in bermuda.nd i tell you can the strongest part of the storm is yet to come. we have been pelted by heavy rainfalls, immense waves that keep battering the shoreline. the wave has been very strong at times. tropical storm force, hurricane-force gusts coming onshore. we pan over just a little bit. you can see just the sheer power of these pounding up against the rocks. it doesn't matter which direction you go. it truly is a sight to see. white caps as far as you can go on the horizon and of course, closer to shore, you can see all the foam. now, we do have some good news with the storm and that is not expected to make a direct hit on the island. hurricane igor is actually supposed to pass a little bit to the west and as it does so, we are still going to get caught with the brunt of the storm, northeast quadrant, northeast sector of the storm, which will bring the strongest winds, heaviest rainfall and again the pounding surf, surf expected to move well to the north of the island, pass forward into

bermuda. reynolds? >> reporter: that's right, frederica, we are getting a little bit of a break right now in terms of precipitation, you might see some rain drops across the screen at home. the biggest thing we have again b been getting is wind. although igor is quite a distance off it is a huge storm. view airs cross america, not that familiar with bermuda, bermuda consists of 138 very small islands. if you were to cram they will all together it would equal about one-third the size of igor is huge. the way the latest path looks it appears the eye will make the landfall in the far western part of bermuda or come very close. either way that happens, we should still get the full brunt of it at least the northeast quadrant of the storm, which is going to bring the strongest wind as well, heaviest rainfall and some massive waves much the waves affected this area in terms of power outages. the population of the island, about 67,000 people. half at this time without power. many of the major roads ar

we're talking about bermuda which is bracing for hurricane igor. the category one storm is expected to strike the island later today but already as you can see right there the big waves are pounding bermuda's beaches while islanders rush to board up windows and prep for the storm. let's get more details from the weather channel's jeff morrow. it's a busy time in bermuda. good morning. >> good morning, alex. yeah, they had better have those windows and doors boarded up by now because alex is on the door step. as you can see, here is the center of this hurricane igor and there is bermuda and it's not that far away. we're within about 12 hours or so of this thing passing almost directly over or very close to bermuda. now the good news here, alex, is that the winds are down to 85 miles an hour so it is a category one. it has weakened a little bit. it's going to be a long duration event here. it's such a big hurricane in coverage that it's going to take a while for these hurricane and tropical storm force winds to pass over the island. they may have tha

bermuda is going to get hard with the storm.e you don't have plans to fly into there tomorrow. good news, bermuda, you're kind of used to it. so that's the best news, too, of staying well away from the coast. although it is giving high rip current status to the eastern shore and very, very high surf. low temperatures here tonight. down into the lower 50s. maybe an upper 40 in a couple of places, reston, manassas, the rest of us upper 50s. lower to mid-80s by the afternoon. it won't be that humid, even though there's a touch here tonight. it is going to be a little bit warm for this time of the year as i explained. even the western zones are getting into the lower to mid- 80s tomorrow. out in west virginia will be 78 to 80 degrees for highs tomorrow. upper elevations of the appalachians will be in the mid- 70s. 80s, washington, eastern shore, even upper 70s in some cases. eastern shore beaches on the atlanta particular, we have the -- atlantic, high rip current. >>> mild to start off the work week. fall begins the equinox will fe

he's live in elbow beach, bermuda.you look at the track of that storm, the worst of the wind and waves looks like it hit the southern part of the island, which is where a lot of the resorts are. >> reporter: including elbow beach, which is directly behind me which caught hell yesterday afternoon and during the evening hours and overnight. we've been following this system. this tropical system since back on september 8th. and the cnn weather alert team has seen this fluctuate in power from a minimal hurricane to a major hurricane. and within hours of it coming close to the island, part of the eye wall itself collapsed. and that caused the storm to be fairly weak. only category one as you mentioned. just west of this point. but still, we're in that northeast quadrant and that is the thing that helped bring in some of the heavy rainfall. the relentless wind and that pounding surf. we've got video to share with you and the rest of america that basically tells the story. the effects of that water coming onshore caused flood

