. >>> a homeless camp could be popping up in berkeley, and this one is approved by the city. however, that location not sitting well with some of the people who live nearby and work nearby. nbc's bay area's melissa colorado joins us from berkeley with more on the city's plans. >> reporter: we're right off the university avenue exit along interstate 580. if you know this part of berkeley, chances are you've driven past this homeless encampment. it's very visible and people are sleeping in tents dangerously close to traffic. this has also become a magnet for illegal dumping. the city is considering inviting these people to live in a sanctioned homeless camp where there will be a row of tents and services like bathroom showers, et cetera. the question is where is the best place for that camp? >> the status quo is not working. >> reporter: it's a game of musical chairs that no one likes to play. in recent years berkeley's homeless have set up their tents on sidewalks or on land owned by cal atransalong interstate 580. >> they have asked where do we go? we need to figure that out.
