ted cruz won nothing, finished third in four out of five states. bernie sanders won only rhode island. it was a big night for donald trump. a big night for hillary clinton. what do the exit polls say about how they got there? let's bring back our panel to discuss. brian stelter, dylan byers, eric bradner. we asked an interesting question, a pertinent question, giving the thought this might be a contested convention. we asked voters, if no one gets to 1237, if no one hits the magic number, who should the republican nominee be? look at what they said. in pennsylvania, they said essentially the primary winner. the person who wins the most votes. they said the same thing in connecticut. they said the same thing in maryland as well, 67%. two-thirds or more, eric, saying that's who should get the nomination, not some delegate game. you begin to see maybe why donald trump has been hitting this so hard over the last few weeks. it may not be because he thinks the republican party will change the rules, but he thinks the discussion about the rules might be helping

[ cheering ] >> there we heard it. bernie news, that he has just won the wyoming caucuses as cnn is projecting, you could hear the loud applause and the crowd going crazy to that news at that bernie sanders rally there in long island city, new york. let's turn now to the republican side. ted cruz took a fresh swipe at donald trump when he spoke at the colorado republican convention today. let's listen to that. >> you know, it's easy to talk about making america great again. you can even print that on a baseball cap. but the real question is, do you understand the principles and values that made america great in the first place? >> donald trump didn't bother going to colorado for today's republican convention. instead the new york billionaire visited manhattan's 9/11 memorial. cruz is coming off of a big wisconsin victory and picked up 21 of colorado's pledged delegates. what happens next in the trump versus cruz showdown? let's talk it over with jeffrey lord and ben ferguson. jeffrey, first to you, the obvious question here.

if you look at the fox exit polls, you have a situation where among men, for example, bernie sanders won 30 7 points. and then among women, bernie sanders won by 1 point. this is potentially the first female president in american history and, yet, she lost by a point in the exit polls anyway. it's a dead heat. among female voters. the point is, there are real problems here for her in a general election. yes, she may beat bernie sanders. she still has this big lead despite this recent momentum from sanders. but there are danger signs in those exit polls and the question is going to be can the republicans capitalize it? if their numbers continue to crater with women, the republicans, hillary clinton's' problems with women won't matter, bill. >> it's there is a debate, right, tomorrow between bernie sanders and hillary clinton? they are debating. >> next week april 14th. and i know you have been nervous but,lv["é look, i know you said you would move to ireland if bernie sanders wins. look, i checked with air lingus. there are three flights a day. this is a true story between jfkened london.

that's what we're seeing tonight in the last seven primaries where bernie won six out of seven.ere to win after winning wisconsin, goes on to win new york and some other northeastern states you bet these superdelegates, because their number one goal is to win the white house. they are going to say, look where the momentum is. look where the enthusiasm is. look who keeps winning delegates and primaries and caucuses. maybe we better take a second look at bernie sanders. it happened in 2008. it could happen in 2016. >> van jones, you've been someone who said all along this healthy debate is good for the democratic party. good to have this discussion out there. is it still good right now if, as you've said, the gloves are off to use a cliche, if bernie sanders is saying hillary clinton should apologize to military members who died in the iraq war? doesn't that leave a mark on the party or on the candidate who ultimately does emerge? >> we are getting into the yellow zone starting to get into the red zone. we're going to see now. bernie sanders has a challenge. he's got to take the f

hillary won among african-americans but they only make up one-tenth the population of the great state of wisconsin. bernie fact that it was an open convention where independents and even republicans could vote for somebody else. and he won a quarter -- more than a quarter of the democratic voter and he won 40% of the independents. >> he points he does better against donald trump than hillary clinton head to head. tucker carlson said this before he left. >> he's clearly an effective insurgent. but here's the problem mathematically. he's much closer to hillary clinton in delegates than most understand. if you take out the super delegates who are fundamentally a nondemocratic, undemocratic part of this contest, their evidence is rigged on her behalf, he's 300 away from her. so at what point do the bernie voters wake up and realize this is going to be stolen way from them by the democratic establishment? >> so funny because that's what's people on the republican side are saying, look, if it goes to an uncontested convention, it might get stolen from donald trump or ted cruz. >> i wonder if she's worried about

