besser. thank you for being here. what we're seeing just kind of broadly as we saw from the top of this show, from big business, the federal government and even local school boards, do you see this as a turning point, are requirements and mandates to get vaccinated, what the country needs right now? >> yeah, you know, i don't think we'd be having this conversation if what we saw in may in terms of the trends with continuing downward movement in cases and increasing vaccination and a much rosier picture here in the united states. if that was continuing, we wouldn't be seeing this. but what we're seeing is a response to a very different picture. and that is numbers of cases going up just about everywhere. hospital systems in many places that are being overrun. and because of that, it is really important to react appropriately. and that is putting in place measures that will protect people's health. the foundation is looking to open right after labor day and we're requiring everyone who worked in the building to be vacci

besser, thanks for joining us. these aren't necessarily new strategies coming in today from president biden. so is any of this going to convince the people who simply don't feel the need to get vaccinated, to go out and get a shot? >> hopefully, wolf. hopefully each of these efforts in communities that are currently at very lovw levels o vaccination will pay off. in particular, if people are hearing from people they trust. i'm here in princeton, new jersey, and 75% of people in my town are fully vaccinated. the next town over, trenton, it's at 44%. so it's clear that we need to see much more taking place there. the focus on the national number of 70% doesn't have a lot of meaning. what matters is what the rate is in your community, in each neighborhood. and looking to address the challenges that there currently continue to be in some neighborhoods for getting vaccinated. >> there's a lot of focus, dr. besser, on primary care doctors, pediatricians providing the vaccine. will that, do you believe, be enough to make

besser, you're a pediatrician. your reaction and advice to parents?> well, you know, i think it is really important that local schools, localities have the and the -- ability to react. you look at schools and focus on that part of the conversation, schools in communities that are seeing big outbreaks, vaccine coverage rates are low, are going to want to mandate masks, and the reason for that is that we know that masks work. outdoor activities tend to be safe, but in schools where children are under 12, there isn't opportunity for vaccination. what we're seeing in many states children 12 and over, governors are not promoting vaccination for that age group. what we do this summer in terms of encouraging 12 and older to get vaccinated will have big impact on what we see around the country this fall and this winter. it gives me some hope when i hear republican governors saying it is important to get vaccinated, and we see data from cdc saying the states getting hit hardest are starting to see the highest uptick of vaccination in the past week. >> let's ta
