it's not only oakland, but berkeley hills, castro valley. between the hours of say sunrise and let's say 10:00 a.m. you can see the windsic be up in intensity over here. the rest of the day and it will stay windy and turn off completely. it is not terrible for most of us, but it will be the morning hours for the east bay communities on the downwind side of the east bay hills that might feel a little bit more. so be aware of that. then things will quiet down. remember, that will expire on tuesday at 10:00 a.m. there is one other element to discuss in the weather. let's get back to the virtual map because there is another area to color in on here. frost advisory for the next couple of mornings. if you look at the morning lows, you will be going down to the mid-30s for the inland east bay valleys. that's not worse in the north bay, but you would have your awareness level already elevated. you would have a cold morning this morning, and if there is any pets or plants that need to be taken care of. you're in that frame of mind. but for the east b

this is the gift that keeps giving live shot from berkeley hills, looking toward the golden gate after sunset clear as a bell, beautiful conditions. and here are today's high temperatures. the observed ties they just happened and there is many as 10 degrees warmer than normal. you can see the normal numbers. 57 normal in santa rosa. 67 today in santa rosa. you know, he's numbers are cooler than yesterday. yesterday, santa rosa hit a record high of 72 degrees was a record for the date and now lot cooler in some spots down 5 degrees in santa rosa down 7 in san francisco down 6 degrees in livermore. so we're cooling off a little bit. and yet we're still way above normal temperatures right now. cooling down quite nicely. some areas well into the 50's. now. 58 fremont 60 still in oakland. 57 for the celebrations in san francisco and the air quality here is just beautiful, great conditions. we don't have any problems. it's all of the greens, which is what we want to see. future wind gusts and we see basically it's just not much, not much wind going on until we get into thursday morning into

this is the view from the berkeley hills right now looking just dry and clear. we have very calm and tranquil weather. although this morning we started out with the wind advisory. we had some very gusty winds, offshore winds and then they die down quickly. so the wind advisory was actually canceled. now, the winds are really fairly calm, still offshore. no doubt about that. that will continue overnight. but still, we do see at least below 9.10, miles per hour in many locations in terms of humidity because of all the rain we had, we still have fairly dry atmosphere. so the relative humidity, future humidity for tomorrow night, we're going to be at 49% and that that 39% in hayward. so it's not bone dry. unlike southern california, boy, did they have cold and dry dry conditions? and that is what is really fueling the fire. the winds combined with all the dry conditions and the dry tinder, dry vegetation, but not for us. this is the water vapor image. you can see a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, especially way north of us heading from the pacific all the way to

close to a half inch berkeley hills. just over a quarter inch.ose 11 hundredths and redwood city coming in at eight hundredths. now, when it comes to our rainfall season, we're still looking at this massive surplus up towards parts of the north bay santa rosa. so far this season, 25.60in of rain. that's 13.14in above normal. and that's why we saw those trees come down in guerneville. the ground for a lot of the north bay is just still so saturated. running a deficit here in oakland, livermore and also san jose. but we can still make up from that with additional storm systems this season coming up later on in the show. we'll take a look at some fog for your saturday morning, and we'll take you all the way into next week. i've got that forecast again in about 15 minutes. looking forward to it. thank you jeff. the storm is also dumping snow in the sierras. this a view from i-80 just past soda springs. the highway is closed going eastbound and it's pretty much looked like this all day. chp is dealing with spinouts and other issues all afternoon. high

looking from the berkeley hills, you still see some clouds out over the bay right now. rainfall yeah, not bad. almost a half an inch into santa rosa just under a 3rd in napa. just a little less than that in richmond, san francisco 18, 100's to tents in oakland and jult over a 10th of an inch of rain in san jose. but as i mentioned, this may be it. we're going to see major pattern change. and that's going to mean a big dome of high pressure for us and some very cold weather across other parts of the country. but here's that front moving through today, bringing lots of snow in the high country. they're more scattered showers on the backside. we've got a warm or band of moisture likely to move in a little bit later on this evening. but mostly dry out there right now. and that's the way likely stay as we head toward the weekend. winds yet been little blustery in spots. we've seen some pretty good breeze is out there as we head throughout the afternoon. some of those winds gusting to as high as 30 miles an hour or so. but now begin in the back office. that system continues t

i saw a few high thin wispy cirrus clouds in the sky and take a look at this view from the berkeley hillse sun shots went down and now we see all the yellows and oranges. and if you read it, thank you. absolute spectacular view for us. it's been really a beautiful day with temperatures just a little bit cooler than yesterday in some areas. here are the high temperatures cooler than normal. maybe 2 to 6 degrees cooler than you might expect on this date number. still in the 50's upper 50's into the 60's mid-sixties for half moon bay. 66 degrees. and in terms of the temperature change will 6 degrees cooler. then yesterday in santa rosa. so made most areas now statue down to 4. but most areas little cooler than again, san francisco up one degrees. so it's not much variation temperatures right now. 50's and 60's. and now that the sun has set, the temperatures will start to drop even more last night into this morning. it was really, really cold. and then we even had some frost advisories in effect because we had 32 degree temperatures overnight last night in napa and santa rosa and concord and

