that's a significant lead for bernie sanders right now over hillary clinton. it's just changed. take a look at this. 56% of the vote is in. all of a sudden it got a whole lot closer, 49.9% for bernie sanders, 48.3% of hillary clinton, that's only a difference of 9,003 votes. all of a sudden it got very, very close. 1 1/2 points down from 5 points. what are you hearing from the bernie sanders folks in johnson if they've got this latest number, 56% of the vote is in and it's all of a sudden gotten a whole lot closer. >> reporter: wolf, they've been watching this from the beginning, even when it was just 2% reporting and bernie sanders had a lead. what one aide said to me was, well, it's nice to be in the lead even if it just for a little while. so that really reflect what is they were thinking, that ultimately this would tighten and hillary clinton would win here. so if bernie sanders is to win michigan, if this lead even as it's tightening manages to hold, i think bernie sanders might be one of the most surprised people and those around him will be some of the most surprised peopl

hillary clinton and bernie sanders go ahead to head right here on cnn. hillary clinton comes in with the significant lead over bernie sanders in the critical delegate count. sanders riding high on the morale. and they will step up on the stage tonight just as caucuses close in maine. which candidate can harness the momentum today. first we have to begin with some very sad breaking news. the death of the former first lady of the united states, nancy reagan. wife of the 40th president of the united states. she passed away today of congestive heart failure at age 94. tributes to mrs. reagan are pouring in across the country and around the world. anderson cooper is here with me. he knew the former first lady personally. anderson, you knew her thanks to your mom. >> i did. i grew up knowing nancy reagan. my mom and her became very close friends when she was first lady. and she used to stay at our house in new york when she wanted to get away from washington. and over the years we kept in touch. i saw her in, i took her to lunch in los angeles not too long ago.

western saturday caucuses in washington state, with 13% of the delegate vote in, bernie sanders up with 33.3% to hillary clinton's 26.4%. and now let's turn to the alaska democratic caucuses, 15% in. bernie sanders with an even wider margin so far, 81.6% for sanders, hillary clinton with 18.4%. this is the percentage of delegates that are going to them, not the popular vote in those states. we're giving the information as we get them from the states. let's go to paul in anchorage, alaska. at the site of one of these caucuses. paul, i know you're only in one precinct. you have an idea how turnout compares this caucus season as opposed to 2008? >> reporter: we do. they are pacing ahead. they believe they are going to shatter a record. by the way, jake, actually they combined 14 of the most populous districts in all of alaska, anchorage, into west anchorage high school, so just here alone we watched the democracy in action in quite a few precincts. they are getting ready to elect delegates, to the state convention. and everybody's trying to lobby for the reasons they want to represent the democratic party here. and

bernie sanders has 79.2% of the delegates. hillary clinton with 20.8%. only 16 delegates at stake there. still bernie sanders with an impressive margin of victory. he will lead that state with more delegates than clinton as well. now of course it is the third state, hawaii, and its turn to weigh in on the democratic presidential contest. you're looking at a caucus site in honolulu where voters are getting ready to make their choices known. the door is closed. the contest begins just moments from now. washington state, alaska, and now hawaii, we're calling it western saturday. bernie sanders hopes it will be sanders' saturday after his wins in washington state and alaska. sanders is looking to make it a trifecta in hawaii, to make a dent in hillary clinton's significant lead in the delegate race in hawaii. senator sanders has a key endorsement from congresswoman tullsy gabbard. she quit her position at the democratic national committee to support him. 142 delegates at stake in this day's round of voting. hawaii's another state where democrats split their d

hillary clinton has won virginia. georgia and virginia for hillary clinton, and vermont for bernie sanders. let's look closer at georgia, and this is something to look for now. 102 delegates. and the question is if hillary clinton wins by 20 points or more, and keep in mind she won by 15, and is bernie sanders able to keep it close. if he keeps it close, he doesn't fall so far behind in

