this has been a troubling few weeks here at berkeley high school. late afternoon a parent spotted what they thought was a young man with a gun in his waistband near campus. beck berkeley police tried to find this person and did not find them, but the school was put on lockdown for 30 minutes. there have been other gun-related incidents in recent weeks. it has become such a hot issue that a special board meeting was held here wednesday night when parents were outspoken and worried about their kids' safety. many want a closed campus here at berkeley high. it is not closed right now. they are also calling for some metal detectors or an id system to keep track of the people here on campus. last week two students were arrested after a gun they brought to school actually went off in a bathroom, a third student was also arrested for having an unloaned gun here as well. we'll keep talking about the ideas here, but we are told there will be more security on campus and also a text tipline for students who want to get information to authorities. reporting live

you can see behind the berkeley police van. it looks like the robots they use when they have a standoff with somebody. instead of putting an officer in the line of fire. we got here probably around 3:30 this morning. we had a camera here as early as 9:50 last night. some of the things we saw out here was a heavy police presence. they used resources. not only the berkeley pd but the oakland pd. they had a bear cat out here from the oakland pd. they negotiated with the person inside who's name they are not giving. they didn't say what prompted the man being held up inside. they responded here around 7:30 last night because they had reports of shots fired. just a moment ago a member of the berkeley police department came out here and described what happened when they entered the house. >> we entered the house. we contacted one individual who we believe to be our subject. and upon contact he appeared to be suffering from a self- inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: if you take a look down the street you can see yellow tape off aro

anne makovec live over berkeley, thank you. >>> 5:03. today is the third and final day of federal hearings into the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. things will get under way in washington just about an hour from now. christin ayers is in the cbs 5 newsroom with a look at who is testifying today and some disturbing new details. >> reporter: good morning. day 2 brought some shocking new information about just how little the city of san bruno firefighters knew about the pipeline that exploded on september 9 killing 8 people. fire chief dennis haag admitted yesterday under sworn testimony that he and his firefighters had no idea there was a large gas transmission pipeline running under the city until after the explosion. haag said pg&e never educated firefighters about the line or showed them where it was. in fact, when firefighters originally responded to the san bruno blast, they believed a plane had crashed. haag insisted that what they didn't know did not hamper their response. >> the fire department was only aware -- we thought the

cracking down on parking sheets in berkeley is going high-tech now. the city of berkeley plans to install new license plate recreation software. this is part of a pilot program that will be tested in the north willard neighborhoods. it will be more effective than chalking the tires. >>> a woman that was run over by that shuttle bus in downtown berkeley is expected to survive. the news chopper 2 was flying over this scene at center street yesterday afternoon. the 54-year-old woman was seriously hurt. she and a friend were walking across shatick in a crosswalk when she was hit and trapped underneath that shuttle bus. her friend said she had to bang on the bus to get the bus drivers attention. >>> all right tara moriarty is in for sal this morning covering traffic. she says it's slow going in parts of the commute. >> it has been sluggish on 580 in livermore. we've had a couple accidents in that area this morning. one was a stalled car that was blocking part of the roadway. crews were able to move that vehicle to the shoulder in just the past few minutes.

at the uc campus in berkeley. uc police investigated a 70 year-old student was using this pathway and notice the issue was being followed. investigators said that this and she got over the bridge she noticed a man exposing himself. she turned and tried to get a way the man grabbed her. custer, in a properly she screamed. he touched her-and a properly. the suspect is black, early 20s, fan begin build. with a red baseball cap and a black jacket. and a medium-build. uc-berkeley is going to beef up patrols, and also speak with local authorities on if this physical description is meeting any outstanding crime. >>pam: 41 year-old quarter holbrook of livermore was arrested in howl for homicide. the victim remains on known programs of to the hospital and that hospital does not have a trauma ward so the victim was transferred by ambulance to castro valley. he died of his step wounds. police in the altercation started on first street near the 580 on ramp. they traveled down and ended up on hold for st. the suspect even.. an

going over berkeley heading right, yeah, berkeley and also to richmond and come out a little bit here on this. and we'll see where it's heading. mainly toward interat a time 80. but then back over on the richmond side and over towards san francisco. looks like right near the bay bridge, hugging the bridge as well we have a line of rain stretching from the east bay which is picking up and filling in. nothing too heavy, but moderate to heavy for a brief period of time, 24 to 42, 680, highway 4 and down towards the south bay. there's been a line of shower activity starting to pick up on the peninsula as well. and then from the mountains over towards monte ray. there's moderate to heavy rain south san francisco, and then stretching back in towards north beach as well. our system will do that. it will give us rain off and on and shower activity. 2inches redwood city 1.75. dublin 1.5. concord, over 1.25. lexington reservoir up to the mountains, reports of 2.75 to over 3.5 inches of rain. san jose up. 40s on the temperatures just a cold day. one more system has to drop in. rain on saturday.

well, rather, on the streets of berkeley. at one point we understand the woman crashed into this apartment complex behind me. she unfortunately damaged a pretty major support beach. if i step out of the way you can see where some of that damage is out there. crews just got to the scene a couple minutes ago to kind of start the repair work. this was damage to the bushes, side of the building, scattered glass as well out here. berkeley police department not talking much this morning. but the information that we have gathered is mostly from witnesses and some video that was taken out at the scene. we know that before 2:30 this morning, berkeley police department got a call from this location at stewart and sacramento. we still don't know what exactly brought them out here to begin with. but when they got here, a woman in her car rammed into the officers' patrol car. you can see the damage to the front of the car in that video. then she continued, this time plowing in that apartment complex and her ride wasn't over yet. she took
