fox 5's beth parker has the story. reporter: this golden retriever puppy named heidi loved to play, especially in water. >> if there was a puddle in the driveway, she'd go roll in it. reporter: but when you called her name -- >> she came right away of. reporter: that's why lynnette coffman knew something was wrong wednesday on her farm in middletown, maryland. for years lynnette and her husband have been foster parents for rescue dogs including molly who has a spinal injury. >> i can't stand to think of a dog not having a home. reporter: after a short run on the farm the other four dogs returned to the house around 10:30 wednesday morning, but heidi did not. lynnette and two friends searched the area for three hours and had nearly given up when they found 7-month-old heidi dead in a field. the puppy had been shot three times. >> i just kept screaming. i'm surprised they didn't call 911 to take me away. reporter: heidi's brother hank is heartbroken, too. >> he's like a lost soul. he doesn't know what to do. i'm serious.

i'm beth parker.ll tell you why. . >> people in alabama are picking up the pieces after a devastating tornado struck through a community there. the storm destroyed dozens of homes and buildings. and here the latest on cleanup. >> reporter: the town of clay, alabama, outside of birmingham was hard hit by the tornados. dozens of structure, damaged or destroyed, trees knocked down and first responders did a good job of removing trees and other debris from the roads so that crews could get in and begin the recovery efforts. everywhere you look, there are blue tarps on the roof. earlier today, we took a walk up the hill and shot some video that i want to show you now and we saw this one house that was heavily damaged by the tornado. the officer was ripped off, one of the walls was missing and it looks like a doll house. you see the crib inside and there is an 18-month-old girl sleeping there, and her parents were sleeping upstairs when the sirens went off. the father describes what happened next. >> and we
