kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran live in berkeley with what's next for the berkeley officers.ate. >> reporter: good afternoon, frank. there's a study down independently by the berkeley police association. now officers say they are ready to move forward with these results. now, the survey found that 83% of berkeley residents surveyed support investigating tasers to control violent criminals. the berkeley police association saysists officers want this as an additional tool in fighting criminals. there have been numbers of times where they say they have faced dangerous situations where a taser would have been more appropriate and a safer tool than firearms or physical force. in the press conference today, officers cited national studies that say tasers save lives and reduce suspect and police injuries. currently berkeley is one of three law enforcement agencies in the bay area not using tasers or investigating their use. the berkeley police association says they are certain they want this as an option for their officers. >> we are really look at having a taser available when we a

the berkeley police officers association just announced a decision on whether to push for its officers to use stun guns. the tools have been controversial in the bay area. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live with what the berkeley officers decided and how they reached that conclusion. tara? >> reporter: they are pushing forward with this idea to arm their officers with stun guns. they surveyed about 600 people and 80% of those surveyed said they approved of the idea. they wrapped up a press conference an hour ago. they say they want to present the results to the city council next and get more public feedback. berkeley police and alameda police are the only two agencies in alameda county that don't use tasers. >> if we can save one person's life by deploying a taser versus a firearm then berkeley city leaders have a responsibility to at least look into tasers for our police officers. >> reporter: residents surveyed said they preferred taser use to physical force and gun use because they felt it reduced the chance of death. >> i think in some circumstances using tasers is the better way t

uc berkeley police this morning arrested four people for trespassing on a piece of land known as the guilt trap. they were the only ones who were later identified as friends of brook moran. >> it is really -- the university should be looking at it as an opportunity to do something transformative and i am upset about how they are destroying a beautiful public project right now. >> reporter: uc berkeley police told the activists they had to leave because the land is owned by the campus. one was arrested for not leaving and just after 9:00, they brought in a tractor to mow the plants that were grown. one activist tried to jump on the tractor to try to stop it. >> they are doing illegal acts on our property. >> reporter: the piece of land is already slated for development. they are expected to break ground early next year. this is the last piece of fertile land in the east bay. >> this is an absolute disgrace to be tearing out these crops. >> reporter: those arrested will be facing trespassing and resisting arrest charges and i just got off the phone and they said they will be reconvenin

berkeley to plant organic crops today. they previously occupied the school's gill tract which led to several members being arrested. a planned supermarket dome at the site was approved by the city but it fell apart when whole foods decided to pull out of the deal. now there are plans for a smaller sprouts farmer's market at the site. occupy the farm wants the land reserved for urban farming. the university said it will not allow a permanent encampment and it will do what is necessary to protect property rights. >>> this morning oakland has its third police chief in four days. anthony torrebeo was named interim chief thursday after one stepped down. deputy sean went will serve as the new interim chief. he was previously in charge of the department's internal affairs unit. torrebeo has assumed the range of captain. officials say his decision to step aside is voluntary. lisa argen is keeping an eye on the forecast which is one thing now and it will be something different later. >> absolutely. we have the clouds behind us and