the berkeley hills are very, very narrow, curvy streets.and like i said at the beginning of the class, the geology goddess lucy jones said that the best thing you could do to be prepared is know your neighbors and know who is vulnerable, who might need help. yeah, organizers say there were 70 people on the waiting list for this introductory class. it is the first in a series of seven classes. the city is adding two more classes to accommodate everyone interested in this program. and rob mayeda is here. now, rob, let's talk about these fires in socal, because i think last week we looked at a drought map and up in northern california, we were doing way better than southern california. yeah, in both areas, seeing offshore wind obviously stronger in southern california, but really a tale of very two different areas when it comes to the rainfall we've seen to start this year, benefiting from the very active november and december in the bay area. look at this map. and it's just two sides of the same coin for zenni. you've got one area well above

beautiful weather from the berkeley hills towards san francisco today was really hot. temperatures soared well above seasonal averages. so typically be mainly in the mid to upper 50's. you see there in gray. we were in the mid 60's to low 70's and santa rosa at 72 was 15 degrees warmer than you expect this time of year. even now we're still in the 60's in many areas. how much warmer than yesterday at this hour, a whopping 16 degrees warmer in santa rosa. 17 degrees. warmer in livermore. 10 degrees. warmer hayward. so you get the idea. it's a lot warmer. wind gusts are really going strengthen overnight about 02:30am in the morning. i be the very strongest gust. and in some areas, even 50 mile an hour gusts. 45 to 55, depending on where you are in very highest elevations and then by sunrise tomorrow morning, those winds start to die down and looks like not much of the wind can concerned. once we get past that high winds. oh, yeah. there's a high wind advisory in effect till tomorrow except for the santa clara valley. i've got a lot more details coming up, including your

here is a view from the berkeley hills looking west toward the sun.at shape temperature change. yes, it is. cooler. then it was yesterday, but not a whole lot. just by a few degrees. maybe 4 degrees cooler in santa rosa and in half moon bay. otherwise, pretty steady as she goes. look at these numbers. it's january early january. a lot of numbers today peaked in the 60's. well, sausalito, 59 degrees in fairfax. 51 the calistoga 62 in terms of the winds, not as gusty as we've been seeing the last number of days today. if you look at the gus is not terribly remarkable. but then look at this. what's this overnight? thursday morning, starting thursday morning into friday. look at this. a cooler start to increase. you start to see more magenta and again, we get a bit of a strengthening of the offshore flow, not as dramatic as we have seen before. now, looking for rain looking looking looking all the way through tuesday looks dry. so high pressure continues to reign. supreme and we will be a continued persistence forecast. they we get the same thing over and

beautiful, though, today as we take a live look here from the berkeley hills, seeing all the way across the bay to the golden gate bridge. just beautiful visibility. temperatures are warming up. we are at 60 degrees in san jose. 53 in alameda concord, 57 same store in san francisco about 57 degrees. and we're rolling into some nice low 60's up in the north bay as well. so another day that is off to a good start for us here after a chilly start, a little bit of wind but negligible. so we don't have any issues with that today. you can see we've even last a little bit of the offshore component storm tracker showing you just gorgeous blue skies. the clouds are well off shore. in fact, take a look at this. you can really see that arc of high pressure, that ridge that has built in as you see the clouds that are shooting right over the top of us and headed for places like portland and seattle. we are in what's called a rex block. this is a blocking pattern where high-pressure and low-pressure stack on top of each other and until one of them moves, we really don't see any changes. now. this is

the 1991 berkeley and oakland hills fire broke out under very similar conditions and with similar troublesome evacuation routes. it's not new news to the people of berkeley, and i also mentioned that the whole north side of berkeley burned in 1923, and the same conditions and that and the number one thing that we've learned from this is that when these fires and these winds do occur is that we encourage people to evacuate early. and organizers say there were 70 people on the waiting list for this introductory class. it's the first in a series of seven classes. the city is adding two more classes to accommodate everyone interested in this program, and a lot of people are interested right now, especially rob and here in the bay area to just today, i was walking around and it was so windy. and then i thought, what's happening in southern california today? yeah, we are more fortunate because we did have ample rain from november into december. but again, kind of a clash of climates here too, between what the hills are seeing, gusts over 70mph today in the north bay. meantime around the inner bay,

