the city of berkeley has seen a rise in violent crime... including robberies. mayor... the way to combat those crimes is to hire more police officers. mayor jesse arreguin says the city is about 25 officers away from their authorized level of 176.. and he says the low staffing makes it difficult to respond to crimes. some officers have left the department because of salary... others because of lack of community support. residents we spoke with say they can understand that.
