fire overnight at alice water's famous restaurant in berkeley. christie smith joins us now with details. >> even the bet attalion chief d his heart sank when he learned which restaurant was burning overnight. the world famous restaurant co-founded by alice waters. you can't see that much damage from the street here. what they are telling us is that most of the damage is down the side. it did make its way in the building even up to the second floor. this is a single alarm fire that started just after 3:00 this morning. right now the fire is out. we're not even seeing the firefighters on top of the building like they were just a while ago with their chainsaws. the battalion chief was among the first on scene. >> they're definitely going to be out of business for some time. there's some flame inpingment to the interior of the building. luckily they had a sprinkler system and that held the fire mostly to the exterior. there's significant damage to that front of the build and down the side and underneath toward the basement. >> reporter: they're telli

>>reporter: jeremy goulet convicted of only misdemeanor in san diego, portland and berkeley but we also learn he also faced 2 separate rape charges. jeremy goulet history of sexual assault goes beyond peeping tom type misdemeanor. he faced 2 rape charges while in the army in 2006. which could have put him away for life. we spoke to the defense attorney who represented him. he says the first alleged rape happened after party just days after goulet arrival at the wheeler army airfield in hop loo-loo. >> one of the women at the party retired for the evening and went back into her home locked all of the doors and mr. goulet was accused of crawling if through the bathroom window and raping her. >>reporter: second alleged rape hanl hand happened only few months later assigned to watch over barrack. he allegedly raped another female officer after she came home from a party while he was on shift. despite the seriousness of both cases goulet plea bargain less than honorable discharge. >> i can say there was identification issues in the first case and the second case there was credibility issues.

the world renowned chez panisse indicate fire here in berkeley this morning. we have video from two hours ago. crews arrived on the scene and found the fire starts outside and quickly spread to the second floor. the kitchen, though, is in the rear of the building so it is mysterious as to what started the fire the no one was here at the time. firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to next door businesses. they are actually touching the restaurant. crews told abc7 news this morning. >> at this point, it appears to be an exterior fire that was working its way on the interior. our fire investigators arrived on the scene and said they would do a further investigation and it will be, they will be able to determine if it was completely on the exterior or some other cause. >> many questions remain, the investigation, of course, is in the early stages here at alice waters restaurant. since 1991 it

overnight fire at the world famous chez panisse restaurant in berkeley.ters just arrived on the scene within the last half hour or so. christie smith joins us live with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. that's right. chez panisse co-founder alice waters got here maybe 15, 20 minutes ago. she was briefed by berkeley firefighters outside of the restaurant and then they took her inside but before that happened she got a hug from the general manager of the restaurant who has been on scene all morning long. waters started the restaurant in 1971. her organic sustainable food became world famous. the start of california cuisine. a deputy fire chief showed us the damage and he says a sprinkler inside made all of the difference perhaps stopped the building from burning down. it's an all wood building. the fire started outside of that building about 3:00 in the morning. single alarm fire. firefighters found smoke and flames at the rear and front and side of the building outside. damage they say spread inside. they knocked it down quick
