we learned the hospital where the suspect has been taken, boston's beth israel deaconness.lawrence is standing by. what are you hearing? >> yeah, standing right outside. and there's a pretty incredible police presence around beth israel. it's a fairly large campus. and there are literally officers posted on just about every corner surrounding it. when we first arrived here a while back, we did see an ambulance being led up to beth israel by about ten motorcycle officers. so there was a caravan of cars and motorcycles leading an ambulance into the area around beth israel. now of course we have been told the suspect has been brought to beth israel, to the hospital here, and there is a tremendous police presence here right now. >> as you're talking, we can show that picture we showed earlier of the suspect in the back of an ambulance. again, not a very clear picture. but it is the picture that we have of the suspect -- actually, that's the suspect being apprehended, laying face up on the ground as law enforcement secures the suspect. you see some of his stomach there. there's

>> we are at beth israel hospital and there is a strong police presence. you are just looking at a couple of the police cruisers surrounding this building right now. this is on the west campus. this is the west clinical center at beth israel where police and law enforcement are surrounding the building. the building takes up about a block so the block is entirely covered right now. this is the heart of long wood medical center near brooke line and jimmy fund way. it is across from the dana farber cancer institute. we have seen additional police presence. they are not letting any cars go down the path. they have done so since we got out there an hour ago. obviously we have been hearing so much about the violent activity that has taken place in cambridge and in watertown and with the boston globe reporting one suspect is in police custody and that one suspect has been shot. we don't know if that suspect was brought here. obviously as you can see there is a heightened sense of security around this entire building right now. this is clearly an area that is is

basically it was an ambulance streaming down the street right in front of beth israel. we saw it turn into the hospital. it was basically being led down the street by about ten motorcycles. now we cannot say with certainty that the suspect was inside that ambulance. but we do know that he was taken here to beth israel as his brother was earlier after the shoot-out. when we think about his injuries, we think about what the boston police chief said earlier tonight when he said that the injuries were likely received during that initial gunfight on early friday morning wh . when they found him he was covered in blood. if you think about how his brother was injured, when his brother was brought here, he was in cardiac arrest. he had multiple gunshot wound, probably injuries from a blast or explosion. seems that his younger brother's injuries may not be quite obviously as severe as that. but again, if he was injured in that gunfight, that means he had about it 4 hours of being on -- 24 hours of being on the run with those injuries before being brought to the hospital. >> that

dzhokhar tsarnaev, in surgery in beth israel hospital in boston, after police say a homeowner noticed a trail of blood in his back yard. >> the men who found him at the boat said he was covered with blood. we assume those injuries occurred the evening before. there was an exchange of gunfire at the boat. i don't know if he was struck. >> now these are some of the images taken right after his capture. you can see him here, well, he's out on the pavement there, or the near -- near the area of the boat. he is here in an ambulance, before heading to the hospital. adam house lie, joining us live now with more. adam? >> reporter: yeah, gregg, he was brought here under guard to this hospital, beth israel in boston, where he remains under guard. just about every entrance in and in and out of the hospital and the entire medical compound here at beth israel has a number of police officer in just about every location, across the street, like the children's hospital hospital you will find increased security. we were told he was in surgery, multiple injuries, one to his hand and one to his head. w

there was additional fbi officers and boston police officers and then of course members from the beth israel deaconess police department outside the room. here's what happened as he was stabilized. the suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev was then taken from that red zone trauma area to an x-ray and then a ct scan and then he was wheeled after very quickly to an operating room. a high level hospital employee said the fbi stayed in the area as he was being operated on. from that moment, it was only within a matter of hours, he was taken to what we now know is the sixth floor of the beth israel. that's an area where were told that was shut off, exclusive to this particular patients. no other patients at all in that sixth floor i.c.u. where he was closed off for the remainder of his stay there. the president of the hospital came in there that night after 8:00 to be a part of this. he doesn't come to the hospital unless it is a very important person who is admitted. the recovery of tsarnaev was extremely quick. i am told, quote, he was in much better shape than most people thought. with the serious

cnn's brooke baldwin is joining us now from beth israel deaconess medical center here in boston. brooke, what do we know about the suspect's health? >> reporter: wolf, we now know from the fbi and folks here at beth israel hospital here in boston that 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev has been upgraded from serious condition now to fair condition. what does that mean? if you listen to our chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta he basically explains that means tsarnaev's vital signs have stabilized. things like heart pressure, blood pressure, and heart rate for example. we know he had an operation on saturday so a couple days out his condition has been improving which obviously is good news. that of course is predicated upon whether or not he decides to continue cooperating with investigators but also that his medical condition clearly helps in gleaning information out of him with regard to what happened last monday. but to quote sanjay gupta he is now officially out of the woods, wolf. >> brooke, you also had a chance today to speak to some veterans who are trying to help some of t

he'd been taking to beth israel deaconess hospital.tal officials said he had multiple gunshot wounds, burns and blast wounds. law enforcement officials said he had an improvised explosive device into his chest. suspect number two escaped by driving a stolen suv through the police officers at the end of the block. tamerlan tsarnaev is the one who was killed and dzhokar tsarnaev escaped and was the subject of a citywide manhunt. boston public schools suspended all activities and local universities and colleges including harvard, boston university, boston college and m.i.t. canceled classes. by 5:45 a.m., the massachusetts bay transportation authority sut down all public transit throughout the city. at 8:00 a.m., massachusetts governor duval patrick urged residents to shelter in place. the city with a population of 625,000 people resembling a ghosttown. lockdown continued throughout the entire day. boston police explained the continued danger of the situation. >> if anybody approaches a suspect matching the outstanding party, use extreme

nbc's ron allen outside beth israel for us now.on, first of all, how many of the bombing victims are at the same hospital as the suspect right now? >> 11 at last count and it was inevitable this would happen because all of boston's major hospitals have victims of the bombing. and the suspect had to go somewhere. why they brought him here to beth israel is unclear. the boston medical center has the largest number of patients but that's unclear. it has created perhaps an awkward situation. i cannot believe that the bombing victims and the suspect are anywhere near each other. this is a sprawling, massive facility, sure they are keeping them apart as you would expect. craig? >> what do we know about the condition of the suspect at this hour and what do we know about the condition right now versus the condition when they brought him in last night? >> let me tell you one other thing about the victims and the suspect being together, there is a family that we have been in touch with since this happened, the nordin family. some good news,

beth israel is where he was brought.er was brought and was pronounced officially dead. also the same hospital where a number of those people that were injured from the blast saw monday were brought as well. some of them are still recovering. we are told there are at least two injuries that he has that are due to gunshot wounds. one of those definitely came from that first initial gun battle. they are not sure if both came from, at least that's something they haven't told us about. we do know one is to the head or neck region. the other is to the leg. also some other injuries he suffered as well. we are told at this hour the number one concern, of course, is to ensure that he survives. they believe that is going to be the case. his floor is guarded as well as his room. we do again, expect to hear something from the hospital at some point although they have been deferring to the fbi and, again, the fbi has not yet spoken this morning. although we did see two fbi agents leave here 4:30 this morning. their car had been here