the same kinds of roads we have in the berkeley and oakland hills and throughout the bay area, roads that can create death traps if everyone tries to escape. at the same time, several bay area counties like alameda, santa clara and san mateo county use a software system called genesis, formerly known as zonehaven, to guide evacuations in real time by typing in your address or phone number. the system is also used in l.a. county. the software uses an algorithm incorporating factors such as weather, traffic flows, and historical disaster data to generate a digital map that will guide you to a safe location. last december, vehicles stretching for miles along highway 92 tried to exit half moon bay after a tsunami warning. following the incident, the san mateo county department of emergency management vowed to address the gaps and hold drills routinely during an evacuation order. first responders advise you park your vehicle in your driveway or garage and leave your keys in the ignition. if you must, leave it on the street. emergency officials asked the public to also subscribe to their c

oakland berkeley hills 54mph. las trampas near lime ridge.ks golf course, not far from there, 47mph. travis air force base, 40. lake chabot at 38 and calaveras road 35. there were numerous that were up there. now they seem to be decreasing a little bit. santa rosa 39. i mean, there were 63, i think, at this time yesterday. so that's a decrease in the wind. and there are 40s, 50s to almost 60s on the temps. but santa rosa is running 18 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. you lose that wind petaluma 13. after that it's single digits. but tonight when the wind speeds really tail off and our temperatures are going to plunge tomorrow 19 in truckee, 21, south lake tahoe 23 in mammoth. but you can see it's large and in charge. that high. look at that cloud cover just spinning around that low which is in southern california. you can see it's actually now just south of phoenix and la. you can see it's in baja area. that is producing some cloud cover. but that's the source of the wind there. hopefully it will start to kick out as we head towards the rest

so it's kind of interesting, beautiful view from the berkeley hills looking toward the bay crystal clearvery different scene, as you well know, in southern california as a santa ana winds and dry vegetation are fueling tremendous fires. no wonder he's a flag warning still in effect, they're high fire warnings and fire weather and advisories and warnings throughout much of southern california. and this, you know, will continue these news warnings and watches will continue generally through at least wednesday. there's a lot of smoke very unhealthy. terrible particulate matter. no one wants to breathe that could cause serious health problems. the winds are out of the northeast. santa ana winds, of course, and they're pushing the winds there for away from us, heading out to sea in some cases heading toward the baja peninsula and others. so that's a concern. it is so dry in southern california after a couple of years of above average rainfall, they had some atmospheric rivers and that helped the vegetation to grow. and then when the drought hits the vegetation triples and eyes and becomes fue

yeah, here's a view from the better the berkeley hills and it's just nothing but blue skies. earlier, there were some areas of status, even some patchy fog. so heading into work. but the there's a lot of mixing in the atmosphere, dry air above dry air at the surface. and so we cleared out quite nicely in most spots, but there's a flood advisory in effect for the bay shoreline and the bay shorelines of the san pablo bay and the san francisco bay and parts of the north bay as well. that goes through about noon. the concern is not that we've had rain. it's flooding because of high tide. high tide. 8.34 this morning 6.8 feet is the high tide. high wind advisory in effect for parts of the north bay. that would be the north bay interior mountains that me the east bay hills, the eastern hills of the santas santa clara area and also the santa cruz mountains. we see 20 to 30 mile per hour offshore gusts gusting 60, 50 miles per hour in the very highest peaks. our air quality is pretty good. just about everywhere. san jose is the only spot now that showing moderate air quality and weat

i know a lot of folks around berkeley, oakland, alameda, the oakland hills as well. we're certainly feeling the strong winds this morning. right now winds out of the northeast at about 14mph. current temperature right around 50 degrees. so the winds not as strong as they were a couple hours ago. but we'll still stay breezy out there. winds right now between 10 and 20mph. but in our mountains we have much stronger winds, especially in the north bay and the north bay mountains. from time to time, we've seen winds gusting 40 to 50mph with these dry offshore winds. so this is where we have a wind advisory currently in effect for the mountains of napa county and the eastern half of sonoma county, where we could see winds upwards of 40 to 55mph throughout the day. it's just a sunny day, breezy this morning. the winds back off. later on this afternoon. we'll have full sunshine out there and temperatures going into the low 60s. let's check in with gloria and see those drive times. >> good morning to you drew. good morning to everybody at home. so we want to get started this

the winds came up overnight in the oakland hills, up around near berkeley, and it just reignited. and that's imagine this. now that was a small house kind of a fire. this is huge acreage. the perimeter of this fire, these fires. so the potential for a fire start totally exists from a preexisting ember or what have you. so that's the big concern tonight, mike. and i think that's going to continue right through. i know it's going to continue right through wednesday. here are the kind of current wind conditions, 18 mile an hour gusts out there by the eaton fire. palisades fire, about 15 mile an hour gusts those winds as often is the case. santa ana winds pick up overnight into the morning hours. so they're going to find winds up to 45, 50 miles an hour, probably 70, in some of the gaps because of the funneling, because of the venturi effect that we've talked about. so yeah, it's real time and it's real dangerous down there. and it's going to be through wednesday. i'll have the full forecast for you coming up in a few minutes. all right. >> appreciate it bill. thank you. president ele
