tonight the city council is expected to ask the city manager to study this proposal. berkeleyse isn't the only place facing a housing crisis and trying to do something about it. today the san jose city council will consider putting $5 million towards forgivable loans to homeowners willing to build a granny unit on their property, something that could be rented out, loans of up to $20,000 would cover planning permit and other pre-development costs. the loans would be forgivable for homeowners who agree to set rents at an affordable level and rent to people of low or moderate income. the housing trust of silicon valley would be administering that loan program. santa clara university is asking the city of san jose to rezone a three-acre property near the university to allow residential development for affordable housing for its professors. the three-acre industrial property is located on campbell avenue near university baseball diamond. it is proposing the construction of 290 units of below market rate housing on that piece of property. reporting live here in berkeley, all right,
