marco rubio has been left behind a little bit in the early going here. he's not considered as popular with the conservative base as ted cruz. he doesn't have a natural constituency and when it comes to the big establishment side jeb bush sucks up the oxygen and especially here in florida. but you shouldn't count him out. he's a strong campaigner, he has a strong resume he's very comfortable talking to the press, dealing with voters. he doesn't easily make mistakes. he's someone who especially if jeb bush stumbles at the gate and isn't polling well a few months from now, a lot of those establishment republicans might want to give him the look as someone who can carry the party. >> how are democrats looking at rubio versus let's say jeb or the other ones? >> he definitely is considered a top-tier contender. this is someone i've heard democrats tell me they worry about as much as anyone else and if you look at his candidacy you can see why. he's one of the only candidates who really p

benji, welcome back to you.ence members i talked to really enjoyed his speech quite a bit, even those not necessarily a fan of rand paul as a presidential candidate. what struck me is that he spoke after a long long slate of speakers who are much, much hawkish. a lot of red meat on national security, on foreign policy and here was paul focusing his speech pretty significantly on arguing the u.s. needs to be less involved in military affairs abroad and arguing that we need to think about things like rights for suspected terrorists they should have a proper lawyer and miranda rights. one of the reasons he was able to keep people together with this unorthodox message is he's pretty good at attacking hillary clinton. here's what he had to say in his speech. >> i think that her dereliction of duty her not doing her job, her not providing security for our forces for to our diplomatic missions should forever preclude her from holding higher office. i'm starting to worry that when hillary clinton travels, there's going
