cbs news hurricane consultant david bernard is in miami tracking tropical storm lee. what's the latest? >> reporter: russ, the tropical storm is moving very slow along the louisiana coastline, it's fairly strong with 60 mile per hour winds. the big story with this, not only this weekend, but next week, is going to be the rainfall, not just on the gulf coast, but all the way across the archlaish ans into the northeast, we could be looking at 4 to 6 inches of rain and that would be in places that saw heavy rain from irene. >> mitchell: let's talk about hurricane katia now in the atlantic. how close is that storm expected to get to the east coast? >> reporter: that's a really good question and it's one we don't have answers for at this time. the latest this afternoon puts the storm at 70 miles per hour, so it's just below hurricane strength, it's moving to the west northwest at 10, and when we look at the future track going out the next five days, once we get to wednesday and thursday of next week, it's going to be getting closer to the united states east coast, but we'r

meteorologist bernard joining us now. a muggy end to this weekend. >> it was a hot weekend, we did have mugginess along with thunderstorm activity the last few nights, a slight chance of some activity this evening, thunderstorms out of the high country, the sierra, moving from east to west back towards the bay will be partly can cloudy skies and that slight chance of thunderstorms tonight with temperatures in the mid-to upper oohs for most locations overnight. taking a look at our high definition doppler we see that thunderstorm development is weakening this evening, so the returns are showing up around lake tahoe, so far it hasn't entered the central valley and looks like it won't be making that trek towards the west this evening but we'll keep an eye on it here and update you at 10:00 on what's goin' on with that development as most of it has been to our south. thankfully the last few days we have had some moisture with this thunderstorm development so dry lightning on friday started a bunch of fires. heavy rain associa

meteorologist jim bernard is here with the details. jim. >> didn't take long, did it? after last week's warm temperatures and sunshine prevailing across the region, we take a turn back to the cool and wet. as we see a chance of showers creeping into the forecast for tomorrow, a cool and foggy night. chance of rain is on the way through tomorrow morning mainly in the north bay now as we take a lock at the future cast rain fall expectation. you see the rain creeping from the north to the south and dispating across the mid bay sections with generally less than a quarter of an inch of rain appearing in the north bay. just across the central bay here by tomorrow afternoon as once again, it will be more clouds than rain for us, but nonetheless, it is an early start to our rain season right on cue here as fall officially started yesterday. >> all right, jim thank you very much. >>> well, a sunnyvail mother of an 8 month old is in custody tonight accused of killing her baby. police were called to an apartment yesterday where they found the boy. a short time later, the mother w

. >>> meteorologist jim bernard joining us, getting off to a new week, how is it looking weather-wise we're looking at a break in the thunderstorm activity across california through the day tomorrow, we saw a few build ups out over the east bay hills there tonight, but that's all moving on now. we look for partly cloudy skies this eveningsh coming patchy in the morning and giving way to mostly clear through the day as once again we see a slight warm up begin tomorrow and continue through mid-week across the bay. today's highs looked like this today as we saw significant cooling across the interior, 7 to 10 degrees with a 67 in santa rosa, 78 in fairfield, livermore 81, actually warmed autopsy few degrees, around the bay it as we saw mid-to low 70s prevail for mostly bayside locations with muggy conditions prevailing as well. again, the weather-maker that's been parked off the southern california coast brought thunderstorms throughout southern california, now moving up into the northwest corner of the state. that is be depending to move and it should clear the state by tomorrow taking
