peter bergen, interesting report to hear from greg. both of these bombings apparently at least, again, these are early, sketchy reports based on his eyewitness account and the account of our producer, judging from where she believed the blast occurred inside the marriott, seemed to be in the cafe, on the ground floor. he was saying it was in a restaurant in the ritz on the second floor. it would seem to be both were restaurants, the site of the attacks if those reports are in fact true. >> i don't think we've seen that kind after tack before. i'm racking my brain. usually at tacks on hotels that we've seen have been suicide bombings, either driving a car or somebody coming in with a bomb. this seems to be sort of a new modus operandi. we have seen these attacks in indonesia, not on hotels but the nightclubs that were attacked in bali in 2002, where suicide bombers went into a crowded area and blew themselves up. in the bali 2002 attacks, two straight attacks, on nightclubs, requindted by westerners. >> 202 people killed in those bali b

we want to go to a soundbite from our terrorism analyst, peter bergen. he talked about how hotels are soft target and an attractive target for terrorists. i want to ask kathy to respond after the sound bite. >> western brand name hotels around the muslim world where al qaeda affiliates have a present have been a consistent target for these groups. going back, you mentioned the 2003 attack on the j.w. marriott hotel in jakarta. there have within a lot of others. an attack on a hotel in karachi in 2002, in jordan, the days inn in 2005, attack on a hilton in egypt. very recently, anderson, i assume you recall the attack on a marriott hotel in islamabad in pakistan. hotels in the hospitality business, they can't turn themselves into fortresses. they are soft targets. a western-owned hotel, western brand-name hotel is going to attract western tourists, western businessmen, business people, and, of course, they're going to be very attractive targets for those groups. >> no group has accepted a responsibility for these attacks. peter bergen and other experts we

let's bring in peter bergen, an expert on al qaeda and its affiliate groups.n you heard about this, these two hotel bombings, were you surprised? >> i was surprised because this al qaeda affiliate that's done so many of these attacks was really on the backfoot over the last several years. the indo-neeshen government has been capturing bomb makers, i think the wisdom that i shared was that this group was kind of, you know, really almost out of business. >> is it this group, do they directly coordinate with al qaeda in the sense that bin laden or ayman al zawahiri, on the loose right now, they plot, talk or it's just an inspiration? >> if you go to the bali attack of 2002 which 200 people died in, at that time there was a direct tie. there was also somebody who had been a close friend of bin laden who is in u.s. custody. now the links are much more inspirational rather than operational. >> the fact that they were two american hotels attacked, al qaeda has always said to itself if you destroy america's economic prowess, you destroy america. the world trade center

one of our terrorism experts, peter bergen, earlier on "anderson cooper," our u.s. show, had brought up this question. he was wondering, does this have any significance? i'd like to ask you this question. the fact that today is friday morning, it's a muslim holiday, and the reasoning being that observant muslims would not be in these locations like the cafe of a marriott or the cafe of a ritz-carlton. does the fact that today is friday carry any significance to you? >> yes, it is very possible. but i want to tell you that in islam, they will attack whenever they feel is the best moment to destroy a target. they wait for the most opportune moment on fridays, especially we see less muslims going public places, especially places where there are restaurants and where a lot of food may be served. >> what is the message here? >> message is really clear. that j.i. is still a very capable terrorist organization. indonesia and leaders must prosecute, criminalize the j.i. organization and dismantle the propagan propaganda, the fund-raising infrastructures. indonesia has done

perspective, let's go to national security analyst peter bergen. we have seen a couple of cases recently of american citizens being radicalized here in america and not just talking about violent jihad, but actually engaging in it. there were young kids in minneapolis, somalis, who ended up going back to somalia, and now this group. what's going on here? >> i think there's a sort of mini wave of homegrown radicals, american citizens. something i was skeptical would ever happen. american muslim s tend to be well-integrated into american society. whether it's a somali case of the minneapolis kids or some kids from seattle going over and conducting a suicide attack in somalia or in this case in north carolina where a number of them not only went to israel, but also to jordan and kosovo, according to the government allegations to try to engage in some kind of violent gee had. we saw a kid from long island just showing up in an al qaeda training camp in pakistan. that case coming public. i'm sure you recall the attack of little rock, arkansas, where an a

peter bergen is in our washington bureau and joins us this morning with more on this. the broader picture of afghanistan right now. peter, great to see you this morning. >> morning, kiran. >> taking a look at this video. they say it was shot on the 14th of july. they have no idea where dropping leaflets trying to cap intelligence. what else can they do in a situation like this? >> well, obviously, a rescue operation. my hunch is he's not in afghanistan, he's probably in pakistan already. we've seen this pattern with westerners being kidnapped in afghanistan by lower level taliban and either sold or given further up the food chain of the taliban leadership, which is all based in pakistan. we saw that with "new york times" reporter, other journalists kidnapped in afghanistan, similarly been taken into pakistan. obviously the united states has much less leverage and ability to find somebody in pakistan than they do in afghanistan, kiran. >> and so depending on who he was sold to, if you say they sort of do the selling back and forth, how does it determine the outcome? wha

joining me now is an officer from bergen county. i live in hoboken, and everyone is talking about this. the newly elected mayor has been in office three weeks, and everyone thought this guy was going to save the day. how is he connected to black- market kidneys? take us through the genesis of this? >> politicians are connected like this. there were two parallel investigations going on with the fbi and u.s. attorney's office in new jersey. one was the international scope of money laundering involving rabbis, charities, and people in israel to launder cash from the sale of state goods, including one of the kidneys. during that investigation, they came across a corroborating witness who had ties to developers as well as rabbis, but he also had connections to the political world. the fbi was apparently able to use this investigation to connect to politicians in new jersey. two worlds combined, hinging on a cooperating witness. juliet: i was surprised that the mayor was elected. the feds were obviously onto him away before the election.

the people we arrested came from ocean county, hudson county, union county, and bergen county.have search warrants on offices and residences of the new jersey commissioner of the division of community affairs and also the alliance commission. we also executed search warrants with the office -- jane: is that stunning, or what? 33 arrests. you heard the agents talking about it them talking about this scandals, ranging from the trafficking of kidneys to illegal goods. our federal prosecutor has been listening along with us. that is incredible. >> what dark day for new jersey that this correction appears to be completely random. false goods like gucci bags, allegations of buying kidneys for $10,000 and selling them for one 50,000 -- that is creepy to begin with. and these people were laundering money new, moving around the world to try to hide its sources, corruption. so this is a very sad day for the citizens of new jersey. jane: i guess we're used to a corruption have line. but these religious leaders acted as crime bosses. rise as of losses. >> that is simply outrageous. for the
