we're going to hear from republican house member marsha blackburn, and bernie sanders later in the hour. but first we're going to go right to our panel. with us from washington, ayesha moody mills and here in new york rick hertzberg of the new yorker. thank you both for being here. you have written about what it takes for a president to maintain trust. and you cited some of your experience in the carter administration. people love making comparisons. i actually want to talk later in the hour about how the president is doing a little better than some people realize. but what were you getting at with that comparison? >> well, something that happens, especially in second terms, of course jimmy carter didn't get a second term. but a president runs up against the sludge of american governance. he has put out a vision, he has made promises. and then when it turns out that the way the machinery grind, the promises are fulfilled partially, a few completely, and many not at all. and that just -- that just rusts away the trust that should be there. and sometimes the president helps it along a lit

joining me now, vermont independent senator, bernie sanders.ure, thank you for joining me. >> my pleasure. >> we are hearing there could be a three-month temporary extension. where does that stand? >> well, the bill is going to be introduced, it should be on the floor as soon as we get back. i think there is widespread support in the democratic caucus for doing it. we hope we can get republican support. the fact of the matter is, to my mind, it is not just immoral to leave 1.3 million americans and their families out there hanging with no income, at a time when long-term unemployment is almost a record level, but it is also bad economics. what happens is, when these people have no income coming in, they are obviously not spending any money, the economists tell us that will result in a .2 drop in the gdp, and the loss of about 160,000 jobs i think from a moral perspective from an economic perspective, we can't turn our backs on struggling people who can't find work. >> you are aware in are republicans who want unemployment benefits to be specifi

joining me now is senator bernie sanders of vermont.or, let me go right to it. 12 days to go for the long-term unemployed and the house is not in session. what will it take to get republicans to take action, senator? >> well, al, this is just the continuation of the republican party's war on working people and low income people. we shouldn't be surprised that they want to terminate extended unemployment benefits. these are the same guys who voted for legislation which would cut food stamps by $40 billion over a ten-year period. these are the folks who want to cut medicaid. they want to cut social security. they want to cut medicare. and their business is about representing the wealthiest people in this country and the largest corporations. and how that is going to turn around, al, is only when tens of millions of people stand up and say enough is enough. the function of congress is to represent the middle class and working people of this country and not just billionaires and big campaign contributors. >> senator, they're talking more co

joining me right now is vermont senator bernie sanders. sir, it's good to see you this morning.s i pointed out, the president will speak in moments from now highlighting the aca and speaking against income inequality and trying to frame his agenda for the next three years and that does include this renewed push to raise the minimum wage. that is something that two-thirds of americans including more than half of republicans are on board with. the minimum wage currently $7.25 an hour. we've got a current senate bill to raise it to $10.10. however, sir, as we look at "the new york times" it points out it's likely to hit a wall when it comes to the house. republicans argue an increase would force employers to lay off workers and reduce hours. how does the president make meaningful progress when the republicans in the house are constantly putting up roadblocks. >> well, he makes them an offer they can't refuse. that is you rally the american people to demand that the starvation minimum wage today of $7.25 is raised to at least $10.10 an hour. that's something the people in every stat

for more, let me bring in senator bernie sanders of vermont. senator, good to have you with us tonight. senator, what do you say to these republicans who claim raising the minimum wage would be a job killer? >> i say they just are factually wrong. in my state of vermont, our minimum wage is $8.60 compared to the national minimum wage of $7.25 and we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in america. you have states where there is it virtually no minimum wage at all, and their unemployment rate is much higher. the facts just don't bear it out. the reality is, if we raise the minimum wage to at least $10.10 an hour, about 30 million americans would get a pay raise, and 88% of them are adults. these are not kids. these are working families, struggling to keep their heads above water. they need a pay raise. we've got to pass it. >> can mcdonald's afford to pay its employees $15 an hour? it's interesting, senator. since this demonstration took place in 130 cities across america last thursday, none of the fast food folks have come out and said we
