finally, it was irene a jewish girl from amsterdam who was freed from the bergen-belsen concentration camp in 1945 the trade, the same trade that ingrid was on that provided a similar lesson for me about how we might deal these people in times of war. always remember irene taulbee during an interview at her home in ann arbor, remember this, enemies are people whose stories you haven't yet heard. and whose faces you have never seen. my gratitude goes to the characters in my book that after 72 years had the courage to tell their stories and show their faces. thank you very much. these were 100 jews who made it out of bergen-belsen when you and your brother and sister and mom andad went into germany. ingrid's face, her hands came to her face, and she said, what? she marked with her index fingers each name, and when she got to ingrid -- i said, this is the one who was exactly your age, and i showed her a picture of irene. she said, this changes everything for me. it makes everything that happened somewhat worthwhile because irene and her family got out, and she said, how many people can say that they were part of something like that? >> what year did ingrid come back to the states? >> she came into the states in 1948 and lived with an aunt and an uncle with her brother. she and her brother came together. eventually, everyone in the family made it back. her brother joined the air force, and he became very important to the air force and had top security clearance. he was eventually able to get all of his family back. joanna, his mother, became a citizen. >> the father. >> he died of a heart attack. eventually, these people made it back, which says something about
