sure that superfund sites are being cleaned up, those toxic brews in there, including things like benzene and arsenic and every other bad thing you can imagine. in my state, there's not one single e.p.a. inspector on the ground. i have established that. and that's the same in many othersment -- many others. 505 superfund sites were being cleaned up -- cleanup suspended. many children live near those sites. there are many schools near those sites. there are many homes near those sites. they are toxic waste dumps. no cleanup.

benzene has been discovered on- site. canadian pyrotechnicians say the train's cargo, crude oil, couldn't have caused the huge explosion. it's possible the search for answers lies here. the oil came from north dakota. it was extracted using fracking. that involves forcing oil out of the ground by injecting chemicals and water into it. the shale oil is then loaded onto trains in bakken in north dakota. they then travel to refineries on the east coast. they are like a pipeline on wheels. so, did the by-products of fracking produce the explosion on that train? residents are suing the oil companies. >> many companies have added chemicals to the salt water, like benzene, butane, lead and heavy metals. all toxic chemicals. that leaves traces in the oil and when they are present in such train cars, they can make them far more volatile. and that would explain such a high yield explosion and intense fire, which crude oil would not. >> raymond lafontaine received many calls. telling him to keep quiet, accusing him of hurting indust

it is not have the carcinogens like benzene. so there are a lot of benefits to using methanol. have our mental energy. we know how to do it. there are no technical verticals. you,d, before we jump to is there anything you would like to add reflecting on our conversation today? really very it is impressive to hear everybody talking about not only oil and but also other forms of energy including methanol. in the past, china -- we utilize to make ethanol, but later we realized that our call is not enough for peoples consumption. therefore we give up the idea of manufacturing ethanol from corn, and we manufactured methanol from coal because we have a lot of coal. i think that is really a very good form of energy and also very reliable form of energy. meanwhile, we will still rely on some other forms of energy, including nuclear and also hydropower. we will give more attention to methanol because before this seminar, i did not expect that people would be so interested in discussing this topic. behought everybody would interested in china's import of oil or natural gas. but that is a

super fund site, i can tell you it's a toxic brew, toxins that you know can hurt you, like arsenic, benzene, you name it. the worst things. now, i want to ask my republican friends, you shut down the government because you want to stop the affordable care act. you're also now stopping cleanup of superfund sites in your own communities where they're a threat to children, to pregnant women and to our families and our seniors. how does that make us a better country when we have no inspectors on the ground, not one in california, to make sure the air is safe and the water is safe? not one single inspector on the ground. then if you care about farming -- and i know most of us do -- e.p.a. is responsible for the inventory of pesticides that are imported from abroad. this means that millions of dollars of imported agricultural chemicals have been stuck at u.s. ports because e.p.a. personnel are not on hand to approve them for entry. this could be devastating for our agricultural economy and further raise food prices for consumers. somebody explain to me how a government shutdown helps the farmers

they have benzene. they have chlorine. they have everything in them that's bad for people to breathe, it's bad if it gets in the drinking water. no inspectors on the ground. and no cleanup at 505 superfund sites. remember fukushima? i think everyone knows what fukushima is. well, now 92% of the nuclear regulatory commission staff have been furloughed. they have one mission -- and i'm quoting from their mission -- to -- quote -- "ensure the safe use of radioactive materials." the army corps manages 12 million acres of public lands. they host 370 million visitors annually. this is just the time of year when people still, just before we get to winter, can go out there and enjoy the recreation. no. they're closed. and just think about the mom-and-pop shops that exist around our parks, our army corps land, our wildlife refuges. 561, they're all closed because of the shutdown. and hunting season is in full swing. i already talked about the fact that the national transportaion safety board furloughed 380 of its 400 employees and
