berkeley fire was called to the scene. when people started to leave the building they saw plumes of white smoke from between two buildings on university avenue. they were not sure of the source but a witness smelled something that smelled electrical. crews found what was happening. >> looked like it may have been caused by smoking material above the debris pile, possibly the fire is out just clearing out the smoke. >> a resident was smoking in the building. it is important to mention that is a nonsmoking building but they were tossing the cigarettes out the window below, not knowing what was down there. between the two buildings were the personal belongings of a resident who formally lived in the building and the belongings caught fire from the cigarette butt and the chief explained when the materials caught fire it ignited and that was the source of the fire. one person was treated for smoke inhalation but they refuse the transport. the chief says they are expecting to be okay. the chief says everyone in the building did

in berkeley, philippe djegal, kron four news. sonoma arrest warrant scheme-ots sheriff's officials are warning sonoma residents of a phone scheme. police say, a caller tells residents. they're wanted on an arrest warrant. then. the caller demands money. he has been using the names brent jones or tommy jones. the caller claims to work at the sherriff's office. and tells the resident to purchase a pre- paid debit card, and tell him the information. earlier in the week. some residents received similar calls from people claiming to be with sonoma county court. law and order may soon be coming to california medical marijuana shops. a state lawmaker introduced new legislation to regulate the multi-billion dollar industry. if passed -the bill would affect growers, sellers and doctors who recommend the drug. the proposed bill requires doctors to report on how many recommendations they give out and why. and requires the california department of public health to license dispensaries --but only if they first obtain an operating permit from

. >> reporter: students here at burke b whod -- university of california at berkeley who said they were treated unfairly by the university and some students filed a lawsuit as a result. this policy announced today enacts new protections for victims but some say it doesn't go far enough. the policy applies to students, faculty and staff and expands training and education and increasing reporting requirements of sexual sexual assaults. they released the policy to conform with the violence against women act and it comes as students at university of california at berkeley took their complaints to state lawmakers seeking an audit into unfair treatment and also 31 students two weeks ago announced a lawsuit. she is one of the plaintiffs and she says the policy has its short comings although she said it was an improvement and one of those improvements, she said the policy expands the definition of lack of consent, including incidences when alcohol is used as an excuse, what she says is the policy says no is no longer the requirement. one of the problems that is that victims do not have under th

there was a fire on university avenue and according to the berkeley fire department the exterior fire started in the alleyway between two building.
