they were hoping to stop this project despite uc berkeley and the city of berkeley talking about the desperate need for more housing and for the students because uc berkeley right now they provide the fewest amount of houses far as beds for their students in the uc berkeley system. now, the lawmakers just the other day on monday, they unanimously passed assembly bill 13, 0, 7 rain and that basically bypasses that noise ordinance, therefore allowing construction to possibly begin. now, the bill. we'll go right before governor gavin newsom's desk who has already said that he supports the bill once he signs it into law in this state supreme court, they will look at it to see if it's okay. once that's done, then people's park, at least most of it will turn into housing. they will spare about 2.8 acres of that particular place for open places, open spaces for people to enjoy. but the bottom line is that 1970's law, which has been in effect for 53 years, will not pertain to this project, at least not much longer. back to you. all right. well, thank you for that breakdown. >> have some deve

the coastline today are looking out over the bay right now from the berkeley hills and still seeing plenty of that smoke in our skies. now, air quality has been suffering, as you might expect. you can see the areas in orange that is some poor air quality in parts of the north bay in novato san anselmo and then stretching across the east bay into oakland. further south in castro valley. also the san leandro and hayward and fremont and even into san jose. other plots around the bay area, mainly in the yellow. so it's really impacted the bay area. you can see the forecast. the northerly winds kicking again overnight tonight. but then something changes by the afternoon. we start to see more of a westerly wind. so you see that in polls of the colors, that smoke coming down the bay area by tomorrow morning. but by the afternoon we get more of a sea breeze kicking in. that is going to bring some fresh ocean air on the way. still, it's going to take some time to clear out. we'll talk more about that and the rest of your forecast coming up in a few minutes. thank you, lawrence. with the air quality

so at berkeley lab and uc berkeley, we cracked the genetic code to trick bacteria like e coli to turnther renewable carb sources into the building blocks for new plastics that are easier and cheaper to recycle. as you mentioned, these plastics are called poly amines or pdx. we think that about 10% of all plastics can be replaced with pvcs, where we would look to use them in things like mattresses, furniture, shoes or even clothing. we also found that these bio alternatives are greener and cheaper than petrochemicals. once we advanced to production scale and we're currently partnering with companies to develop these plastics for use in their products. we give them materials choices that are more sustainable and more recycling and efficient options to reuse those materials in their manufacturing and subsequently. so i mean, i think people are listening to this and they hear, well, you know, obviously this is a greener alternative when it comes to plastics here. but but will these biological alternatives be less expensive than plastics created using petrol chemicals, especially when you

today and tomorrow it is moving day on the uc berkeley campus. campus and the education is just like unbeatable, but it was far enough from home. i kind of wanted to get out far, but not too far. for freshman sophia yoshino and her family from orange county. she's one of the more than 14,501st year students admitted to cal this year. and one of a larger group of california residents admitted cal accepted 465 more in-state students this year compared to last year. uc berkeley also accepted a larger number of first generation college students. the number of students in this class whose parents did not have a four year degree was up more than 500 students compared to last. but on this moving day, there are students of all types and backgrounds from all over the world. you said you're from boston, mass. i just got in and i was so excited. so i decided to go here right away. all of the visitors parents, mostly who helped move in those new students, also end up providing a boost to the local economy. we've been here since sunday morning and kind of han

we're also at berkeley, move-in day at cal. >>> good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. we're going to get to all those stories in a few minutes but we are following breaking news. that's where we want to start. a brush fire along 101 in morgan hill. started about two hours ago about 5:00. the fire has grown to 30 acres. thankfully, no homes are being threatened. cal fire says its crews are making good progress. that's an aerial shot now. some time lapse video. this is a live look at the scene. 101 is still open, but traffic is slow in both directions. here's the vantage point. southbound 101 is problematic at this time. the left side of your screen is northbound 101. you can see those fire engines there and some of the burn scars. that's where the fire actually is off the northbound part of 101. but traffic is moving. it's slow, but it is moving. as for the smoke, that smoke is slowly drifting now north heading towards south san jose. our crews are onsite. you can see by our live camera here. we will keep you posted on any updates coming from this brush