the huge storm is battering bermuda.t now. jacqui jeras tracking igor at the cnn hurricane headquarters and reynolds wolf getting benched at elbow beach in bermuda. let's go to reynolds first. reynolds? >> reporter: well, don, the latest we've got is basically more of the same. we've had some gusts that have been very strong. i've got to tell you when it comes to the storm, although it is a category 1, although it's going to be in a dying state over the next 12 to 24 hours, the biggest danger this has posed for the region has not been just the strength of the winds but rather the direction of the storm, how long it's been coming, how long is the island been subjected to hurricane gusts and tropical storm force winds. and the problem is it's not going to just fade as the storm passes north, but rather it's going to continue. some of the tropical storm force winds, we could see further power outages as we make our way into monday, perhaps even into tuesday, and i'll tell you. last time when this -- when an event like this

bermuda's a small place made up of 138 islands.lectively if you were to put those land masses together, it would still be a third of the size of washington, d.c. this area is part of the uk, home to some 67,000 people. people who were preparing for this storm. and as it's been getting closer, we've been seeing it flex its muscles. well, we had some video we were going to show you moments ago. that is basically the first impressions we're seeing from the storm, t.j. the way bermuda is set up. it's a giant coral formation. outside this coral we have had waves up to 19 feet. they've been a little bit smaller. as the storm surge comes on as the storm approaches, they could be anywhere from 5 to 7 feet in storm surge, but the high tide could be topping some of the walls at this particular resort. this storm is very similar in terms of the size or at least in terms of the power as the storm that struck this area back in 2003. that storm was fabian, it knocked out the airport, caused millions of dollars in cost, four lives. four people tr

we could be looking at the land fall in bermuda.to happen late tomorrow night or early monday morning. it's when the worst of the conditions begin. we have gone down to a category 2 storm. it's not that much weaker than a weak category 3. you need to take it seriously. it will eventually curve up to the north. you might say, do we care here in the united states or do we need to be concerned with igor? you do. up and down the east coast, we have the high risk of rip currents. the same thing we had with earl and danielle. we are going to have rough waves particularly along the carolina beaches. be aware of that. let's talk about the wave. karl made land fall and fizzled out over the land here. maybe some of the moisture might have gotten caught up in the trough as we call it. it's a cluster of thunderstorms as we call it. it's close to land. there's not a lot of time to develop into a tropical system. it's going to bring in a tremendous amount of rainfall in texas and the coastal areas in particular. we have risk of rip currents in th

igor is expected to strike per maude later today -- bermuda later today. more details now from the weather channel's jeff morrow. good morning to you. what's it looking like? >>> all right. i decided to give you a big visual satellite picture of what you would see, say, if you were up in the space station looking right down on it. there's bermuda, that little black dot in the middle of the yellow circle here. and there's the center of igor, just to the south of it, and it's going to be moving right by bermuda here as we head through the next 12 to 14 hours or so. and it's probably going to give bermuda -- you're already seeing tropical storm-force winds there. it's probably going to have at least tropical storm-force winds if not hurricane-force winds for the next 18 to 24 hours. that kind of wind for that prolonged period of time is probably going to cause some damage on the island. maximum sustained winds right now, category 1 strength. that's the good news. the whole hurricane has weakened. but it's such a big hurricane in size that it will be pummellin

the target is bermuda. it will go ore the top of the island. you can see where the island is in the middle, and all the lines show you the path of the storm, the center of it. the worst for bermuda would be if it was in the right front quadrant, the strongest side of the storm. karl is pretty much gone and done. it did take two lives and made landfall ten miles north of vera cruz. thank goodness that the tropics are quiet after igor. we see one more wave coming off the coast of africa, and we'll see that in a week. all eyes on bermuda this weekend. >>> it is a growing question for the republican party. does the rising tide of conservative activists provide opportunities or a potential threat? fault lines on display in iowa as sarah palin issued a warning to the establishment. >> we can't blow it, gop, but we won't wait for that political playbook to be handed us from on high from the elite. it may take some renegades going rogue to get us there. it may take folks shaking us up, shaking it up to get there. >> so will the emerging split help demo

