joining us now from new york is maxwell a democratic strategist and guy benson the political editor for "town hall.com." okay. this is quite something. we have been hearing from the obama white house, the congressional budgetffice and any number of conservative economistst that this is serious. that we have got to get this thing done that we have got to get it in order. or at some point america's full faith and credit is going to go away. we are not going to look so good to the rest of the world as far as credit risk. so let's talk to you about this. is this a manufactured media crisis or does something substantial need to be done here? >> well, i certainly think that the fiscal cliff, that language is a manufactured media narrative. that americans believe on january 1 we are going to be standing in line for bread. that's not going to happen this is all because congress kicked the can down the road. after the debt ceiling, which was a real crisis. and so by not completing resolving that issue in a substantive manner. we now are here at this fiscal slope as i like to call it, not cliff.

megyn: guy benson is a fox news contributor.rom the gop side, that this was not an opener about it president in their belief, but the focus on not just raising taxes on the rich -- it can't just be getting rid of loopholes. the president is saying the rate has to go you have on the rich is about humiliatingup cans. how so? >> i think there are a couple things you have to look at. the offer the president put on the table was heavy on tax increases. $1.6 trillion with almost nothing specified or guaranteed on entitlements or reduction in spending. the white house says we need more details. the republicans say we put out things called budget. so we made it clear what our entitlement priorities are when it come to those changes. the president keeps saying we need more details to republicans and is putting the onus on them. how about sitting down at negotiating table and having a serious discussion rather than doing what he has done over the weekend which is go back on the campaign trail. he was in philadelphia again, it looked like

seemed to be -- i don't know guy benson but political edor for townhall.com wrote in september, 2012, talking about president barack obama's re-election. has been running millions of dollars worth of advertisements claiming that mitt romney's plans will raise taxes on middle class americans. this isn't true. romney promises precisely the opposite. in factcheck.org has called out democrats for repeated -- repeatedly debunked the charge. to paraphrase president clinton's d.n.c., it takes a lot of brass for criticizing someone for doing something you've done yourself. so before we get into the last punch line, let's go back to videotape. online it had a video that could be punched. it was president barack obama speaking. part of his quote says, i can make a firm pledge under my plan no family making less than $250,000 will see any form of tax increase. not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains tax. not any of your taxes. the article goes on. this man's firm pledges aren't worth too much, are they? it's worth -- if only to marvel at the sheer hypocrisy. congression
