we had a reliable vacuum tube computer out in bermuda that helped us doing some of the trajectory stuff. our communications was low-speed teletype that dated back to the days of america's pony express. basically we had 13 tracking stations around the world and we sent young people just like yourselves into these sites that were literally at the ends of the earth and the risks were very high for these young people because this was the end of the european colonial period, we had controllers twice rescued by the army. in zanzibar, they worked under the protection and they would move the controllers out to the site for everyone to track and then move them back to the zanz bar hotel and station gunners at both ends. it became so violent at that site that we shut it down after only three years. but these young people were our eyes, ears and basically the voice as the spacecraft passed overhead. and those that stayed in the business flight operations became the leaders for project apollo. we had many near misses during the gemini program. when gus grisham hit the water and the hatch popped up

looking at carefully and you notice across portions of the gulf into the western atlantic, areas around bermudaof tropical systems to tell you about. grace in particular, one that we're watching because of course impacts across haiti and the island of hispaniola, this is a system that had begun breaking apart a little bit, down to a tropical depression, and a lot of it has to do with interaction across a very rugged terrain in this region. mountains here rise to as high as 10,100 feet, higher than 37 u.s. states. so it often breaks systems apart. but unfortunately, at the expense of haiti and dominican republic and with it, as much as 4 to 6 inches of rainfall widespread. and a tremendous amount of deforestation in this region. so a lot of this will lead to flash flooding, potentially additional landslides. we know the search and rescue operations won't be helped with this storm. but look at the model consensus moving forward. we expect the system to quickly pull away come tuesday morning, potentially end up somewhere south of cuba, maybe make landfall in mexico and then early next week it coul

this is the image of the life of henri, started way to the east of bermuda, went to the south and thenurled way back up, very atypical trajectory for a storm like this. we had massive storms yesterday and overnight across parts of tennessee.e. we're going to be covering not associated with this tropical storm or hurricane but it appears at this point over a dozen fatalities so a sto that is not getting much attention, we're going to talk about. get back to henri here. center of the storm made landfall on the border of connecticut and into rhode island. you notice all of the moisture is towards the west of this storm, the left side. a lot of times in tropical systems we see most of the moisture on the right side. not the case, this storm is starting to transition from a hurricane, tropical system, a warm center storm to a traditional storm you get across parts of the northeast, that means we're seeing the energy field expand out. we'll see the wind expand out. that's why we'll see a lot of place there's the 40 plus mile an hour wind range. we've got tropical storm warnings in effect the

approaching the southeastern united states, another system well out there across the western atlantic near bermuda thank the tremendous amount of mountain coverage across this region from africa on into the island of hispaniola, mountains across the island there rise to as high as 10,000 feet. you look at some 37 states across the u.s. mountains do not rise as high as you'll find here across portions of haiti and the dominican republic. so again speaks to the rugged nature of this landscape, but that also plays a role in weakening tropical systems. unfortunately, this go-around, that's the last thing we want to see because that means the tremendous amount of rainfall is coming down across the island as the system moves overhead and the models do bring it directly over this region, potentially bringing in as much as maybe six to eight inches widespread across the western half of the island and some isolated totals could exceed ten-plus inches. this is an incredible amount of rainfall that could move in as early as monday night and move through by tuesday morning and tuesday afternoon as we have sea

now, i've been watching this storm system since tuesday as it formed across bermuda.as a significant change. and it has been pretty erratic the whole time. and so that's exactly what we are seeing. the now, the biggest concern for the next few hours, yes, is that landfall that we are going to see in connecticut or rhode island. so that's still up in the air. but this tough weather across the northeast into long island, it's going to remain for at least the next five hours. so we are not out of this storm just yet. maria, losing ifb but i hope you got all of it. >> hold on tight with the waves behind you. kathy, how are people preparing in rhode island? >> hey, maria. we just got to this scene. as you can see, we're being slammed by heavy bands of rain, strong winds. i'm not sure if you can see behind me, but the waves are just relentless. right behind me is ocean road. and we have seen several police vehicles blocking the entrances to the roadways. obviously this is a very dangerous situation. we don't want people out on the roadways. and that is something that offici