so this storm still very much so a big problem for bermuda. at home we'll see this frontal system push through overnight, partly cloudy skies and then for tomorrow some patchy morning fog. be prepared for that. ridge of high pressure to the west. as far as tonight is concerned, though, areas along the allegheny front, mason dixon line, we're talking about a little shower activity possible with the passage of that frontal system, very isolated and as we have move through to the later part of the week, we'll also end up seeing an upper level disturbance and that will set us up for some much needed rainfall. in the meantime tomorrow we won't be too bad at all, sun and clouds, by midday around 75 degrees and we are talking tonight once again about just seeing partly cloudy conditions with mostly the clouds starting to wane their way out in the overnight hours, 63 degrees for our overnight low and for tomorrow plenty of sunshine, not bad at all at 80 degrees. here's a look at our five-day forecast for you. that ump level disturbance looking at brin

if you take a close-up look, there's bermuda.n see the center of the storm passing to the west of it crawling to the northwest of bermuda so while the center of the storm did not cross the island, they got a lot of strong south-southeasterly winds coming to the south side of that island as the center of the storm passed west and is pulling away. not a direct hit but a strong impact from a category one hurricane. it is now sitting 40 miles from hamilton in bermuda with 75 mile-an-hour winds and should continue to race to the northeast and slowly weaken, staying safely away from our region but on the coast, dangerous rip currents. cincinnati and breezy tomorrow -- cincinnati -- 78 and breeze tomorrow. slight chance for a thunderstorm late wednesday as it starts to heat up and a better chance for scattered storms on thursday. >>

this is in bermuda, southampton, bermuda, from one of our i-reporters.strong waves already slamming bermuda's southern coast. real concerns about serious storm surge and coastal flooding from the high surf. another i-reporter has more from nearby devonshire bay. >> we're about 24 hours away from the beginning of tropical storm winds from hurricane igor. there's a number of bermudans out on the south shore, where we are, watching the waves come in as the preceding surf from the hurricane gets bigger and bigger. it is absolutely mad. the houses on the water, i'd be afraid to be in one, to be completely honest, during this storm. it is huge. >> let me bring in karen mcginnis here now. it is always a little deceiving. have to be a little cautious when we say something's been downgraded. oh, things must be fine. not really the case. this is a big sucker here. >> this is a huge hurricane. we've got julia also sitting out there, and julia is this little tiny storm that's now moving to the north, and we're not even concerned about it. but igor is so massive. and

that center line goes right over the top of bermuda.there is an eye over the top of the storm, the eye will go right over the island. monday. this will be a sunday night event. that's when the crazy pictures and everything else will come out late in the evening. as far as the computers go, it is set in stone. there's not a lot that will change with this storm. all these lines almost go right through bermuda or just barely to the left. even if it was to the left, that means we'll still get the worst of the storm on the right. that's always the case. if you're on the right side of the storm when it makes landfall, that's the worst case. that's what the computers are saying. it will take days to a week before we get all the exact details out of there. we have our weather crews there, we'll get the first information right here. >> kind of scary to know what's coming on shore. people are getting stocked up. >> this is a long time. five days ago we said it was heading for=bqw bermuda. it hasn't changed. >> i hope they're bearing down. thanks

