downgraded at bernstein, apparently the stock likes the upgrade. it is up 1.5%.orthern trust down 4.75% as the ups was below expectations. >> when you look at every pit down here on the nynex floor, the risk trade is back on. we're looking at crude prices for the front month contract, for the ma contract, above $82 a barrel. the most active contract, the june contract, it is up over $83 a barrel, close to $84 a barrel. we're looking at copper prices that are bouncing off their three-week low. gold up $7. keep in mind, we're also hearing from kuwait's oil minister that oil prices around $75 to $90 a barrel, that's a pretty good price for oil. and that's where he thinks that oil prices will be for the near term. meanwhile, we're also looking at gold, seen as an inflation hedge by many traders, and seeing signs of inflation when you look at india raising interest rates, look at the acceleration producer prices in germany. the other factor helping oil prices today is the fact that we have had about half of the flights in europe that were grounded back in the air. and

jeffrey bernstein is senior restaurant analyst at barclays capital, joins us now. jeffrey, good morning. thanks for being here. >> good morning, mark. how are you? >> pretty good. i'm reading the press release. chief executive officer jim skinner says mcdonald's' compelling menu, unmatched convenience and unbeatable value generated another strong quarterly performance. what do you think is driving it, the compelling menu? >> we'd say all those components are very much true. the combination of value -- >> what's compelling about their menu? >> well, they've got a good mix of value offerings to attract that low-end consumer, and they've been pushing the envelope with more premium products as well. so, it has little bit of everything, broadening out their customer base, and it's not just domestic, but clearly seeing tremendous strength internationally. >> can you break out or does the company break out how coffee is doing for them? >> the coffee and the broader beverage platform rollout has been a big benefit for them. the hot beverages were rolled out last year and i

my colleague, jake bernstein, and i investigated hedge fund magnitar that did deals with nine investment banks, cdos like this, $40 billion worth of deals, and they were similar to the goldman advocase deal. so, i think the s.e.c. is only at the beginning here and they're going to look at other banks and look at higher-ups at goldman, and i don't think this ends. and this shows, you know, the crisis is still with us. >> jesse, was it standard practice in, maybe not in every case, but in enough cases, for you to say that magnitar, which was like paulson, making pets against, that they often, and with deals with other banks, had a say in selecting the collateral to be included in the synthetic cdos? >> our story showed that in seven different cdos, magnitar asked for riskier collateral to be put into the cdos, they pressured cdo managers and demanded it from investment banks. and in fact, magnatar says their situations were known to the dealers and cdo managers. so, this was common for the sponsors of cdos. >> right. so, if it's fraudulent, i mean, if it's a criminal act, then this is a cr

we also have pat buchanan in washington, carl bernstein here in new york along with john heilman, mee geist. let's start reading our must readings. we're going to start with david brooks, "new york times," the ecstacy of fiscal policy. hes, first you need to change social norms. the financial cries has helped to peach people the dangers of excessive debt but there's probably going to have to be a public crusade like the ones against littering and shoeking to hammer the point home. think warpen buffett tv spots, think oprah, think tom hanks. someone has to remind the country that debt is selfish. second the whole deficit hawk brand needs a makeover. accept a lower standard of living. this is still a billy mays nation, thank god. the message has to be america can be richer and shinier. debt reduction has to be about renewal and prosperity, not pain and sacrifice. pat buchanan, if you agree with that, how do you do that? >> i don't agree with that at all. look, the deficit is enormous, $1.6 trillion. trillion dollar deficits as far as we can see. if you cut out social security entirely
