we're waiting to see if hillary clinton can create a pr problem for bernie sanders, right? that is ultimately what this is about tonight. which headline, who will have the better headline and if you're sanders, losing kentucky on top of the nevada debacle and suddenly you're looking like a spoil sport, like sour grapes, a guy who is looking to take his ball and go home. that is what this is about. >> follow us on that briefly. when the clinton campaign made this dramatic decision when that they would get back into the game. they out spent bernie sanders in kentucky. did something like a dozen campaign events in the last few days is that because they knew it was within reach? it was foreseeable to them as well? >> they went in, they polled it and they saw it was within reach. they saw it was winnable. they were up by a couple of points i think in the polling and they thought, okay it is a winnable race. might as well give it a shot because they had the money. >> yeah. >> and it wasn't going to be a lot of money and they saw that sanders wasn't going to contest it. sanders dec

bernie sanders taking oregon. the headline is all about bernie sanders defiant statement last night in the question of whether the democratic party will be able to unite for the general election. just moments ago on this show we heard from jeff weaver, the sanders campaign manager. he struck a more conciliatory tone stressing that the dispute between the democratic party and sanders campaign was more personal between democratic national chair debbie wasserman schultz and their campaign and state of nevada. and the sanders campaign stressing that bernie sanders would be behind hillary clinton and opposed to donald trump in the general election. donald trump this morning all over twitter trying to coax bernie sanders supporters to his side saying the democratic process rigged against sanders saying sanders voters basically should give him a look. let's talk about what we heard from bernie sanders and what we heard from the two campaigns with our panel. we have with us jeff greenfield, contributor with politico. jeff

remember, the democrats split their delegates proportionally so both hillary clinton and bernie sanders will add to their tallies. heading into tonight, cnn estimates that clinton has a total of 2224 delegates and 159 short of the number she needs to lock up the nomination. sanders has a total of 1448 delegates. all that includes the so-called superdelegates. tonight, the presumptive republican nominee donald trump is confident of a win in west virginia as well as the gop only primary in nebraska while he no longer has any opposition, he still needs 157 more delegates to officially secure the nomination. jake? >> thanks, wolf. we have correspondents on the campaign trail covering candidates. first, let's go to democrats already looking ahead to the next contest. jeff zeleny is with hillary clinton in kentucky and jeff, hillary clinton not only looking ahead to the next contest, she's looking ahead to the general election. >> reporter: she is indeed, jake. she just finished giving a speech in louisville, kentucky a few minutes ago and there is no mention of bernie sanders at all, perhaps

har harry reid is furious at bernie sanders. he's friends with him. he believes the sanders campaign did not do enough to tamp this down. so look for senator sanders to address that night. he is going to be coming here to california. he believes that he still has a slim chance of winning. he's trying to win states up until then, but june 7th is when california votes. bernie sanders competing so aggressively here for that. the reality is what is causing all this anger is hillary clinton is winning. she's not going to reach her magic number of 2383 tonight, but her campaign believes she will get closer to that and could reach it before california. they are holding out of a possibility for a win in kentucky. she's been campaigning there more than she has in several weeks even as she turns her attention to donald trump here. so the clinton campaign not having any events tonight at all. they're trying to pivot and move beyond this. what happens in kentucky tonight if she gets a win will be a moral victory for her as this race goes on for about a month longe

it's an impressive win if you're bernie sanders. em for sanders is we've allocated some of the delegates so far, but as of now based on the results so far bernie sanders has cut six delegates. what was a 303 clinton lead in pledged delegates is down to 297 with another half dozen delegates to allocate tonight. even though sanders gets a win, it's baby steps in he terms of catching up and he needed to win 66% of the remaining pledged delegates to catch her in the pledged delegate chase. he's going to be shy of that in west virginia even though it's an impressive win. he's not going to get 66% of the delegates out of west virginia which means that increases his math and makes it steeper as he goes forward. he's confident in oregon. the clinton campaign thought they would win kentucky, that one seems in play for bernie sanders and the clinton campaign is counting on new jersey and new mexico. this could be the ultimate battle ground on the second last day in the democratic contest the direct of columbia is last. this could be a key defi

let's be real generous to bernie sanders. let's say wins 70%, 80% of the votes in south dakota, north dakota, montana and new mexico, these look like they could be sanders states. let's say it's landslides and he nets from these states a total of 45. he wins by 45 delegates over hillary clinton, that 272 then would come down to 227. now, where could he erase the rest? puerto rico, the virgin islands, district of columbia, these look like, again, to be really good -- if sanders does well here, he's breaking even. let's see say he exceeds expectations, breaks even, new jersey. look at new jersey, 126 delegates up for grabs there. let's say sanders breaks even. do you know why that would be a major accomplishment? number one, closed primary state. in umb number two, poll has him down 28 points. let's say he erases a 28 point gap and breaks even, he's still down 227 even though he's vastly exceeding expectations and that would leave one state, california. and if you want to erase a 227 pledged delegate gap in the state of californ

more than half of those voters sided with bernie sanders. his populous message on trade really resonating in west virginia. 53% say trade with other countries kills u.s. jobs. that group broke for sanders. 35% said trade creates jobs. that group was split evenly between clinton and sanders. west virginia, of course, coal country, about a third of democratic voters said they are coal industry households. 55% of those voters broke for bernie sanders. that follows hillary clinton's comments about putting coal miners and companies out of business. she's since tried to sit down and back pedal that and say, look, i want to help people in west virginia get jobs. those comments about coal, something really hard to dodge here. on the republican side, obviously a win for donald trump, but that support behind him is pretty solid. 59% of republican primary voters in west virginia say it's likely trump would beat hillary clinton. another 28% say it's somewhat likely. 74% tell us they'd be excited or optimistic if trump is elected. >>> all right. 12 minute

bernie sanders had a convincing win over hillary clinton in west virginia. so what lies ahead, and when might sanders reassess where the race stands and what role he needs to play in it going forward? >> i don't think you'll see bernie sanders reassess his candidacy until after the last primary is said and done in june, going into the convention in july. he has given every indication that he still intends to continue this all the way to the convention, in fact telling his supporters that he believes he can go ahead and win this nomination outright. of course at this point that's impossible with pledges delegates alone. they're aren't enough left in remaining contests for him to do that, but he could convince theoretically some super delegates to change their minds and support him. so he is going to stay in this all the way and, you know, there really isn't an argument against him doing that because hillary clinton herself, back in 2008, stayed in the race pretty much all the way. so you're not going to see calls directly from her camp for him to pull out, and
