john berman here in miami.g right now was shown a little while ago here in miami. more than 20 frames, giant frames up in this city, a sign of the booming economy here, there's a lot of construction here. the problem is they couldn't take these cranes down in time. they had to leave them up. and the booms, those arms, looks terrifying when they move. they're designed to move. they serve like a sort of weather vain. if they tied them down, it would be like a sail and blow a whole lot over. that resistance would be dangerous. so they let them twist like that. could be a terrifying sight for people in the city of miami. building officials here in the city sent a note out saying if you live in a building near one of these cranes, you should evacuate. there is obvious concern about that, just one of the things we're watching here in miami as the wind has picked up. it is now consistently windy here. a wind of about 30 miles an hour blowing. fairly consistently. gusts a little more than that. just starting to drizzle

john berman here in miami.e're on hour 17 or so of just relentless winds and this is the fiercest they've been here by far. i'm in miami. out there, past the white fog and rain, is miami beach, which i think is getting it even worse than where i am. kyung lah is there. what are you seeing, what are you feeling? >> reporter: so i can't -- it's just getting worse and worse. we're getting much more rain now, john. you can see there's water in our lens. we've lost the ability to zoom and amy cameraman lost his ability to use the view finder. just like water is getting into our camera, water is pounding these houses all across miami beach, as the hotel we were staying, they've had to jam towels underneath all the windows and doors because they're having leakage. and that's just one small spot. you can see what the street looks like. it is completely covered in blinding rain. and, again, to put this all into perspective, this is not as bad as what going to be happening to the west. we're here trying to warn people wh

i'm john berman in miami. where hurricane irma has been pounding us for hours and hours and hours. >> all right. i'm chris cuomo in naples. we have been waiting to see what irma would do to the west coast. there are vulnerable areas here and we're starting to see it light now. reported gusts in excess of 80 miles an hour. the situation has changed here. there's now a significant debris field, and it has been hours of punishing rain. we've seen this phenomenon with hurricane irma where the energy is given and taken away. the water sha should be here on the gulf side of naples is gone, and we're waiting for it to come back in the form of storm surge and people are very worried what that will mean. the good news is, most of this place, according to the city manager, of about 19,000 normal residents, have evacuated. they believe two-thirds have done so. now, the question is, what will the rest of the people encounter? for that we go to chad myers. chad, what is the timing and what should we expect here and along t

i want to go back to cnn's john berman. there and what you're seeing now. >> reporter: all right, wolf, we took a helicopter from miami, a private helicopter from miami and tried to take the most direct line here to conserve fuel. so i did not flyover the entire keys. we did flyover a few of the islands, namely kujo key, which is over there and sugarloaf where i am. i saw most structures still intact from the air. most structures still intact but very few houses still undamaged. i saw a whole lot of boats in places where boats aren't supposed to be. often in people's yards and in streets, around and about. but i would say the structures did seem to withstand the storm. by and large from the air the structures did seem to withstand the storm. there was a campground over there, and we saw some trailers overturned. you would expect to see trailers overturned. i don't think that inself is unusual. there's an air stream on its side right there. that's the type of thing you would expect to see in a hurricane. and also some of the

it looks like down in coconut grove, john berman. i know you are in the thick of it during the 100 mile an hour winds last night. tell me about where you are today. >> reporter: it goes without saying, brooke, it's not supposed to look like this. we are outside of coconut grove outside a bar named monty's and it was just hammered in the storm. look at all of the boats around me, sail boat, motor boats, tipped over and just pushed up on to the shore by the storm surge and it wasn't just the storm surge. it was one of the larger boats that broke loose and pushed even more of the smaller boats up here, just tearing up the docks and everything in its path. just a sign of what the storm surge here could do and the winds, you know, it was category 1 here in miami north of 75 miles an hour, not even as bad as they felt in some other parts of florida. still, miami today, a long way from getting back to normal. 60% of the traffic lights are out. 800,000 people in miami-dade still without power. it's coming back on in some places, but it will

let's get to john berman. he's down in miami. even though this track has been moving around, miami is still going to get hit. they've been dealing with power outage since very early yesterday. the governor said in his most recent briefing, it will only get worse down there, and they can't say for how long. how is it now? >> 170,000 people, chris, without power in miami-dade. 170,000 people already and the storm is not at its worst. we don't expect it to be as bad as it's going to get for four, five hours now. so 170,000 down. not a good sign at these early stages. chris, i'm standing where i was last night until about 11:00 at night. you were here all day yesterday. let me tell you what's changed. the winds by and large, stronger. i'd say 20% to 30% stronger consistently and coming from a different direction. it shows you sort of how irma has been moving to the west. we're at a different point of this swirling storm. yesterday the wind was really at my face all day. now it's at my back. we're getting it from the other side right
