so that's the third ingredient for beshear. rural parts of the state that are ancestrally democratic. their folks there, their parents were democrat. they vote republican national levels. they went with beshear tonight. that was an essential ingredient for him. those were the three sort of things that went into that. also, we get to the governor's race tonight. a second governor's race in mississippi. tate reeves, the republican, we're declaring him the apparent winner here. the reason for the hesitation because his margin is strong here. the reason for the hesitation, mississippi has an unusual procedure. you have to win a majority of the popular vote. you also have to win a majority of the state legislative districts. there are 122 of them in mississippi. we think just based on the vote return pattern he's probably got somewhere in the 70s. we think that will happen but we want to see that happen before we officially character iepz him as the winner. certainly look at the vote totals there. tate reeves when it comes to the po

so andy beshear's win was not surprising to a lot of folks here in kentucky given how beshear was engaged with the teachers who really quite honestly hate governor bevin. and delivered beshear immense massive victories, particularly in louisville, lexington, democratic strong holds for the party. but also was interesting that andy beshear was able to flip certain districts. in northern kentucky, the cincinnati suburbs, three counties. boone county, kitten county, campbell county known as the tea party headquarters, andy beshear was able to flip both campbell and kitten county. so that coupled with these massive wins and margins in the central areas of louisville, lexington, the democratic strong holds i think really, you know, matt bevin's personality and leadership style finally caught up with him. >> so what did the president and the focus on impeachment in this last ten days by bevin, did that -- did that make it more competitive? or was it basically he was just throwing anything -- this -- this race was always lost for bevin and he was looking for anything to get over the -- get over

why was beshear able to win? it there are a couple of things to talk about here, a couple of factors went into this. number one was in the democratic areas of kentucky, there are not many democratic areas of kentucky but in the democratic areas that do exist the turnout, the support level for beshear was through the roof. let me show you what i mean. jefferson county, louisville, city of louisville is their biggest county in the state by far. look at this. the margin for victory for beshear over bevin almost 100,000 vote difference here. in some context here, the last time around when bevin got elected in 2015, the democratic margin in this county was just 37,000. so it exploded from 37,000 up to 100,000. you saw a similar dynamic here, fayette county. this is where lexington is, the university of kentucky. again, 36,000 vote-plus difference there. beshear beating bevin by it was only 10,000 for the democrat in the last gubernatorial election. so that help for democrats. there were other factors, though, as well.

it was andy beshear running as a beshear.f course matt bevin, the republican who lost this evening, took over for his father, steve beshear, who was a popular governor in this state. when you look at matt bevin, essentially, hey, it was 24 hours ago that president trump came to this state for a campaign rally in lexington for matt bevin. matt bevin, if you watch the airwaves, the commercials he was running as well as the republican governor's association, it was essentially donald trump front and center. donald trump was narrating the pieces. you saw pictures of bevin and trump together. this morning i even asked matt bevin why nationalize this race to this extent. and he said, look, voters here in this state care about donald trump, and they want somebody that is going to defend donald trump. i said, i mean, you're not running for the senate. you're not running for the house of representatives. you have no vote on impeachment. yet it was very clear he believed his way to shore up support in this state was in order to ultimat

, a southern governor -- >> andy beshear's father. >> andy beshear's father. he had a very good program but also did a medicaid expansion into kentucky. bevin worked to undo that. that was a central issue. in those counties, this is a big question for democrats, in those counties can they get back some voters on kitchen table issues. even in the midterms, democrats did better in rural counties, significantly in many states really focusing on aca expansion and issues like teacher pay, very kitchen table issues. i think there are important lessons to take away. the other thing i could say, again, is, bevin was uniquely unpopular. he was a very polarizing figure who worked to take away health care benefits and go after teachers. not so dissimilar from how a lot of people see donald trump. >> and elise jordan, in your home state of mississippi, if i'm correct that that's your home state, there was a very different result, because the republican won handily and that was more true to what conventional wisdom would dictate. >> the contrast and the similarities betwee

beshear up. bebasically did it in three ayres, major metropolitan areas of louisville and lexington, key here, the cincinnati suburbs, traditionally republican, beshear was able to win there and less of pa trump area phenomenon in coal country where trump has tended to do very, very well, what we see in there in coal country is beshear was able to hold on to democratic ancestral territory. you are talking about kentucky and sort of being, oh, president trump popular, absolutely true, the approval rate, 55%, disapproval 41%, the big, big problem for matt bevin was his own approval rating. donald trump was not able to takele over the top. you mentioned mississippi, we'll nod to it here. not a surprising result, right? indicate reeves, defeating, donald trump popular there, and finally in virginia, take a look here, house of delegate results, state senate results, both bodies flipped, donald trump extremely unpopular in the state of virginia. that was the big reason why. sort of looking forward to 2

this is a campaign that andy beshear -- steve beshear was the father of andy beshear, and to note, was the governor before matt bevin here. when you're looking at these two candidates, you have essentially two different personalities. you had matt bevin, who is much more of a trumpian figure, somebody who is brash, somebody who turned a lot of people off across the state, particularly when he was talking about issues like education. there was protests among teachers here across the state over pension reform, and he went out of his way to say that they were throwing temper tantrums. and you know, when you were hearing and talking to folks, there was a very real possibility you're talking to republicans that were thinking of voting for andy beshear. i wanted you to hear from the candidates yesterday, because matt bevin was relying largely on the support of president trump. of course, the president was here monday night. and if you looked at the television ads, it was pretty much trump, trump impeachment, and trump. and i asked him about that yesterday. you're going to hear from matt bevi

