i used to live on the north slope of bernal and used to drive around the hill and stuff. a little bit familiar but it's been a number of years. but i do remember the neighborhood as having very narrow streets and actually kind of liked it that way. president olague: commissioner moore? commissioner moore: i would like to suggest we take discuss and review. there's potentially a split here, one way is not approve this project. very simple. another one is to spell out specifically what the preconditions are for redesigning this project, because many of the -- many of the basic assumptions for this project are not defendable. the most important one to me is starting with the engineering, the civil engineering and accurate information beyond wors and architects know how to do that, which tells us that the grades, cuts molding of retaining walls work with street safety, pedestrian safety and drainage requirements, three important civil issues, which all will be altered by cutting back the retaining wall. the next one is not just like small-size cars but whatever fits into this

hearkens back to a time of old bernal heights. an anonymous complaint led to the discovery that the historic sign was out of compliance with local laws because it had uncovered for about 35 years. when the story first broke, we heard a number of perspectives on this issue. some people raise concerns about the potential health message that it would send children to have a coca-cola sign, especially being in front of a school. others voiced a very strong desire to preserve the sign as an historic treasure. since the story broke a few weeks ago, my office has received a number of calls, a number of e-mails from residents throughout bernal heights. we have also taken the time to check with parents at the paul revere elementary school where the sign is across the street from it. overwhelmingly, the response has been supportive of preserving the sign. i am looking at the issue, we have learned how complicated and complex it is to actually protect a sign of this nature, how difficult it is procedurally to establish an historic signing di

i live in bernal heights. i am a homeowner. we have had some success with community policing.hought i would tell you what that looked like. i think the comments people have made about the constant memory go round of captains is really important. we have had for captains in our district in a few short years. it has very completely with the captain. it has not seem like something that came from the city would priority. it was really the training of the individual captain. i do not think that is the kind of program -- i think we can do better with that. relationships in the community -- you cannot have those relationships. it is the captain as well as other senior officers. it is different in every -- it has to be a different model in every district. there is different factors in different neighborhoods. we have a very active neighborhood center with a number of programs that work with at-risk communities. having a community policing program their means working with those kinds of organizations that actually have the kinds of relationships and resources, and maybe case management

i am part of the bernal heights program. i am here to tell you about the after-school program and what it does for the youth. we go to school. what do we have to do after? we can go walk around. we have after-school programs with things we enjoy. they have activities. we are building our knowledge outside of school. it also ties in with violence. that is something we do not want to have a lot of in the city. this is our community. after-school programs kind of cuts it down. think about it, if we do not have after-school programs, where are we going to go? we need things that make us happy. we go to school. we work hard. we want fun things to do after. how about if we need help after? it is a place we feel safe at. why would we get rid of something that helps and builds our community? thank you. i was raised in bernal heights and attended st. paul's high school. i attended san francisco state university's school of nursing and i currently live in the mission district. my history with st. luke's began long before i worked there. when i was 8 years old my mother had surgery and i remember climbing up the building stairs which are now closed becauser in not a.d.a. accessible. my three children were born at st. lukes and they have served as volunteers over the years at the hospital. i began my career as a staff nurse in the surgical unit on the ninth floor. i worked the knight shift and i remember the many aftershocks where all the nurses and i were afraid when the building swayed from side to side. we were afraid that we would have to evacuate the patients in fear that we could not get them all out in time. since 1995 i worked as a certified diabetes educator and because of the prevalence of diabetes in our surrotundaing neighborhoods is very high, especially in the latino and african american community, many of our patients have socioeconomic i
