howard bernstein, you said you're feeling rain coming down now? >> some sprinkles.highs. about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. this is doppler 9000. look at all the showers, especially in ohio and west virginia. locally, we're tracking these very light sprinkles. you see one down toward the northern neck. a little bit of green specks here and there. shenandoah valley in the mountains right now, we have heavier showers. i want to focus first on the metro. you see them down here right on the beltway in fairfax county. also in prince george's and d.c. we've been seeing these showers. everything is moving to the east at 25 to 30 miles an hour. the northeast over toward capitol heights, the beltway when you get just north of andrews approaching bowie with a couple of showers there and even around college park. to the west we've got the heavier shower activity we're seeing from front royal back toward strasburg, woodstock. everything moving east. if you're in fauquier county, prince william right down 66, looks like it's coming our way. there's more activity in the the

bernstein. >>> we've got breaking news out of baltimore. within the past hour we just learned that freddie gray died of what they're calling a single high energy injury according to the autopsy report obtained by the baltimore sun. this injury is similar to what you'd suffer in a shallow water diving accident where your head slams into the bottom of the pool, but in this case his head hit the side of the van. the death fit the definition of an accident but it was ruled a homicide because police officers did not follow safety procedures. as for those officers, baltimore city state's attorney said all six pled not guilty. trial is set for october 13th. >>> right now the debate over the confederate flag and symbols is taking center stage here in our part of the world. virginia governor terry mcauliffe pushing to get rid of a state sponsored license plate that features the confederate flag. he called that symbol divisive and peggy fox talked to the sons of the confederate veterans. they're the only people who have been allowed to purchase those

meteorologist howard bernstein standing by with the first look at the forecast. howard? >> hey, mike, so far we're watching the steadier showers off to our south and east. a lot of them are in eastern north carolina, southern southwestern virginia but they're inching toward us and we have the stuff on the eastern shore we're tracking from easton to denton more so toward delaware. locally drizzle, a heavier mist if you will. you see this stuff in prince william, fairfax, over toward montgomery as well and even northwest some light drizzle outside. everything is moving toward the east. we still have the easterly push from the winds. that's a colder, damp wind coming in off the atlantic. off to the south notice richmond seeing the steadier showers and the concern is some of this could inch up toward us for the afternoon commute so that's idea yellow alert. temps are not growing to be moving much. they're not high at all. we're in the mid-50s. 54 rockville. 57 waldorf. perhaps we'll northbound the mid-60s for highs for the afternoon. i'll have your seven-day in a few. >>> a

let's get right over to howard bernstein. what do you say? >> it's a good night. we had a few showers and isolated storms south and east of us for the most part, but tonight, no problems, everything calmed down. tomorrow looks good and monday, the heat, the humidity builds, so will the threat for storms. here's the satellite and radar. you can see all the showers. quite a few over toward the ocean beaches. if you know anybody who was at the shore, they spent time doing shopping until those storms pass. right now, temperatures, big difference. one thing about washington, we have the potomac river, of course all the cement and the asphalt near the airport and the city and holds the temperatures. we're sitting at 72 at national. you get out to some of the rural areas, already down to 60 degrees. in the low to mid 50s by sunday morning. along with bowie, 68 on the bay in north beach and 65 white oak. down south, dumfries, manassas, all in the mid 60s. we're in for a good night tonight and i think a decent sunday. in fact, in the morning in washington, we'll be in the

julie: bernstein upgrading the utilities.big declines for the year to date as utilities have been the worst performing sector in the s&p 500 in part because of concerns about higher interest rates. matt: the white line there. julie: the philadelphia utilities index. fallen by about 10%. why is bernstein coming out in upgrading the group? one of the things they're looking at his valuations and what you're looking at is the s&p 500 forward price-to-earnings ratio estimated -- based on estimated earnings versus that philadelphia utility index. as we continue to see the s&p valuations climb around 18 and a forward basis the utilities price-to-earnings ratio has been pulling back. that is one of the things that bernstein is looking at. coincidently, wells fargo is also saying now's the time to look at dividends. these are a few of those she is mentioning. transocean iron mountain which is a frontier communications -- and frontier communities and. olivia: year to date, utilities down 12%. matt: health care has done well. olivia: lo

