bernstein: i would probably suggest getting lots of exercise... or making exercise a regular lifestyle habit, because there are certain cancers where we know that the exercise reduces your risk. exercise does definitely reduce your risk of colon cancer. we see it in studies of men. we see it in studies of women. i think obesity is related to risk of several cancers so people who are extremely heavy have higher risk of certain cancers. i want to mention that i'm very excited about the potential that we're on the brink of having medications that dramatically lower cancer risks. and i would predict that in the next five or ten years, we will have recommendations that people take a certain type of pill after a certain age that lowers the potential to develop cancer because we'll understand which cell processes, as a background noise, contribute to the genetic mutations that cause cancer, and have effective treatments for them. we're probably never going to be able to eradicate all cancers. i think it's going to be very unlikely. so we have to use thes

. >> peter, jonathan bernstein in the "washington post" predicts that the talking fill bust worry beaying republicans would take to the floor and start arguing for bill. fox news and rush limbaugh would treat them as heroes. the result is they would be stacked up in line to deliver ringing denunciations stocked with the latest talking points there is no need to talk from the phone books when there are transcripts of glenn beck's show to deliver. so what do you make of that assessment? >> i think we have certainly seen that republicans in the senate, especially have been willing to find loopholes and exploit them to their advantage. whenever they can find loopholes in the rules, they have taken advantage of them. i don't think there is anything particularly wrong with that the rules are the rules. you make use of them as they are. but the thing to remember here i think that has been overlooked a little bit is that when democrats were in the minority in this senate, they were very wary of reforming the filibuster. joe biden said that filibuster reforms are about the arrogance of power.

joining me is jared bernstein, senior fellow at the center for budget policies and priorities.d to see you again, when it comes to the credit rating, we've seen it happen before. all three credit rating agencies are saying you've got to put a deal together in washington, if you guys in washington don't get it done, we're going to downgrade your credit. >> we've seen this movie before. it's not a good movie. i will remind viewers that the last time standard and poors did take us down a notch, it actually didn't hurt our ability to finance our debt at all. so that was kind of blown off by the markets, but this time could be different. there's one interesting wrinkle here. i do believe that if the political discourse, which is actually sounding a little better lately breaks down, everything is dysfunctional by the end of the year and we go over the cliff, i suspect there will be a debt downgrade and it could hurt. but there's a wrinkle in the following sense -- remember if we go over the fiscal cliff, there's about $600 billion of deficit reduction in one year. now that's too much
