so this field is so much different than it was in 2016, provides some potential strengths for bernie sanders but liabilities too. >> his ability to raise money online is being replicated and advanced now by beto o'rourke and others who are taking off on where bernie had this big advantage against hillary clinton, not just on the way he scheduled himself but also the way he raised money. >> that's right. this field is obviously much different than he had in 2016. if you want to look at just what your point was, the small dollar recurring donations, as he kept saying, $27 was the average, he has by far the biggest fundraising base of anyone in this 2020 field, twice or three times as many small dollars. he'll have to get those people back on board. now they have obviously many more choices. the one thing i'm struck with, particularly in new hampshire, is that while we don't have different lanes yet of the moderate lane or the establishment lane or wherever you want to go with it, we have a one-person lane right now and that is bernie sanders up in new hampshire. and those people in iowa are fl

bernie sanders jumping in to this race. there were some questions about whether or not he was going to do it. there were reports of him having meals with elizabeth warren as they both talked about what their plans were going to be. and i think the question is does he have that same energy this time around that he showed in 2016, or is that energy now spread out among too many other potential choices for democratic voters? i think when you talk to people who are working on some of these other campaigns, they're looking at bernie sanders and elizabeth warren and saying the two of them are going to cannibalize each other, essentially. they're both trying to appeal to the same set of voters and that's going to clear out some lanes for other candidates to find a path. now, bernie sanders is somebody who really kind of rose on the strength of his own personal authenticity. it's really clear, and i know you know this from having covered the republican side in 2016 as well. that's what voters are looking for. bernie sanders resonat

he talked a lot about elizabeth warren, now talking about bernie sanders like they're buddies. this is a crowded field, and it already includes a number of candidates who have adopted some of the sanders positions we just talked about. could that be strengthening maybe an independent bid from howard schultz as he's looking to run third party? >> he wrote a piece, howard schultz, former ceo of starbucks, saying mistakes are too high to cross our fingers and hope the democratic party nominates a moderate who can win over enough independents and disaffected republicans and even fellow democrats to defeat trump next year. any opponent can oust trump no matter how far to the radical left they are is a fallacy. what do you make of that? >> certainly republicans have been seizing on the litmus test now in the democratic party ranging from abortion to single payer to opposing the wall and to a number of things that you have to be on certain sides of the issue, and that plays into schultz's argument. he's got the money, is he dynamic enough to actually win a third party, well, no. but co

this is a progressive group that endorsed bernie sanders early on in 2016. now this group is saying that although they did in 2016, blessed with a diverse field of candidates we are looking forward to seeing how sanders and the movement behind him make the case for political revolution in a very different 2020 contest. again, i think that says it all. on the revolution theme, you know your history, jim. sometimes revolutions eat their leaders. this might be the case. or maybe it's not. >> that's quite a phrase. jeff zeleny, sanders is right when he says a lot of the positions that were outliers in 2016, particularly between sanders and hillary clinton -- health care for all, et cetera, if they are not main stream, you have several other democratic candidates who were staking out positions there. does that make it harder for sanders to distinguish himself, to stand out in this field? >> i think it does in the sense that he's not the one alternative. he's not the alternative on the policy side. he's not the only alternative to anyone but hillary clinton. it mak
