this is the key for bernie sanders like donald trump, he needs new voters to turn out. if you've never voted in a iowa caucus before but a likely democratic voter, 51% for sanders. if you've done this before and you're a democrat, 51% for clinton. 42% for sanders. sanders needs to turn out voters on caucus night. let's move onto the race in new hampshire. sanders with an edge 50 to 46% a tie within the margin of error close race there. let's break it down. just like in iowa, hillary clinton wins among those who say i'm a democrat. bernie sanders wins by a sizable number by those who say i'm an independe independent. sanders has a slight edge, good edge in new hampshire and sanders with a slight edge among those who say they are moderate. you'll have more of a split in sanders' favor in the state of new hampshire and again, significant sanders wins just like he did in iowa significantly among men but the gender gap not as much in clinton's favor among women in new hampshire. that's why this race is so close and why sanders has the slightest of edge. hillary clinton not as

21st century by monday. >> byron, expectations are one thing but if you do have the oddity of bernie sanders winning iowa, you do have the oddity of donald trump, he wins iowa, tell me where this race goes. >> reporter: well, it goes to new hampshire where those two men, sanders and trump, have significant leads in new hampshire. and so you have to think that a trump victory here in iowa would really lead to increased momentum and he's up well into the double digits in new hampshire. so is bernie sanders. so i do think it changes the dynamic of the race. in the democratic side, on the democratic side, hillary clinton has always been saying just wait a minute, wait until we get to south carolina, wait until we get to the sec states where african-american democrats start voting because they are such a huge and critical part of the democratic coalition. but on the republican side, you win iowa, you win new hampshire, just try to find somebody who's done both of those things and not gone on and won the nomination. >> good stuff. byron york, thank you very much, in des moines. >> thank you. >>> t

you have young people seemingly more enthusiastic about bernie sanders than clinton. among voters under 50. he's also leading there among women. how do you turn that around? >> poppy, one of the things that we attempt to do, which i think is unfair to bernie sanders, but it's just outright incorrect, i'm going to say this throughout the night, bernie sanders is not barack obama. that's the fact of the matter. i was the co-shachair of break' steering committee for south carolina. the energy we felt there is unlike anything we'll feel again. 2008, even the president couldn't replicate that in 2012, i think he would tell you that. so let's not call it that, because that's not what he is. bernie sanders is running a hell of a campaign. he's running a campaign that other people -- if i would have told you this a year ago, i would have been lying, but he's doing an amazing job. but he still has to come to south carolina, he still has to win iowa. hillary clinton understands that bernie sanders has to win both of those states. he can't slip up. i believe hillary clinton will

so that leads bernie sanders to tell me, it's not a negative ad.hat is your impression of this ad? >> i think every independent person has been watching that, including journalists and writers know it's a negative ad and an attack ad. he's used personal attacks and doing it through innuendo but i think everybody watching and paying attention to this, caucus goers are doing know exactly how negative this ad is. >> in watching hillary and bill clinton campaigning, it seems she is taking the sort of softer role and bill clinton is in charge of the attack lines. is that the way you've assigned the jobs for the two clintons out here in the closing days? >> hillary clinton has been out here making a forceful argument for his campaign and drawing a clear contrast. she's very strongly making the argument that people want a president who will produce real results to make a difference in their lives now. not wait for things that may sound good on paper. but will either never happen or simply don't add up. that's been the critique of senator sanders' plans in
