in new hampshire where bernie sanders beat hillary clinton by a lot, there are a lot of bernie sanders voters going to events and listening to other candidates. >> no question. that's how this works. the challenge for bernie sanders is, yes, he has true believers i. suspect he'll always have the true believers. the reality is people looking for an alternative have so many options. the question for bernie sanders is does he have a second act? is he able to convince some of his old supporters to stay in and also show that he can evolve. one advantage is he's run before. that's a huge advantage for a presidential candidate who has been through the wringer and all of this before. this will be so much different for him. i'm looking to see how he's able to expand his argument. is he going to define himself against these individual democratic candidates? it's a sense of ego here as well for bernie sanders. he liked what he did four years ago. he had a strong showing four years ago particularly here. it depends. he's also seen by some democrats as a spoiler. if you talk to democrats in michiga

it's hard to mention who the voter is at this point for bernie sanders other than we know what the bernie sanders voter has been, somebody a bit younger, whiter, i think, than the overall democratic primary process usually is in those voter groups. it's hard to see what sort of lane in terms of building some sort of multiracial coalition. it is interesting. he clearly is mindful of that. he has moved the party left on any number of issues, medicare for all and college tuition. he himself has been moved left on issues of race by himself. very uncomfortable in many ways talking about race in 2016, some uncomfortable interactions with a black lives matter protesters. you see in that video he mentioned racial equality. that is something we will hear quite a bit from him. he calls the president a racist. not every candidate has done that so far. we'll see how that plays. it will still be difficult for him to expand that core group of supporters, primarily younger voters as well as white voters as well and male voters. we will see. it will be an interesting voice in this very very crowded field

bernie sanders jumping in to this race. there were some questions about whether or not he was going to do it. there were reports of him having meals with elizabeth warren as they both talked about what their plans were going to be. and i think the question is does he have that same energy this time around that he showed in 2016, or is that energy now spread out among too many other potential choices for democratic voters? i think when you talk to people who are working on some of these other campaigns, they're looking at bernie sanders and elizabeth warren and saying the two of them are going to cannibalize each other, essentially. they're both trying to appeal to the same set of voters and that's going to clear out some lanes for other candidates to find a path. now, bernie sanders is somebody who really kind of rose on the strength of his own personal authenticity. it's really clear, and i know you know this from having covered the republican side in 2016 as well. that's what voters are looking for. bernie sanders resonat
