joining me now, cnn national security analyst peter bergen. a couple questions for you. how key this doctor was at the time in leading the cia to that location in pakistan and where has the lawyer been ever since? >> well in fact i don't think he was that key, brooke. let me just back up a second. so what happened was the cia got this doctor to mount effectively a vaccination campaign in the city where bin laden lived. they were basically going -- the idea was the doctor would, or his staff, would take dna samples from the bin laden kids as a result of this quote/unquote vaccination campaign. that never happened because the kids never came out. secondarily, the cia wasn't telling the doctor you're helping us to find bin laden. don't forget this was an incredibly tightly held secret. i think he's been portrayed in a lot of places as the doctor who helped find bin laden. that's not really true. he certainly was working for the cia. that's true. he's certainly in a pakistani prison on other charges for many decades. he's certainly a very unpopular figure in pakistan as a re

our national security analyst peter bergen is here with me.ee british boys who were arrest nd. now a california man is being arraigned today after allegedly attempting to go to syria. we had the story of three brook leadership men, a teen in minnesota. how do we gauge this threat from teenagers potentially trying to get into syria to hook up with isis? >> well i think there's two things wolf. one is the biggest threat that the teenagers face is going to syria themselves. these are kids. they don't know anything about being in the most violent country arguably in the world right now. some of them will end up dead if they get on the front lines. the second point is we've seen the foreign fighters quote unquote take leadership roles in isis. so the most brutal people in isis are the sale of brits who kit napped and behead american british officers. the foreign fighters are tenting to be the mere veer lent. i think it's not so much of a problem with them coming back. the authorities are keeping careful track of what they are. if they come back the

. >> peter bergen is one of the few who met face to face with osama bin laden. he joins us now. peter, i'm curious. the new pictures we're seeing how do they compare to the bin laden you met and interviewed just a year later? >> i think they're very different, anderson because this is a much more sort of relaxed bin laden. we met him in the middle of the night. they were very concerned about representatives of an american news organization interviewing him. he spent two days with at least bin laden's company, and they sent these series of pictures we're seeing for the first time. as far as i can tell the first time that we've actually seen the hideout where bin laden lived in such detail. the hideout, of course was destroyed by u.s. bombs a few weeks after 9/11. i had gone after that area all of that bin laden compound was completely bombed out. so it's a different picture, and of course at the time anderson when he was, you know, these pictures were taken, there was a lot of stuff in the future we didn't know. 9/11 the embassy attacks, et cetera. >> and how much of that was alr
