they spent nine months in bermuda, and when they came, they brought bermuda sea shells. like the scallop. that is quite large. clean conch shell here. another beautiful shell. they are collecting them like we would, as souvenirs of their voyage, but also if they get back to england, they can sell these two gentlemen who are collecting exotic objects from around the world. and speaking of exotic objects, in this bottle here, which probably held pharmaceuticals, medicinal substances, we actually found beetles. we had them analyze, and i actually have them in here. if you can see them. um, and they are strawberry root beetles. the first documented evidence of this beetle in the new world. we had other soil samples tested. we have located bed bugs. and powder post beetles. we know there were black rats brought in. all of these hitchhikers that the colonists were not bringing on purpose. we have the evidence of indian women in this time period being in the fort. and this is a needle made from the rib of a deer. if you look closely, it is decorated here. and these are the type

we also find quite a bit of limestone from bermuda that was used in the ships from bermuda as ballast. it was used architecturally once it arrived at the island. and oyster shell is another commonly found material at jamestown. they ate these oysters and subsequently used them to produce lyme for mortar and plaster. let's go on into our processing laboratory, our dry processing laboratory. here, i am sorting artifacts from the john smith well. these few ceramic shards are from one of the upper layers of the well. john smith in 1608 ordered the colonists to dig a well and in 1610, it was filled in as the colonists left jamestown. they had hoped to go back to england but they were met by a longboat in the chesapeake bay and ordered to turn around. the longboat belonged to lord delaware and announced his arrival. all the colonists came back and reoccupied james for. these ceramics were made in the period from about 1619 until about 1625. they were made by james ward. his kiln site was found here in the 1950's on the national park service property. these are some of his products. i am try

that little speck is bermuda. so south and west of bermuda. that system right now, the three i showed you, look at how the national hurricane center thinks this is going to progress. this would be a tropical storm off the shores on saturday. so it's something that you have to keep an eye on. again, when i would work with max mayfield at the national hurricane center he said never focus on the skinny red line. look at the entire possible area, which is this cone of concern. we are securely in it. the red line shows you possibly the highest probability. but anywhere in this shaded area has a chance. so it's important that we watch this one. i will do just that. i will update you as it comes in here. two updates. three, even four updates as it gets closer. i will watch this for you very carefully. we are all on the same team. 79 degrees tomorrow. i want you to grab an umbrella. i don't think it's the wet weather day, but it will increase as you go through your day. keep that umbrella with you for the whole week. every day there is a rain chance.

tropical depression 11 has formed south of bermuda with winds of 35 miles per hour. it's in its infancy stages but this storm is anticipated to develop to the next tropical storm. the reason why we're rr watch watching it close. is is wednesday's track at 2:00 in the afternoon. it's already expected to strengthen by tomorrow night to that tropical storm status. and then it moves up towards the mid-atlantic coast. this is on friday afternoon at 00 p.m. if it stays on track and it stays with the strength, it is headed in our direction on saturday afternoon. now, it could be a tropical storm at this point. it's still early in the game and we'll watch it carefully for you. if this moves in over the weekend, we're going to talk about a lot of heavy rain for our area. and this is probably what's going to end all of this rainfall deficit that we've seen over the last several months. usually takes a storm like this, unfortunately. these are the depa ures from average in terms of rainfall since the beginning of the year. anywhere from six to nine inches below average in terms

and then we have tropical depression 11, which is formed southwest of bermuda. we haven't seen much action on the east coast this season because of el nino. this storm is expected to become the next tropical storm, which is named joaquin. as it progresses north and west and then towards the north, it will start to curve in our direction by friday afternoon off the coast of cape hatteras. could possibly make landfall along the mid-atlantic coast. in any event, if it stays on this track t will be here by saturday afternoon with a lot of wind and rain. we'll keep it tracking it for you with the latest updates as they come in. for the rest of this evening, not much going on except a lot of clouds. there could be a shower possible here and there and tomorrow thunderstorms in the area. very spotty, though, across the region. most of the heavy rain we're ex exing ex expecting tomorrow night into wednesday. temperatures 60s the rest of the week and then keep an eye out for the weekend when we could see a tropical system head our way. >> we need the rain. >> we do need t
