i'm jeff bennet in for my friend katy tur. we begin with breaking news from president biden just minutes ago on a big milestone in the race to vaccinate america. >> today, for the first time since the pandemic began, cases, pandemic cases are down in all 50 states for the first time. we're not done fighting these fires. we still have tens of millions left to vaccinate. but we are making significant progress. in fact, when tomorrow's vaccination numbers come out, they'll show that 60% -- 60% of americans have received at least one shot. every day the light at the end of that tunnel has grown brighter. >> 60% of adults with at least one dose, he says. it marks a big step toward the president's goal of 70% of americans with at least one dose by independence day. and toward our symbolic independence from this plague. but that's still months away. in the meantime we're left with state by state, store by store and sometimes customer by customer patchworks or rules about masks. after that surprise new guidance from the cdc last week,

i'm jeff bennet in for my friend katy tur. as we come on the air, we're following a lot of breaking news this friday. a major new development today in the house of republican reckoning, liz cheney doing battle over the big lie. >>> also the expected boom that was a bust. we have a new jobs report that many economists are describing as shocking. jobs added but far, far fewer than expected. what exactly is going on? well, part of the explanation ties directly into what is now more than just a worrying trend. first the good news. pfizer today has started the process of applying for full fda approval of its covid vaccine beyond the emergency authorization it was granted back in december. but here's the bad news. far fewer people are getting vaccinated every day than even just a couple weeks ago. president biden's goal is 70% of americans with at least one shot by july 4th. look, if we can't get shots into arms, we can't get back to normal. that means not only a disruption to our daily lives, it also means fewer kids in school, few

now the other thing to know is that this coalition, even though bennet is quite far to the right, is coalition is actually have quite a bit of the center and left in it. the, the, the one to found are the, the once labor party that is now shrunk, a lot merit, as we said, possibly the era party. so it's really quite a rod coalition, so very interesting. see what they're able to agree on. and i think what we'll find is that most of the initiatives that they seek to roll out will be domestic initiatives regarding the economy, even things like traffic accidents, which sounds quite prosaic, but really is a big problem. israel professor, we know now who is going to be working hard to sell this coalition as a danger to israel, an unsettling near future on the horizon. does he have a point and with that, does he have a chance of holding on? you know, i don't think that that message that he's going to try to get across to voters is really going to stick. because bennett is more b, b than be right, than it is, is quite very hard line on the palestinians. i la paid is a, is a secularist and a c

i'm jeff bennet in for katy tur. breaking news just in from the white house, the covid vaccine and the cdc. the cdc is ready to start its briefing any minute now, and we expect the director of the cdc to make guidance. fully vaccinated americans no longer need to wear masks or social distance indoors or outdoors. we also learned president biden will speak from the rose garden at 4:35 eastern on the pandemic response. we'll, of course, bring you those remarks when they happen, but first this new guidance. there are caveats to this new mask-free guidance including health care centers, public transportation and businesses that have their own mask rules. but obviously this is huge news after a year of masks. joining me now for more on this are nbc news correspondent monica alba, nbc correspondent miguel brewster in chicago, dr. vin gupta. thank you all for being here. i may have to cut you off if the briefing comes. give us a sense of what you expect dr. walensky to say, monica. >> this is quite different from the mask w

i'm jeff bennet. you have been watching an update from officials in san jose, california about another mass shooting in america. authorities say at least eight people are dead after a gunman opened fire in a railyard in san jose. police say the gunman is also dead. authorities say it was a man but they will not say how he died, if he shot himself or was killed in a shootout with deputies. we just learned a lot about that gunman, including his possible relations to the victims. he'll join us in a minute. we're also learning that more victims are being treated in hospitals, and santa clara medical center tells nbc news there is a patient there in critical condition. take a look at this. this shooting happened at the vta light rail facility, and you'll notice it's right next door to the santa clara sheriff's office. this whole thing happened just after 6:30 in the morning local time. authorities say that the deputies rushed into action. >> there was a rescue operation, so pretty much immediate action and

. >> reporter: ken bennet, hired by the republican-controlled arizona senate to help one this ballot on certain parts of the ballot to make sure where the ovals were filled in, there is a depression. instead, of the ovals being filled in by a xerox machine. >> is there a concern that ballots were xeroxed? >> there's always concern that we want to make sure that every ballot came from a -- an eligible-registered voter in maricopa county, as opposed to somebody trying to introduce unauthorized ballots. >> reporter: that's a conspiracy theory that ballots were, somehow, snuck in leading to donald trump's defeat in the state last year. these types of lies resonated with ballot counters, like eloise flag. >> i hope that we can come to a point where we are happy with the results. and truth is told. >> reporter: we talk to her as workers arrived outside the coliseum to count ballots. their cars covered with bumper stickers supporting trump and logos for conspiracy websites. >> do you think that donald trump won arizona? >> yes. i do. i think that donald trump won the election. firm believer