it means that of the asserted 36 elected delegates, hillary clinton will probably get 29 or 30. bernie sanders pay be five or six. that spread of 25 is important because look at what is happening to hillary clinton in michigan. bernie sanders has a 3 point edge that would suggest he will probably win maybe around 70 of the delegates if this holds up. this will be a humiliation of hillary clinton given the importance that she had placed on michigan over the last couple of days. bernie sanders' message about inincome equality, unfair trade, that is resonating with the people there. if you look at the overall candidates, in overall delegates, she is head of bernie sanders by about 200 in the overall delegate count, 699 to 478. this margin is larger than it was for obama and hillary clinton in the 2008 race. clinton people say there's no way bernie sanders can overcome this, with results like tonight, but the bernie sanders campaign saying she is a regional candidate, she can only win in the south and bernie sanders is proving that he is winning in a state that democrats have to have in no

hillary clinton. enthusiastic for the candidate, bernie sanders gets 40%, hillary clinton gets 34%. this goes to the idea that it's good for the party to keep the race going and for bernie sanders to remain in the race. unlike what's happening in the republican party where they really are tearing each other apart right now, the voters that are with bernie sanders now are so far to the left that they're going to come to hillary clinton. they don't have another place to go. i know we mentioned the green party, but it's not that strong and it's not a place where i think you're going to see democrats go. i think you're going do see the bernie sanders people go to hillary clinton. >> unless they don't vote. >> they're policy differences aren't that far off. >> all along you have been saying that if donald trump -- assuming donald trump is the nominee on the republican side you believe that's going to energyize folks on the democratic size who may not be huge hillary clinton supporters -- >> i think the democrats will have the opportunity to expand the electorate. that's one strategy that

hillary clinton. heavy turnout is great for bernie sanders. its looking for a surprise in michigan to make the argument that hillary clinton cannot rest night with the industrial midwest. the biggest problem for bernie sanders we saw because of mississippi, let's suppose this ends up 51-47. bernie sanders would perhaps win michigan with perhaps a delegate edge of 130 but doesn't make up for losing mississippi with a deficit of 20-25 delegates. the map favors hillary clinton in terms of her glide path toward the nomination. the overall vote, here are the numbers going into tonight, hillary clinton 673, bernie sanders 477, again a deficit of 200 delegates and while bernie sanders if he wins michigan that would be huge psychologically for his campaign, it doesn't change the fact that making up a 200 delegate deficit at this stage is very difficult because you have to essentially win 55-45, the entire rest of the way in order to make up this deficit. we'll see how this night blaze out. if bernie sanders were to win michigan, that would suggest some

bernie sanders won more states yesterday, super saturday. but this morning hillary clintonn better position to secure the democratic nomination than she was before the first vote on saturday was cast. clinton secured 50 delegates thanks to her overwhelming win in louisiana. bernie sanders with 46 from saturday. on the republican side, although ted cruz and donald trump each one two state, cruz ended up with a better delegate count with 64 to trump's 49 on saturday. and this morning the primary calendar is entering a critical ten day stretch. let's talk democrats. first voting in maine. there will be caucuses there for the democrats. michigan and mississippi on march 8th. and then the race moves to idaho, michigan, mississippi. similar dates on the republican side. michigan and mississippi join on the 8th and of course march 15th. the winner go home potentially states for two of the candidates, for florida, that's marco rubio's state. and john kasich has promised he will win ohio. but let's talk about today in gop voters. in puerto rico. polls open in the top of the hour and

hillary clinton will certainly win florida and north carolina. bernieas been hammering the message on trade. arguing that clinton has been either a supporter or a passive opponent of every major trade deal for the last 25 years or so dating back to nafta. that resonated in states that have been hit hard by manufacturing losses. so that's been the policy topic he focused on mostly. both candidates are operating in the shadow of donald trump right now because of the violence and everything we have seen in the trump campaign in recent days. that is casting a big question mark over the entire race. both candidates are making the argument they are best suited to go up against trump in the general election. that could be a late factor that effects the outcome. it will be fascinating to watch exit polls to see if that changes anybody's minds. >> the polls are consistent of how people feel on the economy. home prices are rising. economy is growing. unemployment rate is following. the exit polls show that people feel they are not getting a fair shake. that is he