bernstein will dissect now. >> loudoun county through howard county right now, we'll show you this monster from leesburg through germantown, columbia, baltimore and a ton of lightning. leesburg with rainfall rate in excess of 4 to 5 inches an hour and flood warnings in western maryland and baltimore. around leesburg, the really dark reds there, poodleville and all this light -- poolesville and all this lightning. some of the hail reports earlier from the radar in the 2 to 3-inch category. you can trim that back a little so that when topper is talking about golf ball size hail that we're looking at in this system here, this is headed toward german up to potentially with large hail in excess of maybe 2 inches. that's one thing. we're also looking from gaithersburg to rockville to olney with lightning and from dayton to ellicott city not only heavy rain but a ton of lightning. the whole thing is moving more southeast than east, silver spring and college park and after 7:00 in bowie. it does look like most of the metro will have to deal with severe weather the next hour or two. >> probably by

first alert meteorologist howard bernstein tracking how hot it is going to get. howard? >> tuesday could be the day we set the records at 98 and 96. and that's the one day that somebody might get to triple digits. but today certainly warm up. 94. right now temps still in the 80s and the 90s. cooling to 92 here in washington with that 93 in college park. several other areas have fallen in to the upper 80s, which is kind of humid. but relatively quiet as opposed to yesterday's big damaging storms with all the rain. not much going on as we've got some showers and storms in pennsylvania. one severe thunderstorm watch box off in southern west virginia. we had some isolated showers that had popped up during the 5:00 hour. in places like culpeper, and they had moved across here. that's it, they fell apart, so there is not much left as we will track this stuff to see if they could get towards maybe some parts of the valley by 8:00. your evening if you're going out, not too bad. warm, upper 80s at 8:00. down to the 70s by midnight. i'll be back in a few minutes talking about that

howard bernstein has a first look at the forecast. >> relatively comfortable. in fact, a little bit of smoke from canada filtering in with sunshine that may keep us in the mid- to upper 80s today. as we look at the satellite and radar, there's really nothing here. a couple of showers and storms to our northwest and the midwest. really the temperatures we'll watch. today's high, lowered it down to 87 because i think the smoke will keep us from getting all that hot. look at the heat building from indianapolis west. st. louis, kansas city, all in the mid-90s. looks as if that will be moving towards the east tomorrow so charleston 95. we'll be in that 94, 95 range ourselves as we get into the day on thursday. with that heat, the humidity is also going to crank up so we're talking about heat and how it's potentially closer to 100 degrees for the second half of the week. for this afternoon, some hazy sun. mid, possibly upper 80s with south winds at 10 miles an hour. i'll see you in a few minutes with the rest of that seven-day forecast. >> thanks, howard. >>> it's da

howard bernstein is tracking the weather. >> 95 degrees at noon at reagan national. i believes that ate hottest we've been all year. a front is on the way. you see it on doppler 9000. see this line of the back edge approaching pittsburgh? that's where the cold front is. ahead of it hot, humid. as this front comes our way with the afternoon heating, we're likely to see showers and storms develop here. some of those could have heavy downpours like we've seen the last couple of days. a couple of light sprinkles west of winchester straddling the mason-dixon line. around here there's nothing on doppler. doppler for the afternoon or futurecast for the afternoon, and this is a simulated doppler, shows the scattering of showers and storms at 3:00. potentially a few stronger ones down toward fredricksburg. then by 4:00, 4:30 d.c. south looks like it will see most of the action. as we get into the evening hours, the area of rain likely will be south of us. so we'll see things settle down but you see the difference with the front. north of the front cleveland 74. pittsburgh 76

analysis we now bring in the firm of bernstein and mauricei jared, pretty solid report here. >> let me off the bat, 120, 220, 280, that's the number in hundreds of thousands of jobs that we've added on payrolls in each of the last three months. last month payroll up 280,000. if you take the average over the past three months we've added about 200,000 jobs per month. i hear the world solid a lot today. you used that word earlier. it's a right word. solid, reliable recovery in terms of the job market. this is important and notable given the first quarter gdp group was negative. the markets had a reaction that wasn't so up beat as you suggested and we see that sometimes when you get kind of good news for main street it's considered to be less good news or bad news for wall street. >> imagine that. >> so the idea there is that -- >> the idea there is that the federal reserve is going to intervene more quickly than we thought to put on the gas because the job market is heating up. i would say fed reserve be patient, hold your fire. this recovery still isn't reaching enough people. >> what s