if we look at this map, beshear ran up the scores in louisville and lexington. the two major cities in kentucky. but a key part of his victory was he ran up the score in the cincinnati suburbs. those are traditionally very republican turf. that's consistent with what we've seen in the trump era so far of those traditionally republican laning suburbs flipping over to the democrats. but there is one part of this story that is not consistent with the trump era. that is in coal country. these coal cities, democratic territory. a lot of these went for trump by 40 or 50 points in 2016. but this year they went back to the democrats and that was the key part of beshear's supposed victory in the state of kentucky. look, obviously we know trump's standing in the state, 55 approval rate. but you know what? candidates do, in fact, matter. and we see this right here. bevin's standing. approval 40%. disapproval rating 51%. trump went in, tried to get him over the top. it just turned out it was not enough. how about in mississippi? obviously that was a different race. here wha

look at that, in 85,000 vote plurality for andy beshear.n the last 30 minutes or so. that is the biggest reason. i'm just seeing why it's changed. he now has a 23,000 vote lead. what is left? the suspense is in western kentucky. the question is in the rural areas of western kentucky where bevin will get some big numbers but there aren't always a lot of votes. the question is can he make up 23,000 or so pretty much in western kentucky. i'm just seeing it switch to 22,000. just give you some sense of this. this is close to 100%, about 81% here. just to give you some comparison, bevin is leading here. this is coal country of western kentucky. 51% for bevin. i want to give you the number here. the last time around in this county, he won it with 55%. he's running at 51% right now so those are the kinds of comparisons we're looking for. again, he's playing from behind right now. more votes just came in. beshear built -- that might be louisville coming in 100%. more of louisville just came in, more of jefferson county. again, just on the strength

already you can see beshear has a plurality of 17,000.the night's over. >> that is the story in fayette county. this is where lexington, the university of kentucky, you see again very early, only 5% of the vote is counted here and already you see beshear is up to more than a 1,500 vote over matt bevin. he will add a lot there. with the two large ones, it's 32,000 right now. we expect that's going to shrink. one of the stories, the reasons why this is so close, beside the expense in louisville and lexington, it's the story we have been telling the last couple years, why democrats have been making gains? the suburb, state your name areas. let's me point to one particular part of the state. this is sort metro area. these are large densely populated, almost 10% of the voting population, almost 10% in the state will come from these three counties. these are typically republican counties, suburban republican pocketbook issues, that sort of thing. let me show you what's happening there tonight. you do see red in this one, boone county. the last

any beshear went in and won by 20%.: ranked choice voting here in new york city come also in the town of east hampton on the eastern part of long island. ranked choice voting is part of a package of reforms that we should be looking at around the country that allow you to open up the politics to let people run who maybe don't have as much money, who may come from a variety ofof backgrounds. brokenchoice voting has througugh the state of maine a d has s been a big factor there. now new york city becomes a largest jurisdiction in the country to embrace ranked choice voting. what that means is you h have se realal potential in elections fr candidates who maybe don't have the biggest amount of money but who have a lot of popular appeal to build out a campaign seeking second choice votes. we can run down a list of campaigns in new york city in the past that have narrowly lost, maybe even 70 like tiffany caban, where if you had had ranked choice e voting, there'sa real chance they may have one. this is a big deal. reports cal

we won, andy beshear won the election in louisville by 100,000 votes. actually 99,999. that is an unprecedented margin, because we motivated and turned out every single democratic voter we can. so i think in the democratic primary, we have to have, the winner will be the one who proves themselves to be the best campaigner and best candidate for the democrats. that is priority number one. >> to that point, if the democrats nominate somebody like elizabeth warren or senator bernie sanders proposing medicare for all or for all who want it, can that candidate win in your state? rep. yarmuth: it's unlikely. but interestingly enough, in 2016, bernie sanders did extremely well in kentucky in the democratic primary. he won -- he had almost 50% of the delegates. 48% of the 52% to delegates. so he did well here. but i think in a general election in kentucky where voters have trended republican in national elections, that would probably be a difficult spot. i don't think he would, that this would be bernie sanders's best state. >> that would be the message of senator mitch mcconne

beshear did well out here. eastern kentucky look at the rural counties. that's not that much blue, but it is more blue than four years ago. you had a democratic candidate who went out into what has always been rural. used to be democrat then became republican. now we call it trump country. it's so important to the president. if you look at trump's map in 2016, in the presidential race. you're all red out here. democratic candidate for governor tonight went out and competed in small counties, too. a complete race if you will, for andy beshear, who again goes to bed tonight a little horse after the big speech believing he wakes up the governor-elect. >> talk about the mississippi and the race there. any developments? >> that is one republicans feel good about. the vote count this has been consistently all night long. sometimes races bounce around. this one has been a ten point race. 80% of the vote in now. republican lieutenant governor reeves with a comfortable lead. 54% to 45%. if you look at the map nothing terribly extraordinary about this. in the meani
