bernard smith joins us from istanbul. just in case we forget, of course, there is a continuing flow of people crossing over for the most part from turkey, the turkish mainland and then trying to get to the greek islands. >> yes, those new borders controls don't seem to have impact. this boat this afternoon we think sank, capsized was 20 meters long. and it is wooden boat, often used for tours outside the coastal waters and normally don't have more than 100 people or so in them. this seems to have been packed with 233 refugees. 22 of them drowned, amongst them 11 women and four children. the turkish coast guard rescued 211 of them just at dawn this morning. it's quite unusual to have to say that this sort of boat was being used to make that short crossing from turkey to kos. most of the summer, we've seen rubber dingies. these big wooden boats haven't really been used this summer, an indication that there is still a large number of people trying to get across. >> are there growing demands there because of the rising casual

rescued 400 people in the agean sea, there are stories of survival, and death and despair >>> bernard smith joins me from the place where the picture emerged of the baby, dead on the beach. that seems to be devastating everyone. what have you found about him and his family? >> yes, that's around the corner from where i'm standing now. his mother and 5-year-old brother drowned. they were passengers on one of two boats that sailed out on tuesday night. the kos which is over my right shoulder, visible in the distance. 18 people drowned out of those two boats, and, in fact, today at the moment the turkish coast guard, differs and helicopter are still out looking for bodies. but that is not dissuading syrians who are gathering along the coastline in the major cities along the coast, to make the sailing over to europe, the greek islands further into europe. that particular one, the father has survived and is treated in hospital. they are from the syrian city, which we heard a lot about left year, where the fighters propels an attack. how have people been responding manufacture how is turkey respo

well, bernard smith sent us this update from turkey. >> for the last month or so the u.s.ary and coalition allies have been able to launch air strikes on i.s.i.l. targets in syria from this air base behind me in southeastern turkey and it has been a game changer for the u.s. military and means the border with syria is 120 kilometers away from here, much shorter flight than the four hour flight they had to make from the gulf before they allowed them to be used for those air strikes but for the air strikes to be there they rely on intelligence on the ground and worked with kurdish forces before but there are now suggestions the u.s. military is thinking of training up more fighters trained by the u.s. military who will enter syria and work alongside of the different rebel groups, different fighting groups in syria and working with those groups, those fighters especially trained by the u.s. military will target, will identify targets for those air strikes that will then be called in by the u.s. military, that way the u.s. hopes the air strikes will be much more effective and

now to bernard smith, joining us on the phone. what else do we know at this stage? >> the p.k.k. have claimed responsibility for this. there is no official confirmation of the number of soldiers killed. the p.k.k. says it's 15. they said they ambushed vehicles, two armoured vehicles carrying soldiers out on patrol. the government has said that the vehicles were hit by land mines detonated by the p.k.k. fighters. there are reports as well that turkish jets, military jets, retaliated, hitting a number of p.k.k. targets in the area where the attack took place, which is close to the turkish border with iraq and iran. this is certainly, perhaps, one of the attacks on the turkish security forces since the ceasefire - 2.5 ceasefire collapse in july. already 70 members of security forces have been killed and hundreds of p.k.k. fighters killed since then. >> joining me on the phone from turkey. to discuss this further, we'll talk with a turkey analyst from chit ham house. we have seen another attack. what does it tell us about the situation? >> basically the ceasefire between the turkish

bernard smith reports. >> reporter: in the 12 months since air strikes over syria began, the u.s.00 square kilometers of territory has been taken back from the islamic state of iraq and the levant. central command gives the credit to what it calls anti-isil fighters, including syrian kurds and sunni arabs. but they wouldn't have been as successful without air power to back them up. and over the last month, the u.s. has been able to intensify its campaign, after squeezing permission from turkey to use its base. the border with syria is just about 120 kilometers from the air base behind me. that means more sources and more air strikes than when the u.s. and its coalition allies were forced to fly up to four hours away from bases in the gulf, but to make those air strikes as effective as possible, the u.s. needs more and better intelligence from individuals on the ground who can identify targets to be hit. so the obama administration says it is looking at the option of sending american-trained fighters into syria to help direct the air strikes. they might be attached to groups around
