floyd, fran, bertha, isabel, irene. the angle they come in and how close they come. but yeah, we are storm weary. i know there has been a fair amount of coverage on storm florence before it made landfall but did you believe it was going to be this destructive? it was first scheduled to come pretty much straight into this area as a category four. at 140mph winds, that put people on high alert. local people have a tendency to stay in storms but i think if it had stayed at level four, many, many more would have left. a lot left at level two because you never know what they're going to do between the forecasters' plan and when they actually make landfall. i can't imagine what the damage would have been if it had been a category four and having lasted this long. we were very close to the eye for 36 hours and that is what has caused so much flooding and damage here. 0ur damage here has been flooding but mostly wind damage. but now the flooding is inland and it's still raining. we have had over 20 inches of rain in the past tw

and you in your career, i understand, have covered bertha, fran, hurricane matthew.e will be different from all that? >> you know, i got an e-mail this morning that had a warning from the national weather service that said potentially life threatening flooding is likely. hurricane force winds are likely, potentially life threatening storm surge is likely. those are three for three in things you don't want. this storm has more power, more potential storm surge than any storm that really has come our way in the past couple of decades. and that's what the local leaders here are trying to get to the people and tell them in carolina beach and the beaches that if you don't have a safe place to stay, you really shouldn't be here. go to a shelter. find a safe place to stay. that's what we have been trying to get across to people, is you need a safe place to stay during this storm. don't worry about your house. you can replace that. you and your family are priority one. >> that's our role, right? we serve as the town crier being in the storm to show people how horrible it is

liz: hurricane bertha, hurricane fran, hurricane floyd, were all hurricanes many residents are quiteamiliar with. this is not your first rodeo, certainly. what is the number one thing you would advise ahead of the next one, and i hate to say it but there's something called isaac and another storm called helene that are kind of out on the atlantic ocean. we don't know if they will eventually come our way, but they look like they are forming. what's the number one thing people should always have on hand ahead of anything like this? >> you know, i always say make sure you have the basics. make sure you have water, make sure you have batteries, make sure you have flashlights. things like generators and shingles and tarps, it all just depends on how the storm hits, whether it's a wind event or a water event. but i would always say have things in place so your personal belongings, your birth certificates and social security cards, just making sure you are preparing ahead of time, because they become very emotional as these storms get closer and you want to make sure you are taking care of

i was standing there when bertha hit. it's already at those height levels. tomorrow we're going to do it again at the morning high tide 12 hours later. so let me get into the latest with the storm. still a category 2. it's been wobbling around a little bit here. we're stuck in this outer band with tropical storm force winds. we saw gadi being blown around there in the morehead city area. new bern is well inland here. this is not just a coastal event. it's even far inland we'll see this flooding. i'm sure there will be water rescues taking place far away from the coast and inland areas where those rivers are getting backed up. the winds are ramping up. winds gusting to 63 here. 54 in hatteras. isn't too bad. we're waiting for it in wilmington at 47. so the storm is currently 90 miles east/southeast of wilmington. landfall predicted by the hurricane center maybe 8:00 a.m. to noonish or so. if it stalls out a little later than that. here's the 2:00 p.m. position. almost over top of wilmington. then it kind of rains itself out and heads down towards the myrtle b

>> we've been here since 1996, we rode out bertha, we lost the house when fran came in 96 and we see the storm front is going south of us, were not going to get the joe frazier right hook it's not going to be as bad as that but it's going to be bad. we would rather be home then take a week and a half. >> martha: how many of you are at your house? >> this house, since 97. >> martha: how many of your family members are going to ride this out with you? >> i've got my youngest daughter, her boyfriend, we have four other neighbors coming ove over. four more coming over with some blues, we've got generators, 20 gallons of gas. we got propane, we've got generators, ac -- will be fine, we'll be hunkering down, will be safe. >> martha: what about the power outages, you say you have five generators and how far inland are you? i'm assuming you don't live right there on the beach where you're standing. >> were a mile and a half away, sea level is 6 feet. still 5:00, i'm here with you right now but i hook up the ac, central air, i've got enough generator power to hook it up. will be comfortable.

it has a list of names of hurricanes that are very familiar to north carolinians like myself like bertha and floyd and fred. they have survived before. they are prepared here in this county, craven company. they have the pimlico sound and all the oceans and creeks and rivers and they are going to experience a significant amount of flooding. again, this is not an ocean here. this is the river. you can see the wind pushing the whitecaps up. we've seen people here. the national guard is out to check on the people, the gazebo is taking on water as well. this is a vacation area for a lot of people in different states. couldn't get their boats out and they will see if they can ride the storm out there. the dock master is keeping an eye there. the problem is not going to be wind. it's going to be the water, and, again, i'm almost 6 feet tall, a little more than 5'10", i'm standing here in the grass. over there, that part there, that's a road. i'm not going to go out there anymore because it's not safe for me to be there, but it was going up to my hips just about an hour ago. and so as we're see

i was there for bertha and i saw that water level and this looks five times as bad.e you had any water rescues in the city of new bern itself? zbl zblab. >> yes, absolutely. we had quite a few and we're going to have some more. we have 16 new personnel that came in to assist and so we are doing water rescues. we went around today, i personally watched the city fire truck, the national guard with two new bern buses knocking on doors, telling people to get in the bus and go to a shelter. >> now -- >> we still -- >> no, how about your business district where the sheridan and the marina is located down there and if you head down middle street, how are those businesses? do they have water in them? >> yes. yes, they to. some of those businesses actually have basements. but, yeah, quite a few of them are flooded. >> sorry to hear that. >> you know, new bern is -- we're survivors and we're going to pump this stuff out, clean it up and be ready to do business. probably won't be tomorrow morning, but, you know, give us a couple of weeks and we will be spit-shined, ready to go.