here in bermuda, we're feeling the effects of the storm. believe we've been following this hurricane since september 8th off the coast of africa. it's getting close to bermuda, and outer bands, strongest winds, heaviest waves are on the doorstep of the island. ashwood cove, bermuda is getting hit storm by igor. and the strongest of the storm is yet to come. heavy rainfall and immense waves keep battering the shoreline. the wind has been very strong at time. tropical storm force with hurricane force gusts. we pan over just a little bit. and you can see the sheer pow every of these things pounding against the rocks. doesn't matter which direction you go, it's a sight to see. white caps as far as you can go in the horizon and closer to shore, you see all of the foam. understandably, the city of hamilton is a ghost town. take a look at the video you can see the streets fairly empty, save a few people and a motorcycle here and there. few cars on the street. just a few sightseers, many of them have returned home, understandably so, and 6,000 of t

the bad news is igor is headed right here to bermuda. thes downgra cay still yesterday when this was a powerful hurricane, the premier issued a dire warning for the island. strong winds and waves and with the eye still a half day from what could be a direct hit on bermuda. as the storm was gathering, many of the 65,000 residents here took a look worried about what is going to slam their shores. >> that's what's scary, yeah, i've been here 45 years. i've seen some hurricanes. i think this one -- i don't know. i feel very, very nervous about this. >> reporter: so is the government of this british territory, which covers all of 21 square miles in the middle of the atlantic. >> today we stand on the eve of the arrival of one of the worst hurricanes to ever threaten our shores. >> reporter: why three hurricanes in the same week? experts say it's not climate change but a pattern that brings warm weather to the atlantic fueling all these fierce storms. >> the increased hurricane activity could definitely be considered a new normal over the next

hurricane igor is on track for bermuda, creating high winds and rough surf. to get ready, locals are gathering supplies and boarding up homes while vacationers are trying to leave before the storm hits some time on sunday. igor's forecasted path forced royal caribbean to change the destination for enchantment of the seas that departs from baltimore. it is now heading to the bahamas. b.p.'s blown-out well in the gulf of mexico could be hours away from being permanently sealed, that is the word from the gulf tonight. one final test and then they start cementing, killing that well for good. >> 152 days in and b.p. engineers say it's still going to take a few more hours before the fractured deep water horizon well is officially closed forever. 74 barrels of cement have been pumped in and set. strsts are working -- scientists are working through another test, applying 15,000 pounds of pressure to the seal to make sure it holds. on the surface, no test is needed. the pressure is definitely growing. >> why couldn't they do something before it got here. >> anger fuel

, rick leventhal streaming live from hamilton, bermuda.k, what does it look like now? >> reporter: eric we are a few hours away from the tropical storm force winds that will precede the hurricane force winds. the good news now from the national hurricane center is that the storm has weakened a little bit. it is down to 100 mile per hour winds. the hurricane center says we should still expect a dangerous storm surge. significant coastal flooding. possibly six to nine inches of rain on the island. and large and destructive waves especially along the southern coast. that's where we plan to ride out this storm. a lot of folks are taking this serious as you can see video of people boarding up businesses and homes. front street in hamilton, where most of the stores and restaurants and bars are in the main center of bermuda, many of those have been boarded up. the streets are starting to clear out the people who are still out, many of them are going to the stores for one last grocery run or hardware store run. they've sold out of a lot of essenti

right there is bermuda so the line goes to the west of bermuda and the worst side of it. worst probably of the wind as well. since the winds are now sustained at 85, that's certainly good news. but a storm of this size is going to be a long duration storm and that's what's really going to do damage, the beaches and potentially the homes and trees and power lines and such. that right there is igor, that's julia, that was a cat 4 storm earlier this week and you see right there on the far end of the screen, that's probably our next storm by tonight or by tomorrow, and that would be lisa, which would be the next name, the 12th storm of the year. so, lots going on in the tropics and lots in the areas of u.s. and texas, tropical moisture, the broader energy of what brought hurricane earl into mexico and bringing some very heavy tropical moisture into the sound end of texas and causing some flooding. yesterday, some areas how three inches and the day before that three inches and we saw that again across areas of texas and flooding concerns, severe weather cutting across the nort