won wyoming. >> reporter: bernie sanders was supposed to win wyoming. it was white and rural and get the 17 delegates and hillary clinton wins six. bernie will be able to say he gained two delegates on clinton, 250 delegate lead. on the face it doesn't mean much. but it continues the momentum narrative for the sanders' campaign. they have won eight of the last nine. it could help the sanders gain more support in new york which holds a prize of 270 delegates. he has cut the deficit to ten percent. the sanders believe if they can come within a point or two it will impact races in pennsylvania and california. the sanders' campaign is banking on a contested convention and that they don't get the delegates to clinch. he can get them to love hill -- leave hillary clinton and support him. >> what is the latest today. >> bernie sanders speaking in the different boroughs and addressing latino and black voters and went to washington heights and bronx and queens and end in harlem. hillary clinton speak nothing brooklyn where her campaign h d head -- headquarters a

nbc news projecting the vermont senator, bernie sanders, has won the state's democratic caucus. eaking in the last 20 minutes. so with that win here with 98% in, bernie sanders the projected winner with 56% of the vote, now extending the senator's winning streak now in that momentum with that win out of wyoming. i want to bring back in nbc senior political ed tor mark murray. when you're talking about the headline here, is the bigger headline not so much that bernie sanders wins wyoming, no big surprise really with that, but is it how close it was would you say is the headline here? >> yeah, frances, i think that's fair. i think that this is something that both sides can actually be very happy about. bernie sanders ends up getting the win as he was expected to do, really continues to end up having momentum going into the new york primary on april 19th. but hillary clinton kept it much closer than expected. one of the reasons why what was going on in wyoming was a closed caucus. and you end up having independents were not as able to participate. and that is actually very instructi

bernie sanders winning six of the last seven contest. he said, we woneven out of the last eight primaries and caucuses, what does that mean for the clinton camp? >> well, i think obviously bernie has momentum, on a roll. he really only picked up, you know, a handful of delegates, he would need 15 wisconsins to really pull even with her on the delegate count and therefore, i still the he has an outside chance and she still remains favorite. >> clearly, hillary has a huge lead with the superdelegates, but i would ask you this question, you look at what's happened with hillary in so many states like wisconsin and michigan where she's not winning half of the democratic vote. bernie sanders is kind of crazy when it comes to economics, she appears to me as a pretty wounded candidate going into the general election. huh would you refute republican claims that the voters don't want just another clinton? >> well, i think there's no desire for trump, cruz and clinton has an uphill battle, i think, to establish her message to the general and the sooner he can put

bernie sanders won it big. they haven't actually given out all the delegates yet. when they do, that 246 is going to come down to 210. but 210 is still an awful lot of ground for bernie sanders to make up. i'll give you one good example. new york is the next state to vote. bernie sanders an underdog there right now. 247 delegates up for grabs in new york. even if sanders comes close in new york and loses, that delegate number is going to get bigger. that delegate gap for him is going to get bigger. it's going to go in the wrong direction. to make up 210 delegates in a democratic race, the way these things are given out in democratic races, that is a steep, steep hill to climb. bernie sanders basically has to win out if he's going to do it, starting with new york, jose. >> so steve, stay with that, the graphic you have on the big board there. explain to us how you can win a state like wyoming and end up tied. >> so this is -- the democratic rules, and this applies in every state. it's proportional. they're set up in a way to sort of maximize the number of delegates e

on the democratic side although bernie sanders won the wyoming caucuses, due to the state's rules he and hillary clinton both picked up seven delegates. we begin with bernie sanders who joins us from new york city. welcome, senator. is the victory in wyoming a picture of where the campaign is at this moment a win for you, sounds good but then you look at the delegate number you split it with hillary clinton? >> well, that is the eighth victory that we have won in the last nine contests. there is no question i think that we have the momentum. if you look at national polling where we started this campaign the recent polls actually have national polls ahead of secretary clinton. we're closing the gap in new york and pennsylvania and california. i am feeling really great. i believe that we have a real path to victory and that at the end of the day we're going to win this? >> dickerson: let's talk about that path. because you still have to make up that deficit in delegates. the people who look at the math here say that that path requires you -- you need big wins, do you think that is proba

he won 13 delegates in colorado over the weekend. on the democratic side -- bernie won the wyoming caucuses saturday night. but due to state rules he and hillary clinton came away with seven delegates. sanders spoke with john dickerson. >> is the victory in wyoming kind of a picture of where the campaign is at this moment? a win for you, which sounds good, then you look at delegate numbers and split it with hillary clinton. >> john that's the eighth victory we have won in nine contests. there is no question, i think that we have the momentum. if you look at national polling, where we started this campaign, we were 60 points down. some of the recent polls have us, national polls have us ahead of secretary clinton. we are closing the gap in new york, pennsylvania, california. i am feeling really great. and, and i believe that we have a real path to victory. and that at the end of the day we are going to win this. >> let's talk about the path to victory though. because the you still have to make up the deficit in pledge delegates that hillary clinton has the. so the pe
